Names that wouldn't usually be names

MIL was telling me about a science teacher some decades ago who named her daughter Antimony. I thought this was incredible, and got thinking about other words that could be used as unexpected names.

What do you think could be carried off as a name? In the same elemental theme, I suspect Cobalt has been a boy's name somewhere...

Brick is a strong first name for a man. Brick would be a film star.

nocoolnamesleft · 16/01/2019 23:25

Malaena is the black, sticky, tarry, foul smelling poo you get after a gut bleed. Unfortunately, I have also come across it used as a girl's name...

Bloodybridget · 16/01/2019 23:29

Delrosa, it was a brand name for rose hip syrup when I was young.

GoldilocksAndTheThreePears · 16/01/2019 23:29

Mia Farrow and Woody Allen had a son they called Satchel, but I believe he calls himself Ronan these days.

Someone I used to know yearned as a child to be named Vaseline Grin She thought it was a wonderful name.

On a similar theme, Clinique would be quite good for a girl. Like Monique but with better skin.

BringOnTheScience · 16/01/2019 23:37

Muesli and Placenta would be lovely little girls.

PippilottaLongstocking · 16/01/2019 23:41

I like herb names. I’ve met a Basil, Tarragon, Bay, Saffron, and multiple Rosemarys in real life.

I also like paint colour names, like in the Casson Family books (Indigo, Cadmium Gold, Saffron, Permanent Rose)

And plant names
Comfrey
Calendula
Clematis
Dandelion
Tulip

I also think Alimony would be a nice name

Birdsgottafly · 17/01/2019 00:05

"A friend tells the story of her former midwife mum, who asked a teenage mum what she was going to call her new daughter."

Yea, that didn't happen.

"Malaena", it's an old Greek name. There's lots of cultures that use names that now translate into something else.

I do know someone who wanted to call their DD, Saluki (Grey hound breed), but wasn't allowed to.

My DDs NN, at times, was pestilence, which I think makes a good name.

Brick is a character in US sitcom “The Middle”.
There’s a book series by Grace Dent, “Diary of a Chav”, where the main character and her siblings have alcohol-related names. Her name is Shiraz (middle name Bailey), her older sister is Cava-Sue and brother is Murphy.
