What food do you really want to like but just don’t?

Friend bought me some vegan mince pies (I have a dairy/egg allergy) because I was moaning about the lack of Xmas sweets available for vegans or people with allergies. Very sweet of her to think of me, except I just can’t stand the taste of them. Every year I see them, think they look so good and try one and every year they are just as rank as the last Xmas Sad
Another example for me is grapefruit, my DH makes this citrus fruit salad with oranges, grapefruits, lemons and limes he has it with Greek yogurt and honey, he even adapts it to the seasons and adds toasted nuts and cinnamon in winter. Ohhh god it looks unbelievable and the grapefuit colour just makes the dish but I actually cannot stand the taste of it...
So what food do you really wish you liked but just don’t??

Coffee! I love the smell but hate the taste. Would so love to have a nice cup in the morning.

Savingforarainyday · 08/12/2019 18:53

Goats cheese ugh!

newbingepisodes · 08/12/2019 18:56

Tomatoes - so good for you but urgh tried a million times and just can't get taste for them. Raw only.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 08/12/2019 18:58

@newbingeepisodes I agree, they are like squishy horrible tasting testicles

lilgreen · 08/12/2019 18:59

Butter or spread. Have hated it since a child but life would be easier if I could eat it. Can never eat a prepackaged sandwich for example and always have to ask in restaurants if I’m ordering anything that involves bread.

Honeyroar · 08/12/2019 19:00

Wine. Can’t stand the stuff, apart from champagne. Don’t like gin either.

Olives. Not even in oil form. Despite having lived in Tuscany and Provence!

Tempjob · 08/12/2019 19:12

Fresh tomatoes - have always hated them...

Baked beans - I cannot even touch the sauce lol

Restingbitchface01 · 08/12/2019 19:23

Anything smoked or salty - caramel, chorizzo etc. There's chorizzo in so many fab recipes......would love to enjoy it! Salted caramel is the work of the devil.

Tempjob · 08/12/2019 19:44

Most types of condiment eg ketchup, mayonnaise, mustard, brown sauce etc. Just looks disgusting and I hate how it touches the other foods on the plate

Mushy peas

Tea (I like herbal)

Given I was a very fussy child, not doing too bad - I love most of the foods listed here such as bananas, fish/shellfish, avocado, porridge etc

CigarsofthePharoahs · 08/12/2019 19:47

Joining in with the banana hate.
I know exactly why.
School pack lunches. Mum always put half a banana in so by lunchtime everything smelled of warm banana. Yuck.

DuggeesWoggle · 08/12/2019 19:57

Sweet potato
Avocado
Olives
Wine
Oranges/satsumas
Beetroot
Toffee
Herbal tea
Steak
Mouldy cheese

Apart from the beetroot, ifart, the rest of your list contains most of my favourite foods! Beetroot however is grim. I would love to like it as it's so very good for you but it just tastes like soil Sad

RunningNinja79 · 08/12/2019 21:06

Veg - I dont mind peas and carrots, but thats it. Tried Broccoli and Cauliflower in various forms and also tried to force feed them until I liked them, but no. Also dont like sprouts, parsnips, beans in any forms and pretty much every other veg. (Yes I dont really like Christmas dinner all that much)

Fish - Unless it comes in batter I just can't eat it.

Tea - Green tea especially. Again I have tried various teas (normal, green, fruit, mint) and have also tired the keep drinking it until I liked it, but no.

Coffee - Love the smell, can't stomach the taste

Nuts - Would much rather snack on nuts than chocolate.

Gin - much healthier than Lager

If I liked the above I could be soo much thinner.

Destinysdaughter · 08/12/2019 21:08

Olives. I've tried to like them but they're just so bitter to me and they infect any dish they are in, like salads, pizza or pasta. Yuk yuk yuk!

TheReef · 08/12/2019 21:16

Salmon and poached eggs - I 'quite' like them, but sometimes they really do make me want to gis.

IHaveBrilloHair · 08/12/2019 21:25

Wine, it's just so horrible.
I'd love to be one of those people who can look at a wine list and discuss it and such, but nope.

I don't like coffee either, and a few other things but I don't need or want to like them, the wine kinda bothers me though since I love eating out at nice restaurants.

Leflic · 08/12/2019 21:47

I wish I liked Chrustmas cake. So much time and effort goes into it and the wishes and the expense. I love that my mum makes it but a shame I’m not keen.

Wish I liked tea. Any tea from builders to fruit tea. All disgusting because they don’t taste like coffee.

ithinkmycatistryingtokillme · 08/12/2019 22:13

Eggs, just can't stomach them, the texture/taste/smell makes me heave

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 08/12/2019 22:43

Stilton. One of the glories of English food, but it makes me retch.

Linzbe · 08/12/2019 22:54

Eggs.
Red wine.
Fish - all varieties.
Milk.

Can't stand any of them! 🤮

CupASoup · 08/12/2019 22:56

Milk. Cannot stand the sight, taste or smell of it.

LionelRitchieStoleMyNotebook · 08/12/2019 23:06

Bananas and baked beans, both textural nightmares squishy, slimy, pasty 🤢

LionelRitchieStoleMyNotebook · 08/12/2019 23:08

Also anything Christmas flavoured; mince pies, Christmas pudding, mulled wine (stop bloody mulling it, it was perfectly fine before!) . Other than that I think I literally eat anything including offal which is a no for lots of people, oh not tripe though that is truly rancid.

soupforbrains · 08/12/2019 23:10

tomatoes.

They're in EVERYTHING. And you can't just pick them out of things, because they slime all over it and make it all taste of tomato anyway. So many shop bought salads and sandwiches and dishes of all sorts have tomato in them. I really really wish I liked them, becuase it's an absolute pain in the arse not being able to stand them.

Also Bananas but that's a texture thing. I'm weird about textures so also don't like custard, blancmange, jelly, mousse, angel delight, pannacotta, creme brulee or basically anything which is in between liquid and solid... They might taste amazng and have a flavour i love but the texture just triggers my gag reflex.

Topazance · 08/12/2019 23:15

Another olive hater here. I was reliably informed I just had to eat some good quality ones. Er no I'm still hating them. And don't even get me started on anything that smells fishy! I wish I liked it as I know it's good for you but can only eat fish fingers or cod!

Celticrose · 08/12/2019 23:16

Olives. A place where I sometimes frequent serves a lovely salad which contains olives. I have managed to eat some (they are the black ones) but haven't managed to fully embrace them yet. Some day I will. I hope.
Semolina pudding. Absolutely vile. We got this for school dinners with jam. At least it doesn't appear on any menus that I have seen. Though I have a lovely recipe using semolina to make date squares which I might resurrect.
