Inspired by a thread about hygiene - carpets in kitchens and toilets, I thought it could be interesting to recall some of the diabolical tat from the past.

The deer was Babycham.

Pear cider or perry.

Now available for manly men to drink as well under a variety of brands.

@GetoutofthatGarden @Isawthelight (whatever your name is 😀) and @Shampaincharly (as a fellow Dundonian - you're bound to remember the smoothy jacket!)

They were definitely cheap - Lorne St Market and the Market Hall in the Wellgate sold them. I'm not sure about calling them a cagoule - that implies they were like a raincoat?

God knows why they were called smoothie/smoothy jackets. Maybe that's what I called them?

I wish I could find a picture.....

IllHaveALargeGlassOfRed · 18/08/2018 17:16

Ah @Shampaincharly - that's a proper scrap! 😀

IllHaveALargeGlassOfRed · 18/08/2018 17:17

Thanks @TornFromTheInside ❤️

As for you, you'll do better next time 😉

Peartree17 · 18/08/2018 17:19

Has anyone mentioned horse brasses on leather straps? My mother hung them on the wall. We're not equestrian folk, so god knows why.

Shampaincharly · 18/08/2018 17:32

Was it a Harrington jacket? @ IllHaveALargeGlassOfRed

Shampaincharly · 18/08/2018 17:35

@*IllHaveALargeGlassOf
Red , Harrington jacket .

TornFromTheInside · 18/08/2018 17:39

What am I supposed to do better at?

(do not dare post a huge list!... I already know of a hundred failings!)

Definitely not a Harrington Shamp - they were for BOYS!

I'm going to keep looking.....

IllHaveALargeGlassOfRed · 18/08/2018 17:44

Oh Torn, if you have to ask sweetie...

TornFromTheInside · 18/08/2018 17:53

I've had to go back and check...

NOW I know what you meant!
I'm not saying another word.

Ok . I was never fashionable.

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 18/08/2018 18:05

Yes, Torn, not a speck of child to be seen. It still couldn't tackle the pine needles in the shag pile though.

Shampaincharly · 18/08/2018 18:09

The smoothie jacket: did it have a soft material tie belt ?

TornFromTheInside · 18/08/2018 18:10

I think someone likes saying 'shag pile'!

Can you actually still get those carpets? I had a faux posh aunt who always had white, or light coloured ones - her house was lovely but very 1970's mirrors and chrome etc Always had her hair in a bun or beehive thing and wore fur coats. Smokes with a long filter etc etc.

Common as much really, but pulled off the look very well.

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 18/08/2018 18:14

Shag pile. Shag pile. Shag. Pile.

IllHaveALargeGlassOfRed · 18/08/2018 18:14

No Shamp, it had an elasticated waist.

I'm beginning to think they only exist in my mind 🤨

But I had one! It was light grey with a contrasting blue colour.

TornFromTheInside · 18/08/2018 18:15

I think I know what jacket is being talked about here - but someone's distracting me...

Vitalogy · 18/08/2018 18:15

Definitely not a Harrington Shamp - they were for BOYS! The girls at our school had Harrington's. We had our names on the back as well. I had a rabbits foot too.

TornFromTheInside · 18/08/2018 18:17

Are we talking about a blouson type jacket?

OP posts:
TornFromTheInside · 18/08/2018 18:18

like this?

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 18/08/2018 18:19

Shag. Pile.

TornFromTheInside · 18/08/2018 18:21

Here's my carpet sweeper which I still use, it's handy to clear up a few nail clippings bits, saves getting the big hoover out.

Seriously tacky and grim...
TornFromTheInside · 18/08/2018 18:28

Here is what I use to sweep up clippings - they are like steel!
