Bake off - Kim joy

Just catching up, I'm watching bread week. Kim joy seems a lovely woman with her own style. She has a perfectly pleasant face....why don't her friends tell her her make up is so overkill! Bright blue eye shadow and that blusher! She looks so silly and she could look so much nicer without it all. IMHO obviously...

OP posts:

To you
Not to the majority of this thread

CiderBrains · 04/10/2018 17:16

I'm not a fan of the big eyebrow trend but it's no different to bashing those who do have the big eyebrow look as people have said on this thread.

CiderBrains · 04/10/2018 17:20

And I bet if Sandra from sales came into work with make up like that people wouldn't be so kind. It's only because Kim joy is quirky looking before make up that people feel sorry her.

Like I say, if Kim Kardashian had that make up she wouldn't have the majority on her side. Lady gaga experiments with looks and gets bashed as does Christina Aguilera.

itssquidstella · 04/10/2018 17:22

You're being unnecessarily judgmental, OP. That said, I do find her deliberate quirkiness a bit try-hard. I'm trying to like her but she grated on me.

ShatnersBassoon · 04/10/2018 17:24

I don't feel sorry for her Confused. And she isn't "quirky looking before". Nobody feels sorry for Noel Fielding either. People admire their style because it seems to be a true and interesting reflection of them.

CiderBrains · 04/10/2018 17:26

Oh please, if ruby wore that make up she wouldn't get the support! So yes, it is because she's quirky looking before make up so people embrace it more with a hint of pity.

MarshaBradyo · 04/10/2018 17:26

I don’t feel sorry for her

I’m glad there are people around that do things differently and don’t feel pressured to conform

Plus it suits her

ResistanceIsNecessary · 04/10/2018 17:30

I must've missed the part where the producers outlined the the Bake Off pre-requisites of conforming to appearance and make-up trends.

Oh no, wait. It's a baking competition, not a fashion show.

Drawing comparisons between Kim-Joy and Kim Kardashian are bloody ridiculous. One holds up every fart and sneeze of her life to monetise it and positions herself as a style icon in order to sell her products - which include make-up. The other is an ordinary woman who has joined a bunch of other ordinary people to participate in a show about baking.

CiderBrains · 04/10/2018 17:30

Remember Candice before with her lipstick! How much bashing she got! The lipstick suited her but it was too much for people and she got comments. She was very pretty though so people are allowed to comment on her! Grin

ShatnersBassoon · 04/10/2018 17:31

She isn't quirky looking, she has a quirky character. Ruby doesn't seem to have an unusual personality or interests, so wearing unusual clothes and make up would be at odds with her character.

Or are you saying that only ugly people are admired for eccentricities because they're pitied for having nothing else going for them, and that you think Kim-Joy is uglier than Ruby? Surely not! But it does read that way.

CiderBrains · 04/10/2018 17:32

Ruby is far prettier than Kim joy. Much more natural.

StateofIndependance · 04/10/2018 17:33

Her makeup is great. It's applied well. Make up doesn't just have to be about making lips redder or cheeks rosier in order to conform more closely to a beauty ideal. What Kim-Joy does is far more interesting.

brimfull · 04/10/2018 17:36

Kim joy is utterly charming as is her image .
OP , you need to accept that people outside the norm enrich this world and judgmental mean opinions like yours do not.

QuantumGroan · 04/10/2018 17:37

There will always be people who struggle to appreciate anything that goes beyond the ordinary.

ResistanceIsNecessary · 04/10/2018 17:38

I remain baffled as the relevance of whether someone is "pretty" or not, to a baking competition.

Personally I watch the show because I like seeing what they make. Not to see who has applied make-up according to the prevailing trends.

SoutineBellhop · 04/10/2018 17:47

I assure you I don’t feel sorry for Kim Joy. Quite apart from the fact that she bakes like a dream, and manages to remain calm, preternaturally chilled and cheerful in a boiling tent, with a camera recording her every twitch and Paul Hollywood oozing around like a permatanned King Herod, she radiates contentment and is visibly at ease with herself.

If I made it as far as the filmed auditions, I’d have been slung out in about thirty seconds for sniping about air con and the camera operator looking at me and PH just breathing. I admire anyone who can deal pleasantly with that, while producing biscuit chandeliers.

CiderBrains · 04/10/2018 17:48

I love people such as Lady Gaga and Christina Aguilera for their style and make up which goes way beyond the norm! And I loved Candice for her lipstick! Just because one can't get on board with Kim joy doesn't mean they don't appreciate anything beyond the norm..

Slapbetcommissioner · 04/10/2018 17:57

I googled her (I don't watch GBBO) expecting to see Ronald McDonald's sister or something, she looks lovely, her makeup suits her and she looks like a really happy and friendly person.

raspberrycordial · 04/10/2018 18:25

I think she's just gorgeous, her makeup isn't my style at all but it suits her and in a world where so many people have no confidence to do what they want, I think it's lovely that she does.

Gilead · 04/10/2018 18:31

I adore her and hate seeing women being unsupportive of other women. Mind you I’m sixty and wear purple lipstick!

girlandboy · 04/10/2018 18:39

She had the most amazing orange eye shadow on the other day, it was so skilfully blended.
I'd far rather look at Kim-Joy's make up than all these stupid drawn on eyebrows you see everywhere.

LavendarGreen · 04/10/2018 19:07

Kim Joy is very sweet and cute. I like her. Loved her space turtles too.

Same here. I admire the way she can pull it off. I couldn't!

Yeah, comparing the 2 is ridiculous. In fact, it's silly to compare Kim-Joy with anyone else. She is her own person.

YeTalkShiteHen · 04/10/2018 19:25

Gilead you sound like my kind of person! Grin (I wear red lippy instead, purple doesn’t do me any favours)
