My sibling is a celebrity AMA

I won’t be saying who they are.

I recently spoke to a friend about it who
had lots of questions which lead to an interesting conversation, things I’d never said or thought about before.

When I was younger I used to feel incredibly jealous of them and had a very short and unsuccessful attempt at creating my own fame.

Now I’m older with my own dc and have seen the effects up close I definitely think the negatives out way the positives and it’s not something I would ever want for my children.

Still have not mentioned to them that you started the thread and have spent last two days talking to Mumsnet at length about them?

Do they have any famous friends or colleagues you absolutely can't stand? CFs, famous edition 😂

Obviously you can't name names, but is there anyone so unlike their public image you think "ooh, if only you knew!" every time their name comes up in conversation?

There’s definitely people I don't like and have seen or heard real nastiness from but who the general public seem to really like, obviously I have to bite my tongue. Ive found it’s often the people who always come across as lovely on tv that aren’t so off camera and that the ones that seem a bit grumpy or rude on tv who are also playing a part and are actually much nicer in real life.

How is this impacting your life? What will it change for your if OP says she has told them about it? If OPs sibling is looking at the thread, do you think they’ll be saying ‘oh gosh sibling, random stranger is really upset you won’t say who I am and spill the beans, best hop to it’ or ‘how dare you, you are banished from my life forever’.

If this has been needling you for two days, you either lived a very charmed life or a very sad one.

Thanks for the thread it's very interesting.

Do you share the same surname?

Has anyone that didn't know you are related ever guessed that he/she is your sibling because you look similar or have similar personality characteristics?

Yes, a few people have asked before. I don’t know if they were guessing from name, appearance or personality.
I think name plays a big part though, I know someone with the surname Pitt who is always asked if they’re related to Brad Pitt despite being a different ethnicity.

Assuming it's you Sophie, (and not someone who's bored) I personally am disgusted that you enable your sibling.

JollyCoralSeal · 17/08/2026 14:44

In what ways do you think your own life would be different if you did not have a celebrity sibling? ‘Better’ or ‘worse’ or just different (or exactly the same)?

Calliopespa · 17/08/2026 14:49

Obviously the possible earning potential is a positive and then there is often more freedom, variety and downtime than working a normal 9-5.

They’ve had lots of fun, gone to lots of places, met lots people, achieved many things and experienced things most people dream of. They also do just get a real buzz from the attention and excitement.

Your last line is a really interesting point: I think some people really do just thrive on that.

You are either that type of person or you are not I think.

Which brings me to an interesting thought: do you feel your sibling always had this drive to be noticed from the start, always got attention even as a child, OR do you feel that at some level they craved it because they felt it was lacking?

I have known a handful of people who crave the limelight, and ime it has been a strange mix of those two things: they have tended to be quite centre of attention in the family home but not necessarily outside it. It's as if they were determined to make the world treat them the way their family did.

Would you say that was true of your sibling?

JollyCoralSeal · 17/08/2026 14:51

Is there anything you wish the general public knew about what it is like to have a celebrity sibling?

Scandalicious · 17/08/2026 15:24

When it comes to public perception versus reality, do you think your sibling is nicer, more mentally stable, cleverer, kinder etc or vice versa

A few years ago I worked with a woman who is a similar age to me, and it turned out that her older sister is a TV presenter and sort of lifestyle influencer (bit a big age gap, so not like your situation ). Food, interior design, all stuff adjacent to that. We hang out a little bit socially as well for a while, but we're not in contact now, and I work in a different area today anyway.

For the record, the sister is really nice. I have a lot of time for her, and she's genuinely great at what she does.

I met her big sister a few times. And oh my god, I've never met anyone so vapid, bitchy and grasping. A real superiority complex, but for no good reason really because she's sort of bang average. Her whole schtick is about being relatable yet cool, but it's a total veneer. The person she appears to be online and in the media is nothing like the person I encountered in real life.

She used to form a double act with another TV presenter / podcaster woman who is, I gather, quite nice, down to earth and genuine (I've heard from a few trusted sources) . Then they had a HUGE falling out over money and their enterprise all fell apart. But they said nothing, so lots of people were left wondering, what happened to those two who were everywhere between 2014 and 2018 (or whenever it was, can't quite remember now).

I also met another woman once who was an influencer and shared a manager with them, and had gone on the same press tour as them. She told me she thought they were basically an industry plant - a collaboration designed to further their own visibility rather than something that had happened organically. She described the horrible one as an emotional vampire, whereas the other, apparently, would just sit back and watch her show off.

Said presenter/ influencer also has a very successful husband in a creative field who is extremely well regarded and respected. I do sometimes wonder whether he helps her out and pushes her career, perhaps indirectly. He must know a lot of big names. I've met him a couple of times too, and he seemed nice enough, pretty sound, actually.

By now it's probably fairly obvious who I'm talking about. Oh well, may as well go for broke...

Perhaps the most annoying thing has to be that she's a "professional Northerner" (no one cares) - but yet lives... in London.

AgnethaF · 17/08/2026 15:49

I’m not really the instagram follower type.

however there is a celebrity that I do follow because we holidayed at the same property a few years ago (not at same time), which piqued my interest in her.

She comes across as very nice, but I have noticed over past few years that her whole lifestyle seems to be paid-for ads for everything.

every holiday (numerous and extremely regular) is tagged.

her bikinis, hot tub, wallpaper, garden planting, everything is basically an advert.

good for her, but she does put up lots of pics of her children, which I think is a bad call.

also, she is very attractive, and some men make really creepy comments, which gives me the ick.

Q to @zedtree - does this happen to your sibling too? Do they worry that creepy blokes could be ogling them (and their children) in swimwear etc. also lots of foot fetish comments 🤮. I won’t name her, Definitely not Katie Price!

I’m trying to think of “professional Northerners” and no one I can think of fits the bill!

Not interested in who it is, so have only read the OP's posts (in which OP helpfully quotes the questions).

I would like to know: did your sibling enter their line of work because they really wanted to do that particular job, or because they wanted to be famous/ rich?

Is it possible to do the job(s) they have done and NOT be famous?

Do they have a special talent, did they work super hard, were they lucky, or a combination of those?

Thank you.

Bit of both, they wanted and enjoyed the job but also liked the idea of the fame and riches that could potentially come with it.

Not completely and not at for some of the things they’ve done, attention and exposure naturally comes with it.

Combination, they were good at what they were doing and they worked hard but they were also lucky.

Have you got drunk/ used 'celebrity substances ' ( sz) with them? And if so how was it?

Did you have to look out for them and be a 'minder' when they drank etc or could you have fun together

What are your honest thoughts about her kids dad's? You say she's been betrayed a lot did u see any red flags ?

Is there any optertunities through your sibling you'd wish you'd have taken up - some people with contacts get into the industry by being behind the scenes, like doing make up or styling that leads to a professional career within wider industry- Did you ever get close to doing something like that?

Is there any parts of your life or development that feels like you would have explored differently if not for this connection?

Do you worry on their behalf about money and how they can support their kids / self if money dries up?

Has anyone In your family spoke to your sibling about money management/ investing at any point when it was apparent they'd made a lot?

Been betrayed a lot ...my arse. She's not exactly monogamous herself....

Why do you stick up for her when you know what she's actually Iike FFS.

It's interesting that they became famous and then did reality TV - I think becoming famous because of reality TV must really be difficult for all around.

Do you think this way gave you all time to adapt?

Yes because their fame happened more slowly and we had time to get used to and accept seeing and hearing them out there and then hearing the headlines / public reactions etc.
I’ve heard lots of stories of the families of contestants on some of the more modern reality tv shows and actually the contestants themselves really struggling because their fame happened so quick and unnaturally.

If they are posted about in a negative way, is it true? I often find myself wondering how much of the negative gossip stories about celebrities are actually true, and, if they are true, how much of an effect they have on that person. Is “there’s no such thing as negative publicity” actually a thing, or does it get to them?

Sometimes but it will always be exaggerated to make it more interesting, sometimes it’s complete crap.
There’s a lot on many celebs printed that isn’t true or fair and then there’s a lot that definitely is true (good and bad) that isn’t printed for a variety of reasons. I take every sensational headline on anyone with a pinch of salt.

To some people it’s definitely a thing, it depends what kind of image you’re relying on, It’s impossible to be a celebrity and never be criticised though even if it’s just from lies and jealousy.
If someone’s reading or watching something you’ve done they’re adding to the viewing figures and sales either way so it doesn’t really matter at first if they’re doing it because they like you or not.
Negatively also seems to sell more, there’s often more clicks and comments on a controversial headline or post than there is on a positive one in any platform including Mumsnet.

My sibling accepts it part of the job but obviously things get to them.
