What Mumsnet users say

"White Company - expensive but last for ages. Husband wears his all the time" (Recommended by Mumsnet user Frazzled2207)

Our verdict

Our favourite features? This luxury dressing gown is beautifully cut and offers amazing quality from a brand that Mumsnetters rave about across the forums.

The White Company’s unisex hooded robe is made from the brand's innovative ‘Hydrocotton’ material which is produced in a way that makes it thicker and softer to the touch than regular cotton.

It's also moisture-wicking so it's perfect to wrap up in after a bath or shower and it's quick-drying to boot.

What’s the best material for a dressing gown?

For bathrobes, look for something that can withstand regular washing and tumble drying - all the robes on our list can be machine washed and tumble dried. Fleecy finishes will almost always be made from man-made fibres, but will offer softness and warmth, although restoring fluffiness post-laundering might require a tumble dryer blast.

How should a dressing gown fit?

Dressing gowns and bathrobes should be comfortable to wear. Check they're big enough for lounging in (sitting, reclining) without gaping at the front or riding up the back, and that there is enough fabric to offer a good ‘wrap’ around the body. Test belts and sleeves for length, too, and if there is a hood, make sure it is actually functional if you want to use it to absorb moisture from your hair after a bath or shower.

Is there a difference between a dressing gown and a bathrobe?

Traditionally, a bathrobe is for slipping on a damp body after a bath or shower, while a dressing gown is for wearing over pyjamas to preserve modesty and provide warmth around the house. But both can be used in the same way. Just figure out the fabric and style that works best for what you intend to wear it for.

What is the best men's dressing gown to buy?

We plumped for the super-soft Savile Row fleece dressing gown, because it has so many colour options, including patterns like tartan. It's also very keenly priced, and comes with some great reviews for quality and fit.

How we chose our recommendations

Because we know that there’s nothing like a real recommendation from a real parent, we first headed to the Mumsnet forums to find out what type of men’s dressing gowns Mumsnet users had bought. We checked out the types they recommended for being warm, washed well, comfy, and well-priced. We then did some research across the wider web, looking at which dressing gowns and bathrobes had won accolades or been featured in ‘best buy’ lists across websites and print media, and what customer reviews said about them.

Having collated all that information, we picked the top 10 dressing gowns and robes we thought would make the best buys.
