iPhone Snobbery

hippoherostandinghere · 01/02/2019 13:56

It's a real thing, isn't it. I'm in the process of getting a new phone and have ordered a Samsung Galaxy s9. Anyone i have mentioned it to have all said 'oh I could never go to android after having an apple phone' 🙄

I have an iPhone now, and yes it is good, but the battery life is shocking, and I can't really think of anything it does that I couldn't get in another phone. I've had a mixture of iPhones and Samsungs in the past and have liked them both for different reasons. So why do I feel judged?!

Another motivating factor is money. I got such a good deal for the latest Samsung compared to what the newest iPhone would have cost, I just can't justify the extra money.

So, will I regret it?

I really don't understand why people get so arsy and about stuff that isn't true. Why do people give a shit what phones others choose?

katiescarlett1939 · 02/02/2019 12:17

I don't really care about brands - always had iPhones because I get on with them, they link to other devices in the house blah blah blah. Just work well for me.

But, actually, I've experienced a few non-Apple users being snobby. I've heard it expressed a few times that they've used their brains to make their choice, whereas I've just gone along with the crowd and am therefore less intelligent or savvy Grin

It's only a phone...

calpop · 02/02/2019 12:18

As has been said, Android is not a brand. The decision is not iPhone vs Android, as much as Apple would like you to think it is. They've been pulling that marketing trick since way back in the Mac vs PC days, to make you think you have a binary choice between their brand and 50 others! I don't know if they're extremely clever or the general public are extremely dumb, because it seems to have worked really well.

Exactly this. Android is an operating system, not a phone or a brand. Like ios is an operating system, which happens to be proprietary to Apple (though, ironically, is based on Unix, like Android). I think it's changing though. Apple shot themselves in the foot when they went over £1000 for a phone I think, and as we can see from the recent "shock" Apple profit warning. www.wired.co.uk/article/apple-profit-warning-share-price

It'll take a few more years for market forces to inevitably prevail, but, until then, meh, just buy whatever phone you like. There are hundreds to choose from now. But dont see an iPhone as a status symbol (or a Samsung Galaxy). Because they're not, and those days are over.

differentnameforthis · 02/02/2019 12:21

Neither do apple So explain why ever single ipone my dh has had over the last few years all have different charger ports then?

DameSquashalot · 02/02/2019 12:21

I went back to Apple after trying a Nokia and a Samsung. I really hated the Samsung. I found it so hard to use.

I like the unlimited storage with Google Pixel. My iPhone filled up at a very crucial moment on holiday. Very annoying.

I love the camera on the Pixel.

I'm sure all my apps were transferred to my Pixel from my iPhone. Contacts too which is one thing that put me off moving from iPhone.

I'm not trying to be snobby here, I like to take a rational approach to things like this, but those people are kind of right. It's another good example of Apple's extremely successful marketing tactics. I have friends who buy iPhones for the same reason. My best friend is totally anti-tech, raises her kids with almost no screen-time, has no social media, that kind of thing, but has an iPhone (the most expensive option available) despite using her phone purely for browsing the internet, whatsapp, and callls. The occasional photo. I asked her why she spent so much money on the phone when a much cheaper model will do the same things, and she just shrugs and says it does what she wants, so why not?

And like I said before, people who have plenty of spare cash are free to spend it how they want, but from a marketing perspective, it is interesting to see that so many people will go with one of the most expensive—if not the most expensive—options on the market "just because it does what I need it to do", without researching any other options.

It's sometimes like Apple has just become the default go-to choice, despite it actually being a top-end, luxury brand. That is not the case in almost any other market. You don't get people spending 100k on a Mercedes every time they need a new car just because it's a nice drive and does everything they require of a car, for example.

MeetOnTheledge · 02/02/2019 12:35

I've never encountered anyone in real life with such strong opinions on other peoples phones, but it seems as though nearly all the snobbery on this thread is against Apple not for it.

I'm on my third Iphone over about ten years, never had a cracked screen, battery life issue on one at 4 years old was easily and cheaply resolved, I keep autocorrect switched off so no problems with forced correction. It does everything I want it to easily and efficiently. I never refer to it as "my Iphone".

caughtinanet · 02/02/2019 12:37

Even as a non apple user I know the charging leads keep changing, I can think of 3 different ones my DC has had for different iPhones while all other devices in the house can be charged using leads that havent changed for about a decade.

VanGoghsDog · 02/02/2019 12:43

The lightening charger is great - it doesn't have a lright way up".

Neither does USB C, which is what my current and previous phone uses, and most Android phones now.

My nephew asked for an iPhone charger for Christmas because his keep breaking. As a non Apple user even I have three different types of Apple charger in the house from previous devices.

VanGoghsDog · 02/02/2019 12:48

I was pointing out where you were wrong about the things you claim you can't do on an iPhone.

I wasn't wrong. I said you couldn't do it in the same keyboard. And you can't. You have to use a different keyboard which is accessed by holding down one button, which shows the mini keyboard, and then sliding to what you want. On my phone, it's all on the one keyboard.

I admit I'm rubbish at typing on soft keyboards (partly due to my terrible eyesight), so shoot me, but I'm happy to go back and correct. My issue is that with the iPhone you can't do that on emails.

It's you who's getting arsey by the way. Why are you so invested in iPhone that you can't accept there are a few things they can't do?

grenadezombie · 02/02/2019 12:50

Can you share this information with us?

grenadezombie · 02/02/2019 12:50

So explain why ever single ipone my dh has had over the last few years all have different charger ports then?

Perhaps you have your brands mixed up 🤷🏻‍♀️

HarrySnotter · 02/02/2019 12:51

Still no one can tell me what I can't do on my iPhone...

Think for yourself? 😂.

It's a joke by the way, before anyone tries to hunt me down and run me out of MN with pitchforks!

DameSquashalot · 02/02/2019 12:52

Apple do change the chargers, but not with every model

katiescarlett1939 · 02/02/2019 12:52

@JacksonPillock some valid points! Apple's marketing is effective and interesting.

I will say, though, that I have never (and will never) buy the latest model. I normally have 3 editions before the latest, once the price has dropped and I get a good deal for what I find to be good phones Smile. Stuff like the latest whizzy camera doesn't interest me.

VanGoghsDog · 02/02/2019 12:53

in nearly 12 years of straight usage nothing has ever made me think damn, why can't I do that?

Every time I get a new phone (except the three times I've been forced to use an iPhone through work. My last company developed, sold and supported a mobile phone os and a mobile device manager, all Android, nothing for iPhone, yet STILL the company phones were iPhones) it's had some new thing I love and never knew existed but never with the previous phone had I wondered why it didn't do it.

I suppose that just shows the limits of my imagination vs those who design phones.

VanGoghsDog · 02/02/2019 12:57

@katiescarlett1939

I'm usually one model behind, I buy the old model when the new one comes out. I also don't care about cameras. Oh, and no Samsung snobbery from me. My first ever company mobile was a Samsung in 1999 before anyone had heard of iPhones, but I've never had one since.

SwimmingJustKeepSwimming · 02/02/2019 12:57

Jackson Pollack. Exactly. Its an amazing feat that Apple have accomplished . Wher else are people proud of spending way more than they need to to "just do the job." Or to "just work."

grenadezombie · 02/02/2019 13:00

My first ever company mobile was a Samsung in 1999 before anyone had heard of iPhones, but I've never had one since.

Not sure I get your point here. Apple were a company back then too. They didn't sell smartphones, but neither did Samsung.

Schmoobarb · 02/02/2019 13:00

I’ve had iPhones since the iPhone 4 and there was a different charger for the iPhone 5 but it’s been the same one since. The charger cables are shit though and even when they look fine seem to randomly periodically stop working.

katiescarlett1939 · 02/02/2019 13:00

Yes @VanGoghsDog it's a good strategy. It's not justifiable for me to buy the (in my opinion, overpriced) current model.

Another benefit I've personally found is that when we upgrade, DH and I can pass on our old
phones to the children (because kids nowadays have to have iPhones or they apparently become social pariahs Grin).

Scandaloso · 02/02/2019 13:03

Its an amazing feat that Apple have accomplished . Wher else are people proud of spending way more than they need to to "just do the job." Or to "just work."

Um, in loads of instances. This is the accomplishment of most big brands. Why do people wear Nike to pootle about in when non branded trainers from Primark will do the job just as well?

JacksonPillock · 02/02/2019 13:06

Um, in loads of instances. This is the accomplishment of most big brands. Why do people wear Nike to pootle about in when non branded trainers from Primark will do the job just as well?

This is true. I think the difference, in my experience at least, is that people who would never buy Nike shoes and are frugal enough to look for and buy cheaper non-brand shoes still buy iPhones.

Redglitter · 02/02/2019 13:06

It’s just that for a lot people, once you’ve had an I phone, anything else just doesn’t match up

Replace the word iphone in that sentence for Samsung and its equally true Grin
