iPhone Snobbery

hippoherostandinghere · 01/02/2019 13:56

It's a real thing, isn't it. I'm in the process of getting a new phone and have ordered a Samsung Galaxy s9. Anyone i have mentioned it to have all said 'oh I could never go to android after having an apple phone' 🙄

I have an iPhone now, and yes it is good, but the battery life is shocking, and I can't really think of anything it does that I couldn't get in another phone. I've had a mixture of iPhones and Samsungs in the past and have liked them both for different reasons. So why do I feel judged?!

Another motivating factor is money. I got such a good deal for the latest Samsung compared to what the newest iPhone would have cost, I just can't justify the extra money.

So, will I regret it?

I struggle with android phones, apple is far more user friendly
That's only because your used to Iphone

It must be this because android is extremely simple to use. iPhones have all the app icons on the home page, whereas android usually has a clock on the homepage, the four or so main app icons below, and then a menu button that shows all the other app icons. That's literally it. Press the menu button in the bottom centre of the screen and you see a page of apps just like an iPhone homepage.

Vegisgrowingwell · 02/02/2019 10:33

I really don't get this thing about it being easier to use. My daughter has an iPhone, I have a Samsung. We have ipads too and it's very easy to chop and change between them all!!

JacksonPillock · 02/02/2019 10:35

They're all so incredibly similar that the main issue for me is wondering why people spend £800 or so on an iPhone/Galaxy S9/whatever top of the range model just came out when you can get a Moto G for about £250 which does EXACTLY the same thing. And there are tons of other brands and models available at that price. I used to buy the top of the range ones for years, then switched to the cheaper ones for my last 3 phones and they're exactly the same except a third of the price.

ArsenicNLace · 02/02/2019 10:36

It's not snobbery it's expressing a preference.

My personal phone is an iPhone my work phone a Samsung. Love the the iPhone hate the Samsung. The only positive with the Samsung is that it has a bigger screen.

Designerenvy · 02/02/2019 10:38

I have samsung phone snobbery. I have a Samsung galaxy 8 and love it. Hate I phones.
My kids have iPhone snobbery....love their I phoned.
Each to their own I say ( but Samsung's are the best Wink

HarrySnotter · 02/02/2019 10:38

It’s not snobbery, It’s just that for a lot people, once you’ve had an I phone, anything else just doesn’t match up, it might do the same things, and often more, but just not quite as well.

Absolutely disagree (with respect! 😁). I much prefer my Huawei P20 than the iPhone, which I gave to DS.

I don't get the iPhone devotion or why some people get so upset that not everyone loves them. I also have no idea how an adult can 'struggle' with a phone if it's not an iPhone.

Marketing.

PuppyMonkey · 02/02/2019 10:40

I occasionally have used DP’s Samsung and for me, I struggle to navigate stuff, I press things And nothing happens, things are slightly delayed opening. It’s very likely me being crap and being so used to iphone’s layout of apps, and I’m sure I’d get used to it.

DP also complains a lot about his Samsung. Eg he gets a text message notification almost immediately followed by another notification reminder that he’s got a notification. He swears a lot about this. I’m guessing it’s just him being crap too. Grin

SwimmingJustKeepSwimming · 02/02/2019 10:43

Its just clever marketing and of course tying them in . Once their apps are apple or music etc its been made hard to leave. And incredibly clever marketing that not onl y are people tied in to spending teice the price, but theyre proud of it!!

bit smug no longer apple user ( bit like those that give up smoking ...)

JacksonPillock · 02/02/2019 10:44

The thing is, being an iPhone devotee really limits your options. It's not really Android vs iPhone, it's Apple vs about 50 other brands that you're just ignoring for no good reason except [probably misplaced] brand loyalty.

If you were going to buy a new TV, wouldn't you look at all the options, perhaps google "best 42" TV under £1000 2019" or whatever, read reviews, etc.?

Or would you just say "no, I shall only have a Sony TV! No other TV is as easy to use or as good!"

Same goes for laptops, washing machines, cars, anything really! It's how I shop, anyway. Read reviews and research the best available model within my budget. For some reason (MARKETING), when it comes to Apple, that kind of logic goes out of the window for many people!

SwimmingJustKeepSwimming · 02/02/2019 10:46

Yep! That is it exactly. Apple have done so so well with their marketring and brand....

FlorencesHunger · 02/02/2019 10:47

I had an iPhone once and hated it, didn't like the look of it nor was it user friendly for me. Tried a Nokia android and hated it and then moved onto Samsung which I've stuck with for now and find it's great for me.
No restrictions and user friendly, although the most recent models are designed to break at any opportunity but when I dropped it in a bucket of water it survived with no issues.

I reckon there's better phones than Samsung but I'm not fussed about having the best tech, just whatever works for me.

Schmoobarb · 02/02/2019 10:51

I got a Sony but went back to apple when the contract was up. I do think Apple are very expensive though I bought my iPhone 7 Plus outright with a windfall I had but I don’t think I’d be able to do that again. Considering Huawei for next time

anniehm · 02/02/2019 10:57

I preferred my windows phone to either - but they are no longer supported so I now have a iPhone, terrible battery, doesn't take a sd card

Yulebealrite · 02/02/2019 10:57

Once you started to go down the apple route you are committed. Having got everything now linked then it would be a backward move to move to an android phone. They suck you in.

Rockbird · 02/02/2019 11:38

Still no one can tell me what I can't do on my iPhone...

SoupDragon · 02/02/2019 11:42

You can't sneer about iPhone users.

VanGoghsDog · 02/02/2019 11:42

@Rockbird

Plug in headphones, use the battery life for a reasonable time, navigate 'back', correct emails you've written when the phone has decided what it thinks you mean (god, the number of emails I've had to just abandon and start again because of the idiotic spell checker), use numbers, full stops and commas on the same keyboard as the letters (this is so annoying, having to switch keyboard just to put in a comma! Or exclamation mark)(or bracket).....

A million things you wouldn't know unless you had used both as I do.

VanGoghsDog · 02/02/2019 11:42

Oh, yeah, and dual SIM!

VanGoghsDog · 02/02/2019 11:43

And spend the other £700 on something more worthwhile!

futuredayspast · 02/02/2019 11:45

My work phone is an iphone and it doesn't do anything better or quicker than my personal Sony Xperia, which I got for about a third of the price. I don't get it!

SoupDragon · 02/02/2019 11:48

Plug in headphones

The phone comes with an adapter if you want to plug them in.

correct emails you've written when the phone has decided what it thinks you mean

Of course you can Confused

full stops

Double tap space bar

SoupDragon · 02/02/2019 11:52

For single numbers and punctuation marks, Touch the 123 key but don't release and slide your finger to the character you want. Then release.

DameSquashalot · 02/02/2019 11:53

@Fiona0x I have also switched from iPhone to Pixel and would never go back.

JacksonPillock · 02/02/2019 11:55

Still no one can tell me what I can't do on my iPhone

That's a bit like saying nobody can tell me what I can't do on my £3000 Sony TV, so I'm not going to consider ever buying a TV from another brand for a third of the price.
