Anyone want to help me decipher the name of my house? [pic included]

Hello all,

I’ve lived in my house over a year and only a few days ago I noticed that the concrete pillar outside our house has worn letters on it.

I’m very curious as to what they say, but try as I might, I can’t make out the word.

Any suggestions?

Camstone?

SoupDragon · 12/01/2020 13:05

It definitely ends in stone. I would say that there are 3 letters before STONE with the third being an M due to the spacing. So MSTONE

YogaLite · 12/01/2020 13:08

Wimstone?

PostNotInHaste · 12/01/2020 13:08

Agree it’s something ending in stone. Definitely worth a look on the census or 1939 register.

mummmy2017 · 12/01/2020 13:09

Last bit is stone.
But second letter is an m.

zafferana · 12/01/2020 13:09

Camstone

BunloafAndCrumpets · 12/01/2020 13:10

I think it's an m before the Stone too. Camstone? Gemstone?!

SoupDragon · 12/01/2020 13:10

I can only see Camstone having looked at it for ages

zafferana · 12/01/2020 13:11

Or possibly Chitstone

bsc · 12/01/2020 13:12

Looks like Folkstone to me. Definitely'stone' not 'ston' at the end.

I love a good mystery.

I'm going for 'Catistoni'.

IckyIsAFuckingStupidWord · 12/01/2020 13:14

Cawstone?

Baileys4two · 12/01/2020 13:15

Have you tried taking a rubbing from it, as that should help the letters stand out more?

CobbleDePook · 12/01/2020 13:16

I think it's Camstone. What town do you live in?

JaneJeffer · 12/01/2020 13:17

Limestone

Baileys4two · 12/01/2020 13:17

Looks like an 'I' at the end, but an 'E' would make more sense.

MikeUniformMike · 12/01/2020 13:18

Coniston

YummyBelicious · 12/01/2020 13:20

Comstone

Bobkitten · 12/01/2020 13:20

Ooh, some good suggestions! Will take another pic in daylight - hadn’t considered possibility of a worn out E after the N.

The house is 1930s, but I suppose the concrete could be a later addition. Not sure how much they used concrete to top pillars in the 30s (I admit I have no architectural knowledge to base this on whatsoever!)

Bit of a cheeky drip feed - the house is in Wales, so it could be a Welsh word.

If you live in a village with a shop or post office, talk to the staff and see if they know any retired postmen. Elderly locals might remember something too.

Have you asked any of your neighbours?

Did you buy the house? There might be something on the deeds.

Can you take several photos with a light shining from different angles to be able to get all the relief ?

Google your address and put 1900 after it. Or 1850 etc.
