Names that wouldn't usually be names

MIL was telling me about a science teacher some decades ago who named her daughter Antimony. I thought this was incredible, and got thinking about other words that could be used as unexpected names.

What do you think could be carried off as a name? In the same elemental theme, I suspect Cobalt has been a boy's name somewhere...

MIL used to travel quite a lot when our DC were little and she used to bring back all sorts of gifts.

When DD was about 3, MIL brought back a beautiful traditionally dressed doll from Japan. When we unwrapped it, I said to DD " oh look it's a Japanese doll'.

DD said solemnly " oh no, Ajapanny must be very sad because I've got her dolly"

I don't think it would make a very good name though!

There’s a Netflix series where the protagonist is called Light Turner. I quite like it Smile

I met a Thai family a few years back whose two boys' names were Thai names (I can't remember what) but the English translations were Boy and World.

As a kid, when playing make-believe, I would always call myself Viennetta.

We have a baby Roar near us. Along the same theme I'd have Caw and Bray for boys and Mew for a girl.

Does he have another one called Crocus?

Pilcrow · 17/01/2019 20:39

TallulahBetty the Elizabethan composer William Byrd wrote a partsong called Though Amaryllis Dance in Green in 1597. But it's from Ancient Greece - so much older than that anyway, and definitely a name!

dd has called one of her Dungeons&Dragons Online characters Agastache, which is a genus in the mint family. She picked it up from a seed catalogue that was lying around when she was making that character. There is (or was, haven't seen it for a while) a Mumsnetter with that name too.

WhereTheFuckIsMyFuckingCoat · 17/01/2019 20:47
