iPhone Snobbery

hippoherostandinghere · 01/02/2019 13:56

It's a real thing, isn't it. I'm in the process of getting a new phone and have ordered a Samsung Galaxy s9. Anyone i have mentioned it to have all said 'oh I could never go to android after having an apple phone' 🙄

I have an iPhone now, and yes it is good, but the battery life is shocking, and I can't really think of anything it does that I couldn't get in another phone. I've had a mixture of iPhones and Samsungs in the past and have liked them both for different reasons. So why do I feel judged?!

Another motivating factor is money. I got such a good deal for the latest Samsung compared to what the newest iPhone would have cost, I just can't justify the extra money.

So, will I regret it?

I think too once theyve spent so much for so many years on a number of apple products they simply cant admit to themselves theyve been conned...

PuppyMonkey · 02/02/2019 11:55

My iPhone cost £250 brand new from John Lewis last May. Not all iPhones cost £700.

Samsung phones aren’t exactly cheap either imho.

Don’t know what pp means about not being able to navigate back on an iPhone?

VanGoghsDog · 02/02/2019 11:57

@SoupDragon

Yeah, so a load more taps and hassle for something is very simple on Android. I don't need to be told a 'work around' (I didn't ask for one), these are just a few examples of things you can't do on iPhone which someone asked for.

Obviously you're in love with your iPhone, which is fine, but I hate the one I have to use for work and I'm allowed to give examples of why.

As for the email correcting, no, I've asked several iPhone users how to get it to stop doing that and they all say it just sometimes won't let you change it unless you change it to what the spell check is suggesting. It's useless.

NicoAndTheNiners · 02/02/2019 11:58

I've always had android phones and normally Samsung. I love them, I find them easy to use, quick, they do everything I want and the battery life is good. Though I'm sad the Galaxys don't still have removeable/replaceable batteries which imho was a big selling point for them. If your battery wasn't very good after 2 years you could buy a new one on eBay for £12!

Everyone I know who has an iPhone has battery issues and loads seem to have smashed screens.

I do have an iPad which I love so I'm not anti Apple at all. Just love android phones.

VanGoghsDog · 02/02/2019 11:59

Not all iPhones cost £700.

No, some cost a thousand, which is what I was referring to.

See, it's hilarious, say anything negative about iPhone and you get jumped on. It's like iPhone users have been brainwashed, like some kind of borg, and cannot accept there are any negatives at all.

JacksonPillock · 02/02/2019 11:59

Samsung phones aren’t exactly cheap either imho

Well, like with your iPhone, there are cheap Samsung phones too.

Basically, anyone spending more than about £200-300 on a mobile is doing so because they have enough money to splash on a luxury item with very little added-benefit over the £200-300 models.

If someone has enough money to do that, fine. That's their choice. But to think they do it because of all the ADVANCED FEATURES and USER-FRIENDLINESS that you just couldn't possibly get on a cheaper phone is at best naive. More likely deluded.

Rockbird · 02/02/2019 12:01

It isn't Jackson. I've had nearly every model of iPhone. I use it for work and leisure. I use it far more than is good for me and yet, in nearly 12 years of straight usage nothing has ever made me think damn, why can't I do that?

I don't care about what phone people are using, forget the phones themselves; if iOS operated on a Samsung S9 I'd take a good look at it.

I'm asking a simple question about all these extra features that Android has over iOS. Plenty of people claim they're there but no one can name any.

Notmorewashing · 02/02/2019 12:01

I find Samsung users much more defensive and aggressive towards iPhone.

iPhone is obviously better if you want a cheaper version then find go ahead but I think for something one uses for all aspects of life it’s worth paying more for the best on the market.

calpop · 02/02/2019 12:02

Really? For me, that attitude is "so 2016". Everyone I speak to now laughs at peiple who get the latest iphone for being either mugs or a bit dim with technogy. Round her they're known as school-mum phones or Sales guys phones.

JaneJeffer · 02/02/2019 12:02

I hated my Samsung and my iPhone was actually cheaper.

Rockbird · 02/02/2019 12:03

And what's also interesting is how there are snarky comments coming from the Android side. It really does seem that it's impossible to discuss this calmly.

JacksonPillock · 02/02/2019 12:05

As has been said, Android is not a brand. The decision is not iPhone vs Android, as much as Apple would like you to think it is. They've been pulling that marketing trick since way back in the Mac vs PC days, to make you think you have a binary choice between their brand and 50 others! I don't know if they're extremely clever or the general public are extremely dumb, because it seems to have worked really well.

Unquestioning brand loyalty in general is not a good thing. For any major purchase I will research the best options and best value for money. That usually always rules out the most expensive options. The choice is never one brand vs all of the rest. For mobile phones, the choice is between Apple, Samsung, Sony, HTC, Huawei, Motorola, Wiley, LG, OnePlus, Google, Microsoft, etc. etc.

Imagine wilfully reducing that range of options to iPhone vs. Android! Terrible for the consumer, but great for Apple!

grenadezombie · 02/02/2019 12:08

I don’t give a shit who has what phone, but the idea that iPhone users are snobs when this thread from start to finish is full of android users slating apple users is just a wee bit of a giggle, don’t you think?

grenadezombie · 02/02/2019 12:09

I would suggest you get your parents to choose you a better school when you move up from primary.

This is the opposite of what I have found in real life

Rockbird · 02/02/2019 12:10

No, Android is an operating system. iOS is an operating system. That's the part I'm interested in. Apple happen to be the only company using iOS for obvious reasons. Yes of course that ties the hands.

So tell me the features of the Android operating system that I can only dream about.

grenadezombie · 02/02/2019 12:11

In real life nobody gives a toss.

JacksonPillock · 02/02/2019 12:13

I never said it had features you can only dream about. I have owned an iPhone and various other brands. The operating systems are near identical. But one requires that you spend about 3 times as much on the phone as the other.

cropcirclesinthefields · 02/02/2019 12:13

I went from apple to android last December, iPhone 6s to Huawei p20pro and I love it. The battery life and camera is brilliant I wish I'd done it earlier.

SwimmingJustKeepSwimming · 02/02/2019 12:14

I dont think its snobbery so much as ignorance/brand loyalty. Usually just makes me smile to myself irl.

differentnameforthis · 02/02/2019 12:14

The think I like about Samsung is that they don't their charger port with every.single.new.phone.they.release!!! My dh has iphones and ipad for work, they are constantly being upgraded because the battery/charger port/charger gives out easily, and with each new model the charger port is different. He bought a charging dock and within a few months the iphone that he bought it for died, and now it sits, unused and completely useless.

Yet I have several Samsung (and android) devices and one charger fits all. iphone rip off their customers and their customers seem to quite like it.

SwimmingJustKeepSwimming · 02/02/2019 12:15

And i think there's the reaction from non apple uses simply as so many apple users think they're superior for buying the most expensive/apple (as you can see just a few posts above.!)

differentnameforthis · 02/02/2019 12:15

It really isn't.

They ar not "work arounds" and I was pointing out where you were wrong about the things you claim you can't do on an iPhone.

as for the email correcting, no, I've asked several iPhone users how to get it to stop doing that and they all say it just sometimes won't let you change it unless you change it to what the spell check is suggesting

Turn off autocorrect and type properly.
