Just read this on their instagram page.
They plan on becoming private citizens

She thought everyone would love her and she could ‘modernise the royals‘, and now is running away because she’s not favourite.

THIS!

MrsWhites · 08/01/2020 19:22

I feel like this is a bit of a ‘having your cake and eating it’ situation though. They want to step back from public duty (fair enough) but only after tax payers have funded their U.K. home and will no doubt still pay for their security, travel etc. But they are ‘working towards being financially independent’ 😂 I wish I had to work at being as financially independent as they are!

Aragog · 08/01/2020 19:22

Many of the comments on threads such as this and the others are the exact reason why the couple have had to do this. They've pretty much been hounded and bullied out of their roles by the British media and those who have had it in for Meghan since day 1.

Hang on, so we still get to finance them as part of the Royal family but they will be working towards financial independence, meaning making money out of their status?

No that's not what that means at all. It could mean that, but it could also mean financial independence from the queen or Charles privately. Not the tax payer, and I don't think they will be making money out their status, they don't need to and the whole point is they want privacy.

BrieAndChilli · 08/01/2020 19:22

I read this which although is speculation I think probably goes a long way to explain this sudden decision

CantSayJack · 08/01/2020 19:23

Some of the utterly bitchy comments on here are unreal so can you blame them?

People can bitch as much as they like now, do you think Harry and Megan care? They will have a lovely life and can finally be free to be themselves and bring up Archie how they want rather than being fake.

colouringinpro · 08/01/2020 19:23

I hope this makes them both happy.

cloud1183 · 08/01/2020 19:23

If they have to buy their own mansion, pay for their own private jets, designer clothes, cars, private schooling etc then her money ( I’m not convinced she has £6million) and his inheritance won’t last long. They will have to resort to turning into celebrities. I get that Meghan has been treated harshly but it’s six of one and half a dozen of the other and I really don’t think she and Harry have helped themselves

strictlymomdancing · 08/01/2020 19:23

Meghan is not well liked amongst my American family or friends.

The criticism is about their hypocrisy, their whining, their wanting it all for little effort attitude.

Nothing to do with racism. Not everything is racism. I couldn't give a shit about her ethnicity or the fact she's American. I don't think she's a nice person full stop.

I don't like Harry either but more because he's been completely sucked in. This is all too much too fast.

Cam77 · 08/01/2020 19:24

@LochJessMonster
No. She’s only stepping away from curtsying for the Queen and making crappy small talk with Kate Duchess of Boredom. Meanwhile she keeps raking in the cash thanks to, oh I don’t know, her hubby being son of the future King of England and has become a massive globally known celebrity. If this was the plan all along it worked a treat.

DickDewy · 08/01/2020 19:24

I think this is fantastic.

Good luck to them. Hopefully they can live normal, happy lives out of that archaic set-up.

I’d like to see all of them go really, but would be happy to see at least a few more for the cull. Beatrice & her sister and Edward and his wife.

Thisenglishlife · 08/01/2020 19:25

Lazy couple. Just leaving others to it. What a mega shambles. Take take take and little give!

That's completely false!
Arguably Meghan did more in her first year than Kate did in her first few years and all while she was pregnant too.
She didn't just go and smile and shake hands, she was very proactive. She engaged, found out problems and helped solved them.
For example: she found out that the kitchen was only open two days a week, she helped them be open everyday. Now the women get experience and have employment, a successful cookbook and can help others.
Harry set up The Invictus Games, Sentebele and others and helped co-found Heads Together.
They are both are really great at getting things done. They have both been really hounded and it has really shaken up Harry, who is a very caring, sensitive and protective man.

Bluntness100 · 08/01/2020 19:25

That bitchy link is a prime example of why this has happened. As said they are both multi millionaires in their own right. Clearly they want the world to fuck off ans leave them alone. That's what they are trying to do.

KatyCarrCan · 08/01/2020 19:25

I don't think they'll disappear. It clearly say they're going to start their own charity entity. I imagine they think they'll be similar to Bill and Melinda Gates or to the Clinton Foundation.

They'll still be high profile and become regulars on the philanthropy speaking circuits. But, crucially, they'll feel they're no longer answerable to the public for their decisions or their spending.

It's an interesting solution to their struggles. I'm not sure it's the most obvious one or the best one but I hope it works for them and that it makes them happier. They've definitely struggled to find their place.

NotACleverName · 08/01/2020 19:26

So, Meghan couldn't hack it, Harry loves her, therefore, he reneges on the fact that he's a royal.......... Oh dear. This won't end well. I know men whose wives made them give stuff up and inevitably it ended in divorce.
Bless him.

Why do some people continue to infantilise a 35 year old man, as though he's some easily led little lamb completely lacking a mind of his own? It's pathetic how some of you are determined to make Meghan the bad guy no matter what.

I can't say I blame either of them for this decision. Being criticised for every minute little thing by nasty guttersnipes can't be fun.

CatherineOfAragonsPrayerBook · 08/01/2020 19:26

They appear not to want to operate within the constraints of the RF and that's fair enough.

It's funny everyone who has been saying that they have been acting more like celebrities than RF members has been constantly shouted down.

Well now they really will be. And available for hire, while enjoying benefits of tax payer funded securityHmm

ConstanceL · 08/01/2020 19:26

Hopefully the York girls will take a leaf out of their book and stop trying to be seen as 'senior' royals. Although I think their father has scuppered any plans they had for bigger roles.

Bettercallsaul1 · 08/01/2020 19:26

What rubbish - they’re running away because of relentless, incessant bullying from the tabloid press. Why should anyone have to put up with that? They’re quite right to go.

SamanthaBrique · 08/01/2020 19:27

She thought everyone would love her and she could ‘modernise the royals‘, and now is running away because she’s not favourite.

Or maybe she started with good intentions and lots of ideas (and the ones she spearheaded have actually been very successful) but the media campaign against her has been disgusting and nothing short of bullying. And she can't do much as sneeze without a Mumsnet thread popping up to discuss why she didn't do it the right way.

Isn't there a member of a well-known band who recently made a documentary about how online bullies nearly drove her to suicide? Unfortunately being rich and beautiful doesn't mean things like this can't affect your mental health.

Bluntness100 · 08/01/2020 19:28

Harry privately is worth 30 million. Meghan four (six is dollars) between them they are worth 34 million privately. Their wealth will last just fine.

Syncplug · 08/01/2020 19:28

I don't think the argument that they want to be out of the limelight particularly holds up, she has been quite vocal about her aspirations in the past, many of which rely on her 'fame' and renaming in the spotlight- and fair enough, why not if that's what she wants to do. Not wanting to live the life of a royal is understandable though.

bohemia14 · 08/01/2020 19:29

Any 'financial independence' will be as a result of Harry's connections and title. There will be people who fawn over them.

I hope that they will refund the cost of their Frogmore refurbishment, renounce their titles and pay for their own security.

I believe this is the beginning of the end of the royal family. Harry and Meghan will now believe that they are entitled to have a voice for their (certainly in Harry's case) dubious talents and opinions. They will only be given the time of day because of their connections.

Such a shame they couldn't have stuck it out a bit longer. I feel disappointed in them.

Cam77 · 08/01/2020 19:29

Working toward financial independence
when your granny owns about 5% of the country and your dad (soon to be king) has slipped you a couple of mill every year since you were 18 and every TV network around the world would pay you a million quid for an hour interview below of who your gran is. How will the poor darlings survive?? Lol.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 08/01/2020 19:29

Kate and William may be relieved to have the support of Beatrice and Eugenie when the Old Guard are gone.

Bluntness100 · 08/01/2020 19:29

Some of these comments, people jumping to erroneous conclusions and attacking, no wonder they are fucking off out of it.
