Just read this on their instagram page.
They plan on becoming private citizens

OP posts:
VivaLeBeaver · 08/01/2020 19:00

Are they keeping the £2million a year?

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 08/01/2020 19:00

It's on literally every news website

NeverTwerkNaked · 08/01/2020 19:00

I am pleased for them, they have been treated horribly by the press.

This line says it all in a nutshell .......

It is with your encouragement, particularly over the last few years, that we feel prepared to make this adjustment.

KenzoBaby · 08/01/2020 19:00

Thanks Canada, we owe you one!
Poor Harry will be stuck there after the divorce though as the kid(s) will live there.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 08/01/2020 19:00

I don’t blame them. The press has been vile.

Fraggot · 08/01/2020 19:01

Next comes the Oprah show, documentaries on their life, Instagram ad payouts and more.

We’ll see even more of them now that they have the freedom to engage in the celeb lifestyle without the restrictions.

bitheby · 08/01/2020 19:02

Harry and Meghan to step back as senior royals www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-51040751

They won't be able to fund their own security surely. Wonder if she'll go back to acting.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 08/01/2020 19:02

Thinking about it though, give it 10 -15 years

It's Will and Kate on their own. With a bit of a hand from the Wessexes.

whitershadeofpale · 08/01/2020 19:02

Is just said this on another thread but:

There’s lots of room for questions and criticism in that statement. ‘Working towards my being financially independent doesn’t really mean anything in terms of what the tax payer will fund, just that they’re likely to start engaging in commercial enterprises. Plus it’s debatable if they’re ‘senior royals anyway.

I feel very sorry for them in lots of ways and they have had a rough time at times, but this halfway house between being royals and being private citizens is likely to draw more criticism and scrutiny in the future I think.

PhoenixBuchanan · 08/01/2020 19:02

The tabloids have got what they wanted... or will they double down and be even nastier now?

Good for them. I think they'll be much happier. I suspect they are moving to Canada. The Christmas trip, the trip to Canada House, the reference to North America- it all makes sense. Meghan did live there for 7 years, and it's still in the Commonwealth so the optics are good for two members of the RF to live there.

"Working towards becoming financially independent" did make me laugh though!

ChicCroissant · 08/01/2020 19:02

I think it's the right thing to do, but I also think it will be really hard to be financially independent without being accused of trading on their royal connections. It's been tried before (Sophie and Edward) without success and with similar press criticism (fake Sheik, for instance).

But I do think it's the right thing to do.

Lulualla · 08/01/2020 19:02

It's really not their fault that they need security. Even if they renounced their titles and moved to semi-detached in the suburbs, they will never be "normal" and will always be a target. The public, and press, wont ever leave them alone. Paying for their security is sort of fair enough with them being hounded by press for the public consumption.

Sparklingbrook · 08/01/2020 19:03

Good for them. How many threads will we have to endure though? Hmm

morrisseysquif · 08/01/2020 19:04

That's handy, now we've paid for their total house restoration, never mind the bloody wedding.

They'll be living off the name for the rest of their privileged lives.

Parasites.

AraGrand · 08/01/2020 19:05

So, Meghan couldn't hack it, Harry loves her, therefore, he reneges on the fact that he's a royal.......... Oh dear. This won't end well. I know men whose wives made them give stuff up and inevitably it ended in divorce.
Bless him.

VivaLeBeaver · 08/01/2020 19:05

I don’t begrudge the security being paid for. It’s not their fault they need it.

But if they’re stepping down they need to be financially independent immediatly, not “working towards it”. Both of them have enough money to do this without taking any money from the taxpayer again. He inherited loads from his mother, she is wealthy enough to never have to work again. Though I guess she can go back to acting now if she wants to.

mateysmum · 08/01/2020 19:05

I reckon this is about keeping Meghan sane and the couple happy and I wish them well, but I do think it's a bit of a poor show. I don't think Meghan realised what she was getting in to. Like it or not Harry has a position and responsibilities.
However going forward, Harry will get further from the throne and Charles intends torun a slimmed down monarchy.
I think it also explains the alleged split with Wills. Bet William disapproved of Harry opting out, saw it as letting the side down.

CathyorClaire · 08/01/2020 19:06

Absolutely fine with me so long as they are no longer on the taxpayer's dollar in any way shape or form.

Just a shame they didn't decide before the £2.4M home refurb Hmm

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 08/01/2020 19:06

This might sound a bit nasty but I do wonder whether this is also the beginning of the end of their marriage.

"Anything to make you happy"

To slowly realise nothing will.

Bluntness100 · 08/01/2020 19:06

As posted in the other thread the financial dependence will only be for security which can run to millions, it will likely come from the queen or Charles privately. Not thr tax payer, the queen is very very careful about how tax payer money is spent.

Past that they are both multi millionaires.

The whole thing is quite sad that it's come to this.

tattyheadsmum · 08/01/2020 19:06

Good for them. She's been treated appallingly by the UK gutter press. I'm sure they'll both be much happier, as they deserve.

LochJessMonster · 08/01/2020 19:06

Think they realised the documentary didn’t go the way they planned...

‘Working towards being financially independent’ what a joke, won’t he need a green card Wink

She can hardly go back to acting, princesses can’t do sex scenes can they Hmm

SanAntonio · 08/01/2020 19:07

It is an outdated concept.

Where else would it be acceptable for a baby such as George to be born into a predetermined job? Yes technically he could walk away but he is being indoctrinated from birth.

We banned slavery in 1807 but still believe that it is acceptable that a child is bonded for life as a future monarch.
