What food do you really want to like but just don’t?

Friend bought me some vegan mince pies (I have a dairy/egg allergy) because I was moaning about the lack of Xmas sweets available for vegans or people with allergies. Very sweet of her to think of me, except I just can’t stand the taste of them. Every year I see them, think they look so good and try one and every year they are just as rank as the last Xmas Sad
Another example for me is grapefruit, my DH makes this citrus fruit salad with oranges, grapefruits, lemons and limes he has it with Greek yogurt and honey, he even adapts it to the seasons and adds toasted nuts and cinnamon in winter. Ohhh god it looks unbelievable and the grapefuit colour just makes the dish but I actually cannot stand the taste of it...
So what food do you really wish you liked but just don’t??

Loving these food aversions!

@thismeansnothing ahhh yes the penny sweets? I thought it was some new fad I was missing out on, like bubble tea or a master chef style banana foam.

@Chickydoo do you find eating out a nightmare? I am the opposite I love all things cream/milk but one of my twins has a dairy allergy so I can’t eat it and it’s a pita.

@turkeyontheplate love that story, and your description of the food was fab, though that’s my idea of heaven.

Fish. I can't even eat prawn cocktail crisps or wine with finings in.

I blame being forced to eat fish fingers as a child by a devil woman when I was in hospital.

I just can't get past the slimeyness of them when they are alive.

FilthyBiscuit · 05/12/2019 13:37

Mushrooms. They're gross. They look, smell and taste revolting. DP loves them.

StormTreader · 05/12/2019 13:39

Raw bananas - so good for you, the first chew is fine, and then it explodes into the texture of a mouthful of pureed frogs and gets spat straight out.

ApacheTomcat · 05/12/2019 13:49

Yogurt.

It looks lovely and creamy.
It smells great.
It's always recommended as part of a healthy diet.

It tastes as though someone has left it in a warm cupboard for a month and then sneaked it back in the fridge. It's horrible.

TheSecondMrsAshwell · 05/12/2019 13:53

Fish. Of any variety. It smells like a pair of old pissy knickers. I had a diabetic nurse ask under what circumstances I might eat fish. I replied that I would have to be on the point of starvation and completely hammered.

And I always get the stupid question when I say I don't eat fish "what, not even shellfish?" No, it is just as evilly stinky. Blah!!! I can just about tolerate the smell of tinned salmon to give the cat a treat.

I don't eat eggs either, but if I were forced to (say for a medical reason), I could swallow it raw.

percheron67 · 05/12/2019 13:53

Sushi. I have tried on several occasions but it is as much as I can do to swallow it and not put (delicately, of course!) in my napkin.

RadElla · 05/12/2019 13:57

Beer, any type (bitter, stout, lager, whatever). It's just disgustingly bitter and not in any way refreshing. I'd rather die of thirst.

Pork crackling/skin - this is a recent development, as I used to love it. Now it makes me heave.

Instagrump · 05/12/2019 14:29

Fish. It's such a widely loved food, appears on nearly every restaurant menu and looks absolutely mouthwatering, especially from a chippy but I just can't eat it. Every few years I'll take a bite to see if I like it but each time it's a firm YUCK!

My whole dining experience feels like it's lacking.

ImportantWater · 05/12/2019 14:32

Tea. It makes me gag. It's pretty hard being British and hating tea, I can tell you. Also it means I drink too much coffee. So I would like to like it, but I really, really, can't.

MrsFoxPlus4Again · 05/12/2019 14:33

Lasagne, tried it so many times and I hate it. Don’t know why. Think it smells amazing though

Instagrump · 05/12/2019 14:36

I can't understand the attraction to shellfish. Seafood in all forms just makes me think of oversized insects and other nasties that we wouldn't dream of eating on land but are suddenly okay because they live in water? Boak! I wish I could get past that but a lobster to me is no better than a the innards if a giant cockroach in a bushtucker trial.

charm8ed · 05/12/2019 14:39

Yogurt

Instagrump · 05/12/2019 14:43

@MrsFoxPlus4Again do you eat pasta bolgnese though? DD loves a spag Bol but won't touch lasagne despite it being pretty much the same thing but with a small spread of bechamel in the layers. It causes a lot of arguments at dinner at ours cos I love a lasagne.

Historydweeb · 05/12/2019 14:45

Sushi.
Any fish at all 😭

lumpy76 · 05/12/2019 14:46

Vegetarian so obviously don't eat some things anyway but otherwise Olives, wine, pretty much all alcohol really 😲

lumpy76 · 05/12/2019 14:47

Oh yeh...vegetarian sushi....hate it! 😖

MrsFoxPlus4Again · 05/12/2019 14:50

@Instagrump nah I don’t even like that lol. I’d prefer just plain pasta with meatballs & cheese lol

thenightsky · 05/12/2019 14:51

Prawns, especially cold. They taste of absolutely nothing and I cannot understand why people like them. Little cold lumps of just the right level of firmness to feel like tiny bodies. Urgh.

RIBlue · 05/12/2019 15:01

Goats cheese.

I would like to like it but it smells and tastes like a dirty goat pen in my opinion. I do muck out several types of animal so know my dirty bedding smells!

Flippetydip · 05/12/2019 15:01

Mushrooms, and I wish wish wish I could like them because I'm pescatarian and actually mushrooms would be a brilliant meat substitute, but no, they are utterly repulsive.

MilaRos · 05/12/2019 15:04

Gin! I always think the flavoured ones smell lovely, but I just can't stomach the taste. Reminds me of nail varnish remover.

timeforawine · 05/12/2019 15:06

Loads!
Bananas
Porridge (hate the oats getting stuck in my teeth)
Olives
Whiskey
Shellfish
Salmon
Avocado
All types of beans apart from green beans
Water chestnuts (in so many oriental dishes!)
Bamboo shoots (above)
Lamb

Happyspud · 05/12/2019 15:11

Most beans. I can of course it then. But I never enjoy them. It’s a pity.

TheNoodlesIncident · 05/12/2019 15:15

Fish of any species; tuna, salmon, swordfish, cod - they're all fishy and my stomach just rolls and NO. Seafood of any description is out, although there's a lot there I haven't tried but have no intention of trying. Like calamari. Fish are friends not food

Porridge is also URGH. I eat all sorts of granola and oaty things but cannot stomach porridge, or Ready Brek, anything like that. The texture is grim and the taste isn't pleasant. As a kid I was forced to sit at the table until I had eaten the revolting porridge but I won that one. I will sit for hours and not touch a congealing even-less-appealing bowl of cold porridge, thanks.

Curry. DH loves curries and it would sure be a lot easier if I did too. Then I wouldn't have to eat omelettes in Indian restaurants...
