Are there any conspiracy theories that you just think could have an element of truth?

I love all things conspiracy theory - from a psychological/social point of view it's interesting to see what makes people fearful or pessimistic.

But I often do see some conspiracy theories a bit like Urban legends in that they could be an exaggerated truth.

Are there any conspiracy theories or rumours that you just think 'maybe...' or even ones you're completely sold on.

I don’t really understand the 9/11 ones. Before it happened did anyone think a terrorist would fly into a building & the building would then collapse? It would be much more difficult to do the same again now. However that’s not to say the US government didn’t manipulate evidence & use it in their favour.
Also there are dozens of terrorist threats that we in the UK don’t hear of until a case goes to court.

Jill Dando is weird, the fact it’s so high profile & no evidence.

Don’t believe the man in the bag killed himself or DK.

I think JFK was likely killed by an accidental shot from the SS.

I think most gov cover ups are on a much smaller scale which are more plausible but hidden as they are probably mundane. However because so many conspiracy theories are crazy eg lizard people all theorists get lumped in the nut job category & the gov can carry on unnoticed.

To be a CT, must include claim that a big (possibly secret) organisation is keeping true info from you.

Of course CTs all have "an element of truth". That's part of how the CT sucks you in. There really is a pizza parlour called Comet in Washington DC. Rest of the CT is outrageous lies.

Are outrageous parts of CTs ever true? Sure, it's extremely outrageous that someone killed a bunch of little kids at Sandy Hook. Does not mean that shooting is a fabricated story to promote anti-gun laws.

Is it true that sometimes powerful organisations try to get away with cover-ups of outrageous acts? Sure, but rarely get away with it for long. Big secrets are almost impossible to keep.

CTs are embraced by people who don't want to believe that chaos runs the world.

I assumed with Grenfell that the body count may have been higher than official figures but if not everyone living there was accounted for or had family how can they be missed & identified?

QOFE · 19/05/2019 11:59

@NorthernRunner - what is the SAS man's name? Should be easy enough to check if he really vanished along with a cab driver!

NorthernRunner · 19/05/2019 12:01

QOFE- I cant remember but could easily find out. I won’t put it on here though, after everything I’ve already said!

QOFE · 19/05/2019 12:02

And as for Grenfell, if there was no official proof of exactly how many were in the building then obviously we will never know exactly how many people died or who they were.

I would think it very likely that there were people inside who had no family or friends to report them missing, no tenancy agreement as subletting/squatting/sofa surfing, no documentation as not in the country legally etc. The official death toll is based on who it is known was inside and has not been seen since isn't it?

QOFE · 19/05/2019 12:03

@NorthernRunner - why not? I assume it was in the news at the time and if his widow is posting every year on FB about it it's hardly a secret!

Ohnotanothernamechange · 19/05/2019 12:17

QOFE, this and also the fire was apparently hotter than a crematorium and burned for over 24 hours before finally being extinguished, so many bodies would have been burned to ashes.

fghkhfdryjkv · 19/05/2019 12:22

I don't believe Hitler died in the bunker. I 100% believe he got to Argentina and lived out his life there.

darklady64 · 19/05/2019 12:23

Also, for those who think the moon-landings were faked, who put these on the moon? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lunar_Laser_Ranging_experiment

Oh - and don't tell Buzz Aldrin that he never went there Grin

Not that I don't love the odd conspiracy theory programme on Netflix on a rainy Sunday, but I do draw the line at some of them.

catlady999 · 19/05/2019 12:27

Re Grenfell I live very close and know some of the families involved. I would point out that the contents of each flat were shifted for human remains. While it is theoretically possible that someone was missed, I believe that the figure of 72 is as accurate as possible. Exhaustive enquiries have been made about who was in the Tower that night - hence the exposure of fraudulent claims.

What is a more likely conspiracy appears to be that no one has been brought to justice or seems likely to be in the foreseeable future.

DoomOnTheBroom · 19/05/2019 12:51

Wasn't it said that Diana would have survived if she'd been wearing a seatbelt? Seems a fairly shitty assassination attempt if it could have been foiled so easily...

hoteltango · 19/05/2019 12:59

fancynancyclancy - The twin towers' design (and probably a number of skyscrapers) took into account the effect of an aircraft flying into them. I think it's been a planning condition for a long time. That's because there was an incident back in 1945 when an aircraft flew into the Empire State Building in thick fog. The towers fell in the way they were designed to do. It was the design that kept them standing after the initial impacts. What hadn't been designed for, though, was that since they were built, aircraft are bigger and carry much more fuel.

The idea of deliberately flying aircraft into tall buildings occurred in fiction. I think it was Michael Crichton who wrote a story involving that. But the best known is the first episode of "The Lone Gunmen" which was a spin-off of "The X-Files". That episode aired in the March before 9/11 and involved a plot to fly an aircraft into the World Trade Center to raise fears of terrorism to increase arms funding.

fancynancyclancy · 19/05/2019 13:05

But it was still a huge shock that it actually happened, not by accident but as a terrorist attack & that the towers actually collapsed.

tectonicplates · 19/05/2019 13:27

Indeed. This is just common sense, really. Not even a conspiracy theory.

The King's Cross fire happened in 1987. It took until 2004 to identify the last victim, because he was homeless and nobody had known to report him missing. news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/3419647.stm

Cruddles · 19/05/2019 13:45

A friend of mine is into conspiracy theories. I don't pay attention when he talks about them, his main fixation is the Sandy Hook shootings were fake for some reason, I don't know the details why

AgentCooper · 19/05/2019 14:32

I’m a bit obsessed with the Kennedys and I reckon JFK was taken out by the government in cahoots with the Mafia. His VP Lyndon Johnson was much more of a traditionalist and less trouble than Kennedy. Jack Ruby then killing Lee Harvey Oswald was all part of the plan I reckon.

Then Bobby was murdered by the Mafia because he made it his business to put an end to organised crime when both he and his brother definitely had had connections with the Mafia.

Cruddles I can’t listen to anyone who denies Sandy Hook happened. Imagine your beloved elementary school aged child is killed and you have creeps like Alex Jones calling you a crisis actor. The fact that one of the fathers died by suicide recently after being hounded for years by these idiots made me sick to my stomach.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 19/05/2019 14:36

The sandy hook conspiracy is more - what type of person believes that crap about it being fake, and how can anyone that stupid manage to survive to adulthood?

catlady999 · 19/05/2019 14:38

Tectonic and others, there are no unidentified remains in Grenfell that anyone has found. As I said above people had a horrible job of sifting all the contents of the flats. They have even found people's pets. No more human remains were found - although it is theoretically possible. The people I know who lived there and have met since are content that all flats are accounted for and 72 is about right.

Despite what the media seemed to portray of a tower block teeming with illegal immigrants, subletting, most of the tenants were legal and had been there some time. There were a few sub letters and some gave evidence at the enquiry and were encouraged to come forward.

Comments about 400 dead, because someone who lives in London heard a rumour are silly and detract from the struggle of survivors and those homeless as a result, to access suitable housing and bring those responsible to justice.

People I know had to deal with the immediate aftermath and it is insulting in the extreme to imply they are part of the cover up.

StealthPolarBear · 19/05/2019 14:49

". I believe the USSR sent others up before him but they died due to issues with their craft."
That seems plausible.

cranstonmanor · 19/05/2019 14:55

The only 9/11 ‘conspiracy’ I believe is in the absolute lack of action taken against Saudi Arabia afterwards (where most do the men came from).

I don't know about the others but SA had already tried and convicted Bin Laden in absentia for terrorist acts committed in The SA. What I don't understand is the whole reality show of murdering him in a different country (we got him) and giving him an anonymous burial at sea. They could have just extradited him to his own country, who would then chop his head of first thing next friday as per the outcome of the already held trial. He would have been given an anonymous grave anyway since that was part of his religious views. So they didn't need all the illegal acts that they did, just capture him and let interpoltake him back to his country. The rest was sorted. Now the whole thing reaks of american ego boosting material. It wasn't necessary so why did they need that? To get what done exactly? Looks like a second agenda to me.

GrouchyKiwi · 19/05/2019 15:11

hoteltango The author who wrote about planes being used as terrorist weapons was Tom Clancy. In one of his books (I think it was Debt of Honor) someone flew a commercial aircraft into the Capitol Hill building, killing pretty much all of Congress. NZ news interviewed Tom Clancy after the 9/11 attacks because of this.

BishopBrennansArse · 19/05/2019 15:20

The Jill Dando thing wasn't via tv research, I think she uncovered information in her private life re the ring. That's all I'm prepared to say.

I believe JFK was accidentally killed by his security detail, Harvey Oswald bodged it and was a convenient culprit.

I believe the USSR killed several cosmonauts before Gagarin.

I also don't think David Kelley or the spy in the bag were suicides.

FindaPenny · 19/05/2019 15:31

I love conspiracies... 9/11....always found it convenient they found the passports of hijackers at crash sites.... Supposedly one was found by a member of the public.

Moon landing seems suspicious to me. To get to the moon you must travel 238,855 miles.... Since then, the furthest we have gone into space is 400 miles!!!!
