Anyone want to help me decipher the name of my house? [pic included]

Hello all,

I’ve lived in my house over a year and only a few days ago I noticed that the concrete pillar outside our house has worn letters on it.

I’m very curious as to what they say, but try as I might, I can’t make out the word.

Any suggestions?

I vote Chitstone

springydaff · 12/01/2020 15:58

It could be an old post from before the houses were built in the 30s?

springydaff · 12/01/2020 16:03

From an older - bigger? - house that was there before the 30s houses were built?

blitzen · 12/01/2020 16:03

Chitstone

Chitstone

I think a paper rubbing is the answer OP. You can use chalk, or a wax crayon.

Andahelterskelterroundmylittle · 12/01/2020 17:05

Camstone definitely

Mrsmadevans · 12/01/2020 17:08

Have asked my DD1 who has eyes and ears like an Owl Smile and she says it's
CAMSTONE Grin

willloman · 12/01/2020 17:10

Coniston? Anywhere near the lakes?

SoupDragon · 12/01/2020 17:14

It's definitely not Camstone - from the second picture the second letter is definitely an H

WatcherintheRye · 12/01/2020 17:25

I was sure it was CHILSTONE, until I read runoutofnamechanges' post - spacing isn't right, so I can see a case for CHEL or CHET. I can also see it could be CAMSTONE, but would an 'A' have a rounded top, given the style of the other letters?

SoupDragon · 12/01/2020 17:25

Turns out my 1930's plaster was called Speedy Mitchell, not Williams. He also clearly had a more literate friend who wrote the date and signed his own name (it was cold, I didn't linger to try and read it).

The cat's arse is not going to win any art awards.

Thank you for sharing this with us Grin

Definitely Christine!

Feelingabitashamed · 12/01/2020 18:22

Not RTFT but might the land registry have any info? My money, for what it's worth, is on Chilstone. I did initially think Camstone but the second letter looks a bit too straight on the verticals to be an 'A'.

Happygirl79 · 12/01/2020 18:24

Campion?

CAMSTONE or CHILSTONE are my bets.

I live in a house of a similar age, and when we moved in, we had older neighbours knock to tell us the history of the place or just to be nosy. Do you have anyone like that around?

rslsys · 12/01/2020 21:23

OP - Your house was originally occupied by a Pharmacist. His wife was a martyr to 'downstairs' issues.
He formulated a cream to solve her problems, it was successful and it's fame spread by word of mouth.

It became know by the name of their house - Canesten Cream . .

blueruin · 12/01/2020 21:35

Now it looks like Chitstone.

blueruin · 12/01/2020 21:42

OK, now I'm with @We1shBird and everyone else who said Chilstone.

Chilstone or Chitstone

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 12/01/2020 21:50

I’m very surprised no-one has suggested doing a rubbing yet. Wink Grin
