A day or two before Halloween.

Doesn’t bother me at all if people want to do that- lovely, if they enjoy it and their kids do, brilliant. I myself am completely inadequate domestically so am earnestly hoping it doesn’t become too much of a ‘thing’ such that it’s noteworthy if you don’t, like Christmas is. There’s enough expectation on people, especially women, as it is.

But as long as I can stay out of it without feeling guilty for not participating, knock yourselves out as far as I’m concerned! 🕷🦇🧛🏻‍♂️🧟‍♂️🎃☠️👻

Only on mumsnet would posters be professionally offended that other posters don't see the point in putting decorations up for Halloween Grin

Honestly, you do you. I don't do it and noone I know in RL does it, clearly some do otherwise Asda wouldn't be full of plastic shite from October 1st.

For the last time.
I don't care if people don't do anything for Halloween.
I just get pissed off that every year people trot out to insult people who do.
You live your life I will live mine but I dont feel the need to insult you for your choices just to make myself feel better or more superior.

@AmIChangingagain guising is what we do. Not trick or treating What's the difference? And does it really matter?

PixieDustt · 12/10/2019 23:03

Never, hate Halloween 🎃😂

roisinagusniamh · 12/10/2019 23:30

@CupCupGoose thanks for the recommendation of Lucy Bee stuff. It's hard to find soaps that are free of palm oil.

mathanxiety · 13/10/2019 03:32

I don't think only pagans should be able to celebrate Halloween either, but I respect their need to.

It's a Christian holiday too - the feast of All Saints (November 1) is a holy day of obligation in many dioceses if you're RC.

Guising - what kids do at Halloween. Going round the doors but they have to do something like tell jokes or sing a song for their sweets.

That is what trick or treating is. Most people can't be arsed to get the kids to sing or whatever because your house gets very cold when you stand in the open doorway listening to a recitation of Mary Had a Little Lamb, and the knock knock jokes of five year olds tend to be underwhelming. So it's just treating really. A win win.

One pissing wet Hallowe'en night when DD1 was 4, I put DS in the buggy and dressed DD up in her costume, and off we went for half an hour. We encountered one weirdo who insisted on interviewing DD at length on her front porch before she handed over a fun size packet of Skittles, while poor DS and I stood in the rain on the sidewalk. Everyone else had left a bowl of candy out on their porches with a sign saying 'help yourself'.

As an individual Halloween could easily pass by without my doing anything (Actually that's a lie, I like a scary book this time of year.)

But my children look forward to trick and treating so I would stick a few things on the front downstairs windows and get pumpkins a few days before (the number the few is depends on how the 31st falls in with the school holiday). On the day I put the outside things up.

My children are older now, and the youngest losing interest in it, so not sure how this year will pan out. Might do nothing.

I've a neighbor who has had stuff up since the beginning of October. They do every year, near the 31st they go all out. It's quite impressive!!! (They are the same for Christmas.) Rest of the neigbours are on the day for few days before.

To not 'know it is a thing' you'd want to every October to have never gone out the house (or walk around not noticing other people's houses), not watch TV or have been on MN before.

Otherwise it just seems like an odd statement. Almost like you want to show how superior you are to people because you don't do Halloween. Which is odd because it's not an achievement, it's a choice.

Especially enjoying those who claim they don't decorate only put a pumpkin or two out. So in fact do decorate!!
