Inspired by a thread about hygiene - carpets in kitchens and toilets, I thought it could be interesting to recall some of the diabolical tat from the past.

OMG - Shield soap! I had a very intense relationship in my last few months at university, with a guy who used that soap. It was a very one-sided relationship, and I knew when we left I'd never see him again. I used to buy Shield just to remind me of him.

And also I give you this picture - a camera that I had growing up. I was gutted to see it in a museum recently. Confirming that I am, indeed, an old git Grin

The other thing that I had, probably around 1973-4, which was really the height of fashion, was a pair of loons. Really tight trousers to the knee, then a massive flare, but the flare part was made from a different coloured fabric. I can't seem to find a picture of them though.

Vitalogy · 18/08/2018 18:34

You Superman then. Smile

TornFromTheInside · 18/08/2018 18:35

Speaking of cameras - remember these? they were 'slimline' and some of them stretched in order to use them...

No Vitalogy, I can't wear lycra, it pinches my hairy legs and the little label at the back of my leotard keeps tickling my arse, so I end up walking in a funny way.
I won't even begin to mention what the heavy seam at the crotch does to my wotnots.
Needless to say, I'm not cut out for the job!

BIWI I remember loons! You could buy them via the back pages of the Disco 45 magazine. Or you could make your own by cutting up the side seams of your already massive bell bottoms and inserting a V shaped piece of contrasting fabric.

FrankiesKnuckle · 18/08/2018 18:41

I give you this.

And these (loved blakeys on my shoes, felt so grown up clip clopping around)

Shampaincharly · 18/08/2018 18:44

That camera was my 18th Birthday present !

BIWI · 18/08/2018 18:44

@thenightsky - but it wasn't just the piece that you inserted - it was the whole of the bottom of the leg! And it was always an inverted triangle.

IllHaveALargeGlassOfRed · 18/08/2018 18:46

They were a unisex jacket. And they came in a few colour combos:

Blue with a light grey collar
Light grey/blue
Burgundy/grey
Grey/burgundy

Whatever colour the collar was I think that was the colour inside the coat. Maybe it were reversible?

The collar was a deep v-neck and the jacket was a stud type fastener.

The jacket itself was hip length. Material - and I get laughed at for this description but I have no other way if describing it! - is jacket material! Not leather, not plastic, not wool, not linen, just.... jacket material. Cotton I suppose?

Work with me people - that's all I can tell you! 😀

They cost about a tenner.

larry55 · 18/08/2018 18:46

You are all beginning to worry me as I have over the years owned most of these things. Admittedly I did get married in 1972 so a lot of them were very fashionable. I hope I didn't embarrass my dc too much.

IllHaveALargeGlassOfRed · 18/08/2018 18:47

@FrankiesKnuckle - we called them segs.

But they made your shoes skitey.

poppym12 · 18/08/2018 18:52

My aunt had one of these. Kept me amused for minutes ages.

Those drink trolleys are really in. What's wrong with them?

TornFromTheInside · 18/08/2018 19:01

I remember my mother having fibreglass curtains, I wonder now if these were actually detrimental to health.

PenelopeShitStop · 18/08/2018 19:17

Glassofred just let it go. It's not happening. I'm sorry.

Vitalogy · 18/08/2018 19:28

Did anyone used to shrink crisp packets in the oven to make keyrings?
