@FusionChefGeoff have a look at your genitalia. There’s a type of FGM than involved amputation of those outer flaps and the sewing what remains up and leaving a small hole for urine and menstrual blood. This is not an uncommon type.

Burp. Did I say it was ok and that I was saying male circumcision was no big deal, or that it needed to be increased so something?

A mismanaged male circumcision leads to many horrible issues, and yes dead. It isn’t FMG. They are separate issues. This is a thread quite specially about FGM. So tell me why when FGM is discussed, without fail, so does male circumcision?

Patriarchy.

As part of my job I can access patient medical details (known as summary care records), I looked at one a few months ago and there was a marker on there saying the child was at risk of fgm. I’ve never seen that before. The record was for a baby so I assume the mother had it done and it was noted during pregnancy/labour.

YouCantBeSirius · 01/02/2019 16:41

Hopefully this will lead to more successful prosecutions now. I'm sure there was an unsuccessful attempt to prosecute someone a few years ago. Might have been a doctor?

I couldn't answer that red because I don't monitor or go on all threads on this and I can't remember the last time I was on fgm thread it may have even been when that story I spoke of broke back in 2016.

I guess off the top of my head someone would mention it, it's because both do remove body parts from children unnecessarily and without their consent?

I didn't realise it was then thrown into a direct comparison of which one was worse and caused more pain etc.

Op I don't see how social workers could tackle this!

Education, lessons in bodily autonomy... Consent... Freedom etc.... Support youngsters... I don't know... As said many are hidden away in faith schools how would you ever reach them?

Burpsandfustles · 01/02/2019 16:44

Mud that's interesting but what could be done about it?

OhTheRoses · 01/02/2019 16:50

Shocking that this is the first prosecution since 1985. It's a criminal act. It requires prosecution not cultural sensitivity. Many many drs, nurses and social workers are to blame for being sensitive to diversity and not dealing with it. Cut/injured child. Mother and father are responsible even if they didnt personally do it. Prison sentences would be far more effective in preventing it than education. Those who make the decisions are probably too busy discussing "rights" at conferences rather than dealing with what is wrong, cruel and illegal.

Nnnnnineteen · 01/02/2019 16:54

I live in an area where there is a high number of recorded mothers identified as having had fgm. There is a huge drive on educating these women not to do it to their daughters, but as a pp said, schools are also vigilant about spotting signs now. Despite this, many girls are taken back to parents' country of birth and having it done. They can't prosecute unless there is very concrete evidence as to who did it, which is why previous cases have not ended in prosecution. It is barbaric.

YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet · 01/02/2019 17:04

Hello everyone. We're getting quite a number of reports through about various personal attacks on this thread. This is obviously a horrendous story and a very emotive issue, but can we please ask that you bear the Talk Guidelines in mind when posting, and express your disagreement with others without resorting to name calling?

Thanks.

Seaseasea · 01/02/2019 17:11

I guess another issue is if someone suspects it, like a teacher, what realistically could they do to prove it?
They can’t force girls to show their genitals (rightly so) but if they’ve been forced to keep quiet, then it’ll continue as it is to keep happening to their sisters etc.
One conviction in 35 years, there really is no justice for girls is there Sad

Deary me, some folk really hate a light being shone on their ignorance, don't they

TopBitchoftheWitches · 01/02/2019 17:11

@mnhq

I can't help it when posters are clearly uneducated, ignorant and have no idea what they are talking about.

AnyFucker · 01/02/2019 17:12

If a teacher suspects FGM, or that FGM is planned, there is very clear guidance on what they should do

AnyFucker · 01/02/2019 17:13

And in actual fact, if you do suspect and fail to follow guidance, then you can also be prosecuted

I agree oh the roses but how on earth do you stop it? Or pre empt it etc?

It's so hard to pin down and for the poor girl... She's violated once by the act, then has the awful feelings conflicting between what's been done and her own parents.. She's never going to know any different..

What on earth can people do?

TopBitchoftheWitches · 01/02/2019 17:16

This young girl is 3 years old. Just think about that.

ladymalfoy · 01/02/2019 17:16

I have yet to be given information on FGM to share with my pupils. Because the young women and girls I teach might be affected by it. I can’t inform them that it’s wrong and provide guidance because they might tell their parents who will complain.

Burpsandfustles · 01/02/2019 17:16

How can you even suspect it though?
An over heard conversations?

It is GENITALS not gentiles ffs

AnyFucker · 01/02/2019 17:19

Just google "mandatory reporting of FGM"

Ignorance is no excuse

brizzledrizzle · 01/02/2019 17:20

Whilst I don't agree with circumcision, discussing it doesn't have a place on this thread as it is about as comparable to FGM as a stubbed toe is to a broken ankle. By all means discuss it but on a different thread perhaps?

Seaseasea · 01/02/2019 17:20

There are certain communities more ‘at risk’ but it would raise all kinds of conflicts if they were singled out to be questioned I suppose.
I went searching for more information on this and the NSPCC says there were over 100 girls having treatment for FGM in 2016. Why are their parents not being prosecuted?
