What food do you really want to like but just don’t?

Friend bought me some vegan mince pies (I have a dairy/egg allergy) because I was moaning about the lack of Xmas sweets available for vegans or people with allergies. Very sweet of her to think of me, except I just can’t stand the taste of them. Every year I see them, think they look so good and try one and every year they are just as rank as the last Xmas Sad
Another example for me is grapefruit, my DH makes this citrus fruit salad with oranges, grapefruits, lemons and limes he has it with Greek yogurt and honey, he even adapts it to the seasons and adds toasted nuts and cinnamon in winter. Ohhh god it looks unbelievable and the grapefuit colour just makes the dish but I actually cannot stand the taste of it...
So what food do you really wish you liked but just don’t??

I don't like most meat. I tolerate mince in a spaghetti Bolognese, and eat chicken, but anything else is just unpleasant. I mean, I'll eat it if someone has cooked it for a group meal, but I would never choose it and would rather just have the vegetables.

I also don't like shell fish, olives, cabbage, Brussel sprouts.

And mayonnaise. That makes it unbelievably difficult to find a pre prepared sandwich anywhere. Every sandwich seems to have mayo in, and even a lot of salads have mayo on too, so I'm a bit stuffed if I need to grab lunch on the go luckily cheese pasties are often available, even if they are less healthy

King size/jumbo prawns. I love small ones, but the big ones are too 'crunchy'. It always reminds me they still have their innards. (Or am I wrong about that?)

BlouseAndSkirt · 08/12/2019 11:23

Suellerker Don’t worry, they don’t have innards. In a prawn the innards run along the spine on the outside and have been removed.

If you get one with it’s she’ll still on, remove the black vein from along the back. That is the ‘innards’.

BiteyShark · 08/12/2019 11:25

I wish I liked bananas.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 08/12/2019 11:27

Tomatoes. I always feel so childish picking them out of salads or burgers but I can't abide them.

MyNewBearTotoro · 08/12/2019 11:27

Beer. I just can’t like the taste. Also red wine.

For food it would be strong cheese; blue cheese, goats cheese, strong Brie etc. I’m really fussy with cheese but I wish I wasn’t.

The smooth skinned avocados. Love the crinkly skinned ones, can eat those avocados until they are coming out of my ears but something about the other type just isn't right and makes me gag.

Risotto - only once had it perfectly cooked. Usually it's overcooked and slimy, sometimes undercooked with little hard bits, nearly always oversalted, just best avoided, especially in restaurants.

And risotto is not ever a main course. Even for vegetarians.

TammyKat · 08/12/2019 13:44

Mince pies and mushroom. Can’t stand either

Crinkle77 · 08/12/2019 14:07

Shellfish. It's the texture that puts me off the most. I try little bits if someone is eating it in the hope that this time I will like it but I never do.

Justme10 · 08/12/2019 14:16

Almonds and coffee, love the smell of both, can't stand the taste 🤢

Fifilafrog · 08/12/2019 14:24

Coffee. Smells amazing but tastes awful.
Alcohol of any kind. Ruins many otherwise lovely drinks by making it taste as though it's been spiked with paint stripper.
Game meat. Tastes of death.
Spicy food. Again, ruins many lovely meals by just making it painful!
Shell fish. Just can't get past the fact that they filter 💩 for their dinner 🤢
Celeriac and celery. Just why??
Salmon. Slimy when smoked, sticky when cooked.

ysmaem · 08/12/2019 14:28

Red wine.
Larger.
Mustard.

I cant stand those 3 but would live to say that I did.

Zaphodsotherhead · 08/12/2019 14:34

Bread, pasta, potatoes, rice - pretty much any carby type food. They are just so bland and boring and mouthfuls of bluh. Can force down a couple of mouthfuls but after that, just nope.

Cinnamon. I feel discombobulated at this time of year when they put it in EVERYTHING, but every food manufacturer seems to find it necessary to add to anything that has apple in it, almost as though applecinammon is a thing. Tastes like soap to me.

InglouriousBasterd · 08/12/2019 14:40

Aubergine. I’ve tried so many times in so many ways but it’s revolting, I have made my peace with this.

yellowallpaper · 08/12/2019 14:42

Avocado

SummerPavillion · 08/12/2019 14:46

Raw mushrooms, but they're fine cooked.

Peppers, I wish I liked them as they're healthy but they taste too strong and chemically to me.

Bananas at room temperature. I like them fried, in banana bread, or frozen eg in home made ice cream, but not as they are which is a pity.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 08/12/2019 14:53

Porridge

I love oats and oaty things and I love milk (only cold) but together they make something so revolting regardless of what else goes into it that even looking at it can make me heave

Ds loves it some mornings I just can’t make it for him so he has ready brek that doesn’t look or smell quite so bad

Oats left in yogurt overnight is ok (with honey)

janj2301 · 08/12/2019 17:29

I love coffee but can't bear anything coffee flavoured

EmpressLesbianInChair · 08/12/2019 17:36

Rocket. It seems to be on / in bloody everything, especially the veggie options, and I hate it.

It’s especially annoying when it’s not listed in the ingredients. I asked for a veggie burger on a stall somewhere once, no mention of rocket in the ingredients list but as I watched them make it they added a big handful of the stuff. They were Hmm when I asked them to take it straight out again but as I pointed out, nobody asked if I wanted it.

motorcyclenumptiness · 08/12/2019 17:37

Salted caramel. Ew. So giddy was I at the sight of Boojabooja truffles on offer yesterday, I didn't notice they were salted caramel. O rage! O desespoir!

Silvergreen · 08/12/2019 17:54

Sushi. So pretty. So vile 😂

apples24 · 08/12/2019 18:17

Yoghurt, I love the idea of it, sweet/tangy soothing. But can't stomach it at all.

Many cheeses, for example emmental, gouda, brie, camembret etc. I really love strong cheddar, feta, goats cheese and halloumi, only like blue cheese when cooked. Would love to love all cheeses and always get a cheese board rather than something sweet for pudding!

Quite averse to a lot of dairy products actually when I come to think of it...

Butterisbest · 08/12/2019 18:38

Milk, it's disgusting and revolting.

Natsel84 · 08/12/2019 18:44

Porridge and custard cant stand the texture in my mouth , any type of fish , it looks lovely when cooked but cant stand it
