On Halloween. It's not Christmas FFS.

dreichsky · 11/10/2019 14:34

In my bit of the USA they are steadily going up, but the laggards like me haven't managed it yet. DC will start complaining soon.

dreichsky · 11/10/2019 14:39

Certainly not good for children.

All the dc round here would strongly disagree. There is building excitement about costumes and going out.
Large numbers of houses are decorated, sweets handed out, dogs dressed up, adults drink hot laced drinks, people wrap up and sit on their porches or on the sidewalks. The local church opens and hands out little bundles. It is a fantastic community event.

Erm nope. Save decorations for Christmas. Though we do carve a pumpkin each and put them outside on Halloween night.

HoldMyLobster · 11/10/2019 14:57

My kids have finally grown out of trick or treating and I'm quite sad. The road beside ours is full of houses and gardens with decorations. One of them has a garden filled with props, gravestones, skeletons, fake smoke, scary music - the kids love going through it to get their treat. Another sets up a microphone and speaker, and each kid sings to get their treat. At another they ask questions, and if you get the answer wrong you get a sprout rather than a treat.

The same street also puts out luminaria on Christmas Eve, and a sign saying 'Santa land here'.

I like living in a community that enjoys doing this stuff together.

BarbedBloom · 11/10/2019 15:05

Week before. I celebrate Samhain so a lot of mine are pagan based, but I do put a pumpkin outside the door to show it is okay to trick or treat here. It is my favourite holiday

RavenLG · 11/10/2019 15:21

I don't decorate unless we have a party then just drag the box of old decorations out, I wouldn't buy new things anymore. It's nice to see people aware of the plastic issue, I hope that continues when thinking about xmas decs too.

soggypizza · 11/10/2019 15:32

There is a great sense of community around here on Halloween - people really get into it - kids coming to doors all dressed up, always polite and grateful for their treats - neighbours greeting each other. The rule of only visiting homes with a lit lantern seems to work well. Kids love it but so do the adults.

sue51 · 11/10/2019 15:34

Never but I do get some sweets incase anyone calls round.

Egghead68 · 11/10/2019 15:48

So do I and then I eat them.

likeridingabike · 11/10/2019 15:50

holdmylobster Is that doggie daycare in the US?

peachgreen · 11/10/2019 16:02

Mine are up. Just an autumn leaves garland over the fireplace, some mottled glass pumpkin string lights, a spooky lantern for the front step and a welcome sign wreath on the front door. Then we'll carve pumpkins a few days before and leave them out.

HoldMyLobster · 11/10/2019 16:04

holdmylobster Is that doggie daycare in the US?

It is :-)

My dog loves it.

ohtheholidays · 11/10/2019 16:20

The decorations in the house,so the frontroom, the stairs and the hallway(we do the bathroom and kitchen as well if were having a party)all go up the day before and come down the day after.

The decorations for the garden go up early in the morning on the 31st and get taken in very very late the same night.

Were in the UK but it's a big thing where we are,we had over 130 trick or treaters last year and yes they were all different children and all dressed up.

I really like Halloween and my DH loves it so I go along with all of the decorations for him and our 5DC just like he goes along with all of the decorations for Christmas which is my favourite time of year.

We don't chuck our decorations into land fill neither after one use, some have been going strong for 20 years now.

130 trick or treaters ShockShock

I’ve never had a single person knock on our door in my entire life. It’s def not a thing everywhere.

Trewser · 11/10/2019 16:27

We've never had a single one either.

PhilomenaButterfly · 11/10/2019 16:28

Now! 🎃

beethebee · 11/10/2019 16:30

Halloween decorations? Shock

What fresh hell of consumerist excess is this?

Snibril · 11/10/2019 16:31

Our decorations are put up a day or so before the 31st. As someone with witchy tendencies it's important to me to have at least some scary faces in the windows and some seasonal lights although in reality it's usually much more than that! I like to believe that some carefully chosen adornments will help to drive any negative energy from my home. I also prefer to make my house as eye catching as possible to show that the local children are welcome here, rather than disturbing any neighbours who may be frail or vulnerable. They are always greeted with suitably gruesome home baking which the children and I will start to prepare during half term. It's very much a community event here.

OtraCosaMariposa · 11/10/2019 17:40

I assumed all the decorations in the shops were for people having parties. Genuinely had no idea that people decorated their homes just because.

Exactly this. Of course you'd want to decorate for a Halloween party, just as you'd blow up balloons and have streamers for a kids' birthday party. But I have never in my 47 years seen or heard of people decorating their houses "just because".

TeenPlusTwenties · 11/10/2019 17:47

We decorate the front windows and the hall so that callers can see we are participating. These are a mixture of hand made things from when the DC were younger and lights & other items bought in November when they are half price or less. We normally get ~80 callers.

Mimilamore · 11/10/2019 17:50

Please...... no way

Willow2017 · 11/10/2019 17:53

People decorate outside at Xmas, people put decorations outside for birthdays and that's apparently ok so why is it that people who do it at Halloween and have done for years do it "just because"?

All these people who don't do something but are happy to make fun of or criticise those who do!

I don't do things I know other people do, it doesn't interest me but I don't try and talk down to them, get sneery because they enjoy it and I don't.

Live and let live.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 11/10/2019 17:57

I have some jack-o-lantern tealight holders that will be on the mantelpiece for a day or two around Hallowe'en. I will also, as is now traditional, serve Nigella's slime soup with my addition of cheese-on-ghost.

Leflic · 11/10/2019 18:03

One the day, down when we’ve run out of sweets.

It’s not Halloween “season”. it’s one night. Maybe all Souls Day the next day if you are Christian.

Yeah. I judge those that think it goes on for weeks.
