I work on the cobwebs all year round.....

This year I'm doing the Acid bath murderer scene (he lived less than a mile away) complete with bath and skeleton. I like to be scary and educational!
.........
Oh very wholesome stuff for the children I'm sure - not.

Ours were re-used year after year, and I will be taking them to DD when I visit her at university. She loves Halloween.

I feel that it is for chidren and young people, and now that DD has left home we don't need to do anything for Halloween any more.

Although, to be fair, decorating the house for Halloween isn't really a thing where we live unless it is going to be for a party. People put pumpkins outside their houses to welcome trick or treaters though. And it is an unwritten rule in our village that you don't call at houses with no pumpkins outside.

You are tuning a serial killer into some kind of party theme ? Hmm

I am Scottish. Grew up here in the 70s. Nobody decorated for Halloween beyond a turnip lantern.

HoldMyLobster · 11/10/2019 00:28

A doggy daycare near us has started decorating. My dog actually barks at their skeleton dogs.

HalfManHalfLabrador · 11/10/2019 00:33

Never. Can’t stand Halloween and all the associated tat

DramaAlpaca · 11/10/2019 00:38

I used to, very reluctantly, do Halloween when the DC were small - but only because we'd moved to Ireland & Halloween is huge here & I couldn't really let the DC feel left out. Decorations would go up on 30th October & come down first thing on 1st November.

Now the DC are grown up I don't do Halloween. The outside lights stay off, the house is dark & we ignore any rings of the doorbell. The unwritten rule is that kids only go trick or treating at houses that are decorated & obviously doing Halloween, but we still get a few chancers. I just ignore, ignore, ignore.

Can you tell I hate Halloween? Grin

UK here.

Decorate first day of half term break, as an activity.

Usually do paper crafts and then get the box out of the loft. Quite rare I buy new as have had since DD (now 15) was little and they're good as new.

On the night itself we put the carved pumpkins on top of the porch and then I have tealights placed all along the side of the path (but not in the way of flammable outfits!) It's very cute.

I'd say it's 60/40 decorate/don't decorate round here (NW England) and we use that to guide us to Trick or Treat friendly houses.

AlkaSeltz · 11/10/2019 01:06

@AwdBovril
Could possibly be persuaded to do a pumpkin, if they weren't so damned heavy (we don't have a car).

You can't carry a pumpkin? Confused

I don't drive either. Never occurred to me that I shouldn't be buying pumpkins for that reason...

topoftheworld1 · 11/10/2019 03:00

Had to laugh when someone said Waitrose don't have any decorations!

Ours are already up! Kids love it, it's just a bit of fun for them. We reuse them year after year, same as Xmas things. The streets are with packed with kids on Halloween where we live, I think it's a bit of fun for them.

Do think it's generational though, my parents can't understand it. definitely a much bigger deal now than it was a few years ago. More commercialised I suppose.

Fabuleuse · 11/10/2019 06:56

Absolutely never. I don't like Halloween. I let DS go to fancy dress parties in a non-scary type costume but that's it. Apart from that Halloween doesn't exist for us! We live in a small quiet street and no-one seems to go guising here anyway.

falcon5 · 11/10/2019 07:50

In the interests of fairness I should point out I happily appropriate any festivity going in the dark months.... it's not too bad to new new year - halloween, diwali, guy fawkes, Christmas. Bit bleak on the other side- what am I missing from January to March?

SpiderCharlotte · 11/10/2019 08:11

I have a glass pumpkin lantern that I put on the door step every year along with a carved pumpkin that the DC's will do on the day. That's it.

Lowlandlucky · 11/10/2019 08:31

GeneHuntLover · 11/10/2019 08:35

I couldn't carry a pumpkin either, don't assume everyone is able bodied

MegaClutterSlut · 11/10/2019 08:38

I started the weekend just gone. In my defense we do a halloween party every year and have 8 big plastic tubs full of decs and it takes weeks to put it all up. Secretly hope's no one pops round as I will look like a right weirdo Blush

TeenPlusTwenties · 11/10/2019 08:39

October 31st. They come down 1st Nov. Strictly a 1 day event.

Rockbird · 11/10/2019 08:41

Never. We are never in for Halloween as we always go to a family gathering so I think it's mean to put up decs and have everyone expect great things from you, only to find you're not in on The Day Grin

HotChocolateLover · 11/10/2019 08:41

I didn’t know this was a thing. I put a few things out on the 31st of October (including the pumpkin to entice the trick or treaters) nothing else.

AlkaSeltz · 11/10/2019 09:46

@GeneHuntLover

I don't. But given that she implies that she walks home from the shops carrying her shopping, as she doesn't drive but finds pumpkins too heavy to carry, it seems fairly clear that this particular person is.

AlanThePig · 11/10/2019 10:24

My flower pots went out last week. I have an autumn wreath that stays on now until December but I don’t actually put anything up until Halloween itself.

When do you put up your Halloween decs?
