Anyone want to help me decipher the name of my house? [pic included]

Hello all,

I’ve lived in my house over a year and only a few days ago I noticed that the concrete pillar outside our house has worn letters on it.

I’m very curious as to what they say, but try as I might, I can’t make out the word.

Any suggestions?

Chilston are a company that make architectural stonework and garden ornaments, and did used to use their company name on stone products.

SirVixofVixHall · 12/01/2020 14:39

There is an E on the end though. So can’t be Chilston.

Veronicat · 12/01/2020 14:40

It's the name of the stone masons who built the wall. We had similar in our old house so Chilstone would tie in.

SirVixofVixHall · 12/01/2020 14:40

Chilstone v likely though.

TheMostHappy · 12/01/2020 14:40

Chitstone

runoutofnamechanges · 12/01/2020 14:43

I don't think it is CHILSTONE, the kerning (space between letters) doesn't look right for IL. There would be a much smaller space between the H and I than the I and L. It should be more evenly spaced. I think CHELSTONE is more likely. Or possibly CHITSTONE.

The first letter looks C. The only other alternatives from could be G, O or Q.
The second letter is H (it's quite distinct in the second photo).
The third and fourth letters are the hardest to make out but there are 2 distinct stems (vertical lines). Based on the space between the 2 stems and the preceding and following letters, I think EL or IT (but not IL) are most likely.
The fifth to eighth letters are clearly STON
The last letter could be an E or I but I think I can make out some bars so it is probably an E.

Do a paper rubbing OP!!

Concestor · 12/01/2020 14:49

I think Callstone.

As you can see the muddle bits if the S and N I think if there were an M you'd see some of the middle v of it. So I think they are Ls

Not entirely sure about the A though but definitely C LLSTONE

runoutofnamechanges · 12/01/2020 14:50

If you look at the clearly visible stems for the third/fourth letters and the space between them, if it were Chitstone, the I wouldn't be midway between the H and T. So instead of looking like:

CHITSTONE

Your sign would look more like with that spacing:

CHI TSTONE

NarwhalsNarwhals · 12/01/2020 14:50

@We1shBird might be on to something there. There's quite a lot of old Chilstone pots round my way (they're a local company) and they did often say chilstone on the base, does it look like there might have been a pot or ornament on there?

as for I was always baffled as to why on earth you’d fill a basement in and reduce your floor space! that's to hide the bodies of course...

Concestor · 12/01/2020 14:52

Posted before I saw the second pic. Definitely Chilstone

SausageSimon · 12/01/2020 14:54

PAPER RUBBING Grin

runoutofnamechanges · 12/01/2020 14:58

Sorry, I meant CHILSTONE not CHITSTONE!

The letter spacing works for CHITSTONE or CHELSTONE but not CHILSTONE.

Strandliv · 12/01/2020 15:00

Don’t know if anyone has said this.... but a rubbing might help. Works really well when trying to figure out what old gravestones say?

AnneKipanki · 12/01/2020 15:06

Miston
I was wondering if the start and finish "letters" might be decorative .

AnneKipanki · 12/01/2020 15:07

Ignore that , the wet stone definitely shows an H and and E .

AmyFl · 12/01/2020 15:11

Can you put your postcode into this, OP, and then look up the address it might have the house name as part of your address?

Would love to see a pic of the cat’s arse

As luck would have it, I do need to put the Christmas decorations back in the loft at some point...

SoupDragon · 12/01/2020 15:19

That second letter is definitely an H. I'm going with CHITSTONE.

SoupDragon · 12/01/2020 15:23

I don't think it is CHILSTONE, the kerning (space between letters) doesn't look right for IL

I agree

diddl · 12/01/2020 15:33

This has reminded me of the names in the Christmas card!

Was that ever resolved?

Looks like Chmstone to me-sorry!

ILearnedItFromABook · 12/01/2020 15:35

It looks like there are remnants of serifs indicating it's a T (more worn than the later T, but still discernible), so I'm leaning toward CHITSTONE.

Perhaps your's was a free sample.

StegosaurusRex · 12/01/2020 15:42

The second picture is so much clearer to me. I'm going with CHITSTONE, too
