Anyone want to help me decipher the name of my house? [pic included]

Hello all,

I’ve lived in my house over a year and only a few days ago I noticed that the concrete pillar outside our house has worn letters on it.

I’m very curious as to what they say, but try as I might, I can’t make out the word.

Any suggestions?

I think it looks like there’s an I at the end

LER83 · 12/01/2020 14:00

I would try and clean it with a jet washer or steel brush or something to see if it makes it clearer.

Based on second photo - changing my suggestion to Chatstone

Do you live in Minto St Edinburgh, OP?

Chipstone?

Will search the deeds (when I’ve worked out where they’ve been stowed). Old Maps wasn’t much help - the bit I want to look at is blocked out! It’s really interesting to see how where we are was all farmland and woodland in the 20s. It also explains why some of the local street names have Wood in their name (which I suppose is obvious, but it’s still fascinating!).

Husband has gone out and is pretty sure it says Chilstone! I might nip next door and steal a look at my neighbour’s pillar, which is similarly worn -curious now!

It’s definitely a 30s house. Some of the houses here have maintained their original door lintels that had engraved and painted lettering - these have fairly ‘posh’ names (30s middle-class aspirations!), so Chilstone wouldn’t be out of place. Ours probably wouldn’t have had a name as it’s an arch above the doorway, whereas the houses with names on the front tend to have straight lintels.

I really love old houses. Our previous house was an early 1900s terrace. It had a converted basement under the front room, but when we had builders round to sort out damp under the floorboards in the back downstairs room, they discovered a basement underneath that had simply been filled with earth! We never had the money to excavate and convert it. I was always baffled as to why on earth you’d fill a basement in and reduce your floor space!

Chitstone.

Bluntness100 · 12/01/2020 14:14

Actually it could be chilstone, think your husband is likely right.

PineappleDanish · 12/01/2020 14:16

Chryston?

Place in Scotland.

titchy · 12/01/2020 14:16

Yep 2nd letter definitely an H.

Chelstone I reckon.

MarchBorn · 12/01/2020 14:17

Coniston!

Is there a Lakeland connection?

Bobkitten · 12/01/2020 14:17

To be honest, my husband didn’t work it out himself; it was the posters here. He tutted at me bothering to ask mumsnet, but has grudgingly conceded you are right and it was worth it Grin

CHAZTONI
As named by Cheryl and Anthony in the 1980s? Or Charles and Antonia?

We1shBird · 12/01/2020 14:21

There’s a company called Chilstone who are architectural engravers/stonemasons. They do garden ornaments etc.

OneTooManyBathtimes · 12/01/2020 14:23

Camstone

MitziK · 12/01/2020 14:24

I think Chimstone. Might have been the name of the family who built it?

Christian?

SorryDidISayThatOutLoud · 12/01/2020 14:33

I asked my stonemason friend. It's CHILSTON.

MollyWindley · 12/01/2020 14:35

Chilstone or Chipstone

SirVixofVixHall · 12/01/2020 14:36

I think Camstone, but Chilstone a distinct possiblity. If you have the deeds, does it not say ? You could look up the original owners on the 1939 census.
Are you certain it is 1930s, as that is very Arts and Crafts lettering.

goodwinter · 12/01/2020 14:37

Chilstone

goodwinter · 12/01/2020 14:38

The 2nd and 3rd "vertical" lines don't come up at the right angle to make an A.
