Are there any conspiracy theories that you just think could have an element of truth?

I love all things conspiracy theory - from a psychological/social point of view it's interesting to see what makes people fearful or pessimistic.

But I often do see some conspiracy theories a bit like Urban legends in that they could be an exaggerated truth.

Are there any conspiracy theories or rumours that you just think 'maybe...' or even ones you're completely sold on.

The Netflix documentary on the flat earthers was eye opening.
The laser test proved it was curved 100%, but they always manage to find some explanation against any proof

The funniest part of the conspiracy is what they believe is on the other side!

It seems a common belief between some of them that the flat earth is sitting on a giant turtle Hmm

Before seeing the Netflix programme I just assumed it was a group of people having a bit of fun and being silly, turns out there are thousands and it’s deadly serious business

Firstimpression- exactly
I don’t think many people question that we’ve actually been into space, so the Mitchel and Webb sketch isn’t exactly debunking the moon landing conspiracy.

It’s the crazy thought that in the 60’s we’d managed to blast off from earth (not denying that) but then we landed on the moon.
Got out.
Took off again, and landed in England.
All whilst having no lasting damage from radiation

A colleague showed me NASA’s recently released short film of their plan to go to the moon by 2024 and even the wording used throughout the video makes out that this would be the first time.

When we ‘landed on the moon’ in 69, it had only taken 9 years from planning to completion and that was at a time before jumbo jets were invented

This time, they’ve been working on it since 2011 and if they make it by 2024 it will be 13 years and that’s in a day and age of huge technological advances and with the ‘experience’ of doing it before

Someone's been reading too much Terry Pratchett. Grin

origamiunicorn · 25/05/2019 07:57

I can't believe how we went to the Moon in '69 when we don't seem to have been able to go back.

What I can't get over though, is that it was a Space Race. Russia would have wanted to prove in any way they could that it didn't happen.

bebeboeuf · 25/05/2019 07:58

That’s what I thought until I looked into it after hearing about it, and turns out there’s some ancient mythology that does indeed describe the earth being on a tortoise / turtle (all held up by elephants)

Terry pratchett ran with that and so did the flat earthers Grin

bebeboeuf · 25/05/2019 07:59

Maybe Russia were pleased to not have to keep working on something they knew wasn’t possible and they could stop wasting money ?

bebeboeuf · 25/05/2019 08:00

I’ve just realised I’ve said landed in England - I obviously meant landed back on earth.
I’m in the middle of making breakfast so my mind wandered Grin

origamiunicorn · 25/05/2019 08:02

Ah I see. I guess they had to try and explain things they didn't understand as best they could.

No one's going to be interested in their moon voyage in 5 years time if everyone think they've already been. Interested to see if they make it.

bebeboeuf · 25/05/2019 08:03

Itl be fanstastic if they make it this time.
It’s quite exciting and I can imagine we would be reliving some of the excitement experiences by people in the late 60’s all over the world. Could be quite a special time

bebeboeuf · 25/05/2019 08:05

Buzz aldrin in his book says that his biggest regret about going to the moon was not switching the camera on to film the take off from the moon to come home Hmm

Firstimpressionsofearth · 25/05/2019 08:08

I saw one flat earth thing where they thought beyond the ice are more world's.

What I don't understand is haven't they sent robots to mars! So why are they struggling to go back to the moon.

Lweji · 25/05/2019 09:41

So why are they struggling to go back to the moon.

They're not struggling.
There's no incentive for humans to go to the moon, apart from showing off.

But you may not be familiar with more recent moon exploration.
Mainly by China in recent years. But I think it's just a stepping stone for other ventures.

Lweji · 25/05/2019 09:53

For context.
The new objectives are much more than just landing, collecting rocks and take off.

bebeboeuf · 25/05/2019 11:17

The nasa short film goes into their plans in quite some detail. All very exciting if it can work out to be a stepping stone to mars.

NotBadConsidering · 25/05/2019 12:52

But if you don’t believe they’ve done it before in 1969, why will you believe them if they say they’ve done it again?

bebeboeuf · 25/05/2019 14:03

Technology and developments has advanced a lot in 50 years

bluewavysea · 26/05/2019 15:30

So maybe Buzz Aldrin made a Freudian slip when he said those words to that little girl.

TheInvestigator · 26/05/2019 15:37

What buzz Aldrin said to that girl wasn't what it's been made out to be. She asked why they went to the moon back then but havnt gone now and he said it was because we had never been... That's why they did it. But they've been now, done that and it costs way too much money so they havnt gone back. A "been there, done that" situation.

GinUnicorn · 26/05/2019 15:53

Another David Kelly here. I don’t tend to believe conspiracy theories but I don’t know anyone who believes it was suicide.

dreamyspires · 26/05/2019 18:13

The Investiator I never thought of it in that context. I agree with you, that is more than likely what he meant. Smile

HermioneMakepeace · 27/05/2019 03:07

A conspiracy theory about The Tavistock Clinic some years ago was that they were routinely and purposefully mis-diagnosing Borderline Personality Disorder in perfectly adequate mothers in order to have their children taken away by Social Services.

They have since moved on to mis-diagnosing trans children and recommending brutal hormone treatment and non-reversible surgery.

The Tavistock Clinic should be shut down, IMO.

Jiggles101 · 02/06/2019 20:05

But a BPD dx wouldn't mean someone's children would be taken away? And why would the money be in touch with Tavistock in the first place?

Not sure I understand that one.

HermioneMakepeace · 03/06/2019 05:36

@Jiggles101 SS refer lots of families to the Tavistock for assessment. Many of the MOTHERS (not fathers) who went there ended up with a diagnosis of BPD. As it is considered to be incurable, this gave SS the ‘evidence’ it needed in such cases to claim future possible emotional abuse and remove the children from the home. Even, as in many cases, there was no history of abuse.

FlameIngSofa · 03/06/2019 09:11

Apologies if this has been said before but 'conspiracy theory' is a term often used to deflect attention away from an increasingly common practice, which is basically lying and manipulating to get your way. And either there's truth in that or there isn't. For example, there's a guy who has spent six years exposing the fact (as far as he's concerned) that Panorama faked a chemical attack in Syria, using crisis actors and the such. Now, that's something that is either true or false. If true, it raises serious questions about the BBC and could finish Panorama forever. However, the fact it's taken him six years perhaps shows the problem: that if you happen on to something that is a conspiracy you're going to have to either drop it or accept that you could be dedicating a large chunk of your life to exposing it with no guarantee of success.
