Good. Hopefully more convictions for this will follow.

Hefzi · 01/02/2019 15:30

Good. Given it's been illegal since 1985, it's long overdue.

StealthPolarBear · 01/02/2019 15:32

I've just started a thread on this. Good. However I don't understand how men aren't bring prosecuted

Racecardriver · 01/02/2019 15:33

Well this is long overdue.

Spanglyprincess1 · 01/02/2019 15:35

I don't understand the men comment, generally fgm is performed on women by women.its good news that there has been a prosecution. hopefully it will stop this practice in the UK at least.

StealthPolarBear · 01/02/2019 15:36

Ah is it. I had assumed the opposite. Thanks.

FusionChefGeoff · 01/02/2019 15:37

Genuine question: why does circumcision (for non medical reasons) not count as MGM?

Seaseasea · 01/02/2019 15:38

So awful that this is the first conviction, I really Hope this means they are pushing against it.
Male circumcision should be illegal too, excluding medical reasons, I’m also curious as to why that’s not illegal actually now you mention it?

OP posts:
PlantsArePeopleToo · 01/02/2019 15:38

There's always one 🙄

Burpsandfustles · 01/02/2019 15:39

Fusion it's so embedded in powerful cultures but I do belive we are as a society gently moving towards no circumcision

RiverTam · 01/02/2019 15:40

I disagree completely with male circumcision for non-medical reasons but it is a totally different thing to FGM.

PlantsArePeopleToo · 01/02/2019 15:40

Because male circumcision and FGM are NOT the same. Neither are right but it's ridiculous to compare them.

Maybe it should be. Yes, it's nowhere near as dangerous or damaging as fgm but I can see your point. So, when are you going to start campaigning about it?

So....getting back to the point

PerkingFaintly · 01/02/2019 15:42

I want to say good, but of course there's nothing good about the situation in the first place.

So I'll stick with, I'm very glad she's been successfully prosecuted. No word on sentencing yet, but BBC story says it can be up to 14 years.

Elfinablender · 01/02/2019 15:42

Back to the point .... About bloody time.

Spanglyprincess1 · 01/02/2019 15:42

It's the medical implications. There are genuine medical reason that some men have to be circumcised eg tight foreskins causing issues urinating etc etc.
For women similar types of surgery eg for medical reasons do not count as fgm either (they are listed in the definition of the statute).

It's a complex price of legislation as things such as clitirial peircings could fall foul as they are not medical but these are performed with informed consent on adults, fgm generally isn't and the more severe types cause severe complications

PlantsArePeopleToo · 01/02/2019 15:43

Tbf FGM used to be called female circumcision however the name was changed precisely to differenate it from male circumcision.

Burpsandfustles · 01/02/2019 15:44

Why is it Goady?

Actually circumcision can be dangerous, damaging, psychology harming... And cuts a child's gentiles. How is it so different?

PlantsArePeopleToo · 01/02/2019 15:45

By asking how it is different you are showing just how goady you are. Go away.

Burpsandfustles · 01/02/2019 15:47

Excuse me?

Now I'm being Goady as well?

So I guess every single poster who disagrees with all child's gentiles being cut and without their consent will be Goady...

Confused
IStillMissBlockbuster · 01/02/2019 15:47

I hope that some kind of preventative measures are being put in place as well. I fully condemn FGM but something about jailing the mother doesn't sit spectacularly well with me.
