Names that wouldn't usually be names

MIL was telling me about a science teacher some decades ago who named her daughter Antimony. I thought this was incredible, and got thinking about other words that could be used as unexpected names.

What do you think could be carried off as a name? In the same elemental theme, I suspect Cobalt has been a boy's name somewhere...

There’s a reality show in the US about a family with a set of sextuplets. Some of those names are the most ridiculous I’ve ever heard. Like “why on earth would you saddle your children with such weird names” ridiculous.

penelopepig · 17/01/2019 02:56

I play this game sometimes with my friends, horrible or weird words that would make great names if they had different meanings.

My faves are Violence, Syphilis and Table.

Doona and Eskie - sort of an Australian picnic

Forgot to mention I once knew a boy called Stone, which I really like.
On the subject of names that could be names, I wrote a lot of amateur stories from about 8 to 13 and invented some pretty crazy names:
Voo (boy)
Wire (boy)
Mystery (girl)
Million (girl)
Perriantha (girl)
Levina (girl)
Tide (girl)
Blue (girl) (but think I've heard of one since then)

I live in Saudi and always think Jeddah would be quite a pretty name. Friends of ours named their daughter Adliya after a stint they did in Bahrain.

My mum won the Australian name game once and for all by suggesting Margarine......

I quite like Alsatian. Not sure if it's for a girl or boy though. Maybe it could be unisex?

WhentheRabbitsWentWild · 17/01/2019 06:53

Not one for place names but I heard a child called Zenor (I believe its a place in Cornwall) once , being called by her friend . I quite like it to be honest .
Another place name I like is Avimore.

Names that wouldn't usually be names (in the 70s or 80s say) were surnames then but used as forenames a lot more now
Harrison
Mason
Taylor
Etc

BikeRunSki · 17/01/2019 07:11

I once taught a girl called Song.

JuneFromBethesda · 17/01/2019 07:36

Sachet for a girl

Or an alternative spelling (for the Strictly fans) Sashay Grin

BertrandRussell · 17/01/2019 07:42

Surely it should be Sachette for a girl? Sachet is a boy’s name....

CoolCarrie · 17/01/2019 08:03

Halcyon, Sonnet, Elysium, Siam, Deco and Aquitaine all would be cool names

Giggorata · 17/01/2019 08:14

Chalice, Patella, Pica, Soya or Fascia for a girl.

Burly, Canton, Merit, Tenor or Pattern for a boy.

Pilcrow · 17/01/2019 09:34

I know a Chalis (pronounced Chalice) and I've taught a Jolly (she was!)

I hope Glory doesn't take her DH's surname Hole (I did know someone whose surname was Hole)!
Birdie use to be common in Ireland, nickname for Bridget I think.
I know a Giverny after Monet's garden, quite pretty I think. One of DD's friends wants to name a daughter Samphire Shock

When I was a little girl and the old counties were still extant I always fancied Merioneth as a name. Merry for short?

A friend named his daughter Nova and I believe one of the Olympic rowers has a son called Croyde, like the place in Cornwall. Or might be Devon.

We have a Zephyr at school. Lovely lad... We've got some other properly bonkers names going on too; on the whole they're great children, though!
