What food do you really want to like but just don’t?

Friend bought me some vegan mince pies (I have a dairy/egg allergy) because I was moaning about the lack of Xmas sweets available for vegans or people with allergies. Very sweet of her to think of me, except I just can’t stand the taste of them. Every year I see them, think they look so good and try one and every year they are just as rank as the last Xmas Sad
Another example for me is grapefruit, my DH makes this citrus fruit salad with oranges, grapefruits, lemons and limes he has it with Greek yogurt and honey, he even adapts it to the seasons and adds toasted nuts and cinnamon in winter. Ohhh god it looks unbelievable and the grapefuit colour just makes the dish but I actually cannot stand the taste of it...
So what food do you really wish you liked but just don’t??

Coconut milk, not cream

Egghead68 · 05/12/2019 23:17

I’m trying to get myself used to porridge but it feels like a penance (and I have to cover it in so much honey and nuts it ends up really fattening).

jigsawmaniac · 05/12/2019 23:37

I hate coffee but I'd love to like it! Colleagues popping out for nice coffees and I'm just making myself a cup of tea. To be fair I love my tea but it doesn't sound as glamorous. I try it again every so often but I just can't drink it!

CountYourRoosters · 05/12/2019 23:41

People go on and on about avocado. Ooh fancy brunch date- avocado on toast? Blah, blah. To me, it is bland and tasteless, and the texture creeps me out.

Thestrangestthing · 05/12/2019 23:42

For all those people who wished they liked coffee, it's not all its cracked up to be. Im comely addicted, basically the onky think I drink during the day, can't get through a day without the caffeine, makes me dehydrated because I don't drink enough water, also harder to lose weight because I like a lot of milk and sugar in, sweeteners don't taste the same. Best not to start.

Thehagonthehill · 05/12/2019 23:42

Yoghurt.I would love to like it.I could have that nice looking granola with yoghurt.Useful for diets .But I keep tasting and really hate it,all flavours.

ClinkyMonkey · 05/12/2019 23:50

Risotto. I've tried. But it's got to the point that no matter how tasty the particular version on offer sounds, I can't bring myself to order yet another disappointing pile of slimy slop. I love pudding rice though.

Waspnest · 05/12/2019 23:55

Soup - I wish I liked it because lunch would be so much easier but I think it always has the texture of liquidised slugs.

Pasta - tasteless stodge.

Herbal teas - the descriptions make it sound lovely, the smell is gorgeous, the taste is shit.

managedmis · 06/12/2019 00:32

Celery. Cheap, veg, full of vitamins.

Tastes like feet.

managedmis · 06/12/2019 00:34

Sweet potatoes. I've tried roasting them and boiling and mashing. Am I doing something wrong?

^^fried? Like chips? Hubba hubba

Egghead68 · 07/12/2019 06:49

Yes - try them as chips! Or roasted with some feta cheese - delicious.

notsodimwit · 07/12/2019 07:11

Nuts! It's the texture in my mouth! Like eating plastic ☹

donttellmetwice · 07/12/2019 07:14

Any type of wine. I can't stand any of it but I'd like to!

Wincarnis · 07/12/2019 07:21

Eggs
Wine
Seafood
Avocado
Nuts

OneKeyAtATime · 07/12/2019 07:40

Coffee and anything coffee flavoured. I make an exception for tiramisu though

Celery

Oysters

Kidney

OneKeyAtATime · 07/12/2019 07:40

Steak either. Feel sick just at the thought of it

BlouseAndSkirt · 07/12/2019 07:42

Most of the (few) things I don’t like I have no need to like. I am fine with not liking them.

But now that half my household have gone veggie or heading towards vegan, I wish I liked Tofu.

Lots of E Asian dishes need an alternative to chicken or prawns for example, and they all like Tofu.

I have marinaded it, fried it in different flavours, but that curiously sickly blandness always stays and the texture... really don’t like it.

Witchend · 07/12/2019 07:47

Bread.
I can just about tolerate white bread, but brown makes me gag.

Honeybee85 · 07/12/2019 07:50

Game meat. It’s a luxury popular winter dish where I come from.

I just absolutely dread the thought of eating deer, rabbits etc.

madcatladyforever · 07/12/2019 07:56

Olives!
Put out as a sophisticated snack everywhere you go, I always try one. I always gag. I'm Italian for God's sake.

HeronLanyon · 07/12/2019 07:56

Beetroot

Wine - does not agree with me at all.

Mushrooms - I do like them but only when I feel like them (not often) and only when I feel like the way they have been cooked - ie i am unbelievably and inexplicably fussy about them and end up eating them only a few times a year. As a vegetarian this has always been a pita.

Itstheprinciple · 07/12/2019 08:04

Frozen oven chips. I've tried all different brands but they all leave a really oily taste and a funny texture.

Bananas - I do like but can't eat as they kick off my IBS and give me horrendous stomach cramps.

I think I like everything else that I want to like.

NabooThatsWho · 07/12/2019 08:07

Any and all seafood. I wish I could eat fish as it is so good for you but I just can’t stomach it.

Boomerwang · 07/12/2019 08:08

I'm with the green olives. I've just about managed to enjoy black olives, but the green ones are foul. I think it's the way they are used in martinis and thrown all over tapas that makes me wish I could be a part of that gang.

argueifnecessary · 07/12/2019 08:16

I have always resented really fussy people but have been surrounded by them all my life. Having read this thread, I understand a bit better why people don't like certain things - you know, mushrooms like slugs etc. Still going to resent people that don't try and publicly shout how DISGUSTING this or that is, while people are eating it. One of the rudest things I could think of.
I do have some foods I'd rather not eat - kidney beans being one of them but I suspect I'm allergic as they are poisonous in their raw form. Beans generally are a bit too bland for me.
