The 11 best blanket hoodies to keep you warm and save money

Wrap yourself in warmth and comfort with the best blanket hoodie. We've scoured the UK market and chosen the 11 best oversized hoodies that combine cosiness and style.

By Lucy Cotterill | Last updated Feb 21, 2023

Woman wearing a blanket hoodie

With rising energy costs and continued uncertainty surrounding the increased cost of living, many of us are seeking alternative ways to stay warm this winter. Enter the wearable blanket, a.k.a. the blanket hoodie. Mumsnetters have been going crazy for blanket hoodies this winter, with many praising them for their excessive warmth which, like other practical options such as the best draught excluders, reduces the need to have the heating on all the time. Designed to envelope the wearer with warmth (just like the best heated throws but without electricity) your best blanket hoodie may not be the most stylish item in your wardrobe, but in terms of cosiness it's unbeatable.

From boxset binges to chilly work-from-home days and even chilly beach or camping trips, the best blanket hoodie is a year-round essential - but has seen a huge surge in popularity over recent months thanks to raised gas and energy costs, meaning there are now more blanket hoodies than ever to choose from. Whilst Oodie is probably the most well-known and best-rated blanket hoodie, not everyone’s budget can stretch that far. Fear not – we’ve researched a wide range of Oodie alternatives and included blanket hoodies suitable for every budget. (We've also conducted an extensive Mumsnet Review of The Oodie to see if it lives up to all the hype)

Whether you’re looking for a super warm and cosy hooded blanket, something a little lighter which can be worn under your best winter coat, one of the best kids' blanket hoodies or a patterned option where the whole family can wear the same design, we’ve done the research to bring you a snuggly selection of best buys, collating consumer reviews as well as recommendations from our huge resource of Mumsnet users – the largest online network of UK parents. We've also conducted extensive reviews of our own, including for our top-rated product, the Sienna. Read more here: Sienna Blanket Hoodie Review.

Here are the 11 best blanket hoodies UK 2023.

1. Best overall hooded blanket: Sienna Hoodie Blanket Oversized Ultra Soft Sherpa Fleece

Sienna blanket hoodie

Price on writing: From £13 | Buy now from Amazon

Key specs

Size: 72" waist, 34" body, 36" arms | Colours: grey, pink, black, burgundy, natural, navy, sea blue, silver | Material: microfibre, polyester, Sherpa fleece

What we love

  • Cheaper alternative to the Oodie
  • Good range of colours
  • Useful front pocket

What to know

  • Some reviewers say it can shed fluff
  • No patterned designs

What Mumsnet users say

"I’ve got a Sienna. Absolutely love it." (Tried and tested by Mumsnet user Dinosaur19)

"Another vote for the Sienna, I ordered one to check the quality and we now have four in the house!" (Recommended by Mumsnet user blibblibs)

Our verdict

Perfect for cosy nights in, the Sienna Sherpa Hooded Blanket is an affordable oversized hooded blanket that comes in a generous one-size-fits-all. Ideal for packing up and taking with you to outdoor events, festivals or camping, it’s sure to keep you warm when the temperatures dip. Be sure to check out the new Sienna Extra Long Oversized Blanket Hoodie for an even bigger, snugglier version of this best buy.

Featuring a soft-touch outer fabric and luxurious Sherpa lining, this blanket hoodie is available in an array of versatile colours from black and grey to blush pink and silver. It has elastic cuffs and a double-opening front pocket. Even better, it’s machine washable at 30 degrees, making it quick and easy to clean when you can be convinced, somewhat reluctantly, to take it off.

Mumsnet user Beetr00t, who has tried both the Sienna and the Oodie, said: “Both are great. The Oodie is thicker and softer, but the Sienna is just as nice.” Given that many of us are watching the pennies more this winter, that's ideal as it comes at a fraction of the price. Reviewers agreed, saying it was still a warm and comfortable alternative, without the high price tag.

It’s worth noting that the Sienna Hoodie Blanket may shed some fluff or fibres during the first few uses and doesn’t come in patterned designs – so if you’re keen on licensed or fun themes for your blankets, you’ll need to look elsewhere. Pair with one of the best electric blankets on the chilliest days/nights for the ultimate cosy combo.

Mumsnet HQ recently decided to see if the Sienna Hoodie Blanket lived up to the hype by putting it through its paces over several months of testing. Read our Sienna Hoodie Blanket Review here.

2. Best value blanket hoodie: Dunelm Teddy Blanket Hoodie

Price on writing: £13 | Buy now from Dunelm

Key specs

Size: 98cm length, 97cm chest | Colours: Charcoal, cream, pink, silver, black, lilypad | Material: 100% Polyester

What we love

  • Machine washable
  • Includes pouch pocket

What to know

  • Some reviewers said material feels thinner than alternatives

What Mumsnet users say

"I just bought dunelms own brand one. I think it's about £16 and super cosy!" (Tried and tested by Mumsnet user princesssparklepants)

"I find the Dunelm one easier to wear because it isn't as thick and warm. I felt a bit trapped in an Oodie and overheated quickly. The Dunelm is more of just a bit fleecy dressing gown, except in the hoodie style." (Tried and tested by Mumsnet user ColdHappyBap)

Our verdict

This super warm Teddy Bear Blanket Hoodie from Dunelm ticks all the boxes - it's long, cosy, soft and affordable at just under £13. We like the fact that it's not quite as thick as the likes of the Ony or Oodie, making it an easy option to shrug your coat or best heated gilet over the top if you need to pop out but can't quite bring yourself to remove it. Despite its lighter feel, the Teddy Blanket Hoodie is still a super-warm choice, with several reviewers reporting that they have been able to turn the heating down or off completely whilst wearing it.

It features a large, pouch pocket (ideal for storing snacks) and handy cuffed sleeves.

If the plain options aren't your thing, Dunlem also have patterned options including Tao the Tiger Blanket Hoodie and Dotty Oversized Blanket Hoodie.

3. Warmest blanket hoodie for adults and kids: Ony Original Oversized Hooded Blanket,

Image of Ony Hoodies for Adults and Kids.

Price on writing: £38.99 | Buy now from John Lewis

Key specs

Size: 100cm length x 100cm width |  Colours: blue, purple, red, grey, cream, pink, black |  Material: 100% Polyester | Washing Instructions: Machine Washable

What we love

  • Very soft
  • Extra cosy and thick
  • Large front pouch
  • Cheaper then other brands
  • Washes well

What to know

  • Not as long as other blanket hoodies

What Mumsnet users say

"I've got an Ony and it's lush" (Recommended by Mumsnet user reallyworriedjobhunter)

"That's what I'm buying my family for christmas this year, I know none of them have one or will be likely to buy themselves one on the run up to christmas. I also know they'll all wear them too, including my mum who started of saying she wouldn't wear one but has changed her mind, I've managed to find her a shorter length one in her fav colour cream (Ony from JL). I'm hoping dh buys me one! Jan through to March are always the coldest months." (Tried and tested by Mumsnetter Mrsfussypants1)

Our verdict

The Ony Hooded Blanket comes highly recommended by both Mumsnet users and John Lewis' customer reviews for its warmth, cosiness and soft fabric. Dual-layered with a soft outer flannel fleece and an extra thick inner Sherpa fleece saves on heating by keeping you extra toasty. Remember, you can buy one for the kids too!

Other features we love are the front pocket (large enough for you to pop in your best hot water bottle) the fact that it's long enough to cover your knees and its wide range of colours suitable for women, men and children. In light of the cost of living crisis, this option is too good to pass up, especially when reviewers rave about how much it has saved them on their heating bill.

The only downsides you might like to consider before buying are that it isn’t as long as other blanket hoodies, some reported a little bit of shedding, and although it is cheaper than other brands, it is not the most affordable option on this list. Although, we would argue it's an excellent mid-budget option.

4. Most popular blanket hoodie: Oodie Supersoft Hooded Blanket

two women in Oodies

Price on writing: From £59 | Buy now from The Oodie

Key specs

Size: 98cm (excl. hood), 6XL | Colours/patterns: too many to list! | Material: flannel and Sherpa fleece

What we love

  • Good quality
  • Huge range of colours and patterns
  • Bundle options to reduce price

What to know

  • Expensive

What Mumsnet users say

"They are expensive but I was surprised that actually it’s very, very good quality and ours has been well worn so I would get a real one if it is in budget." (Tried and tested by Mumsnet user Smallkeys)

"I have a cat one and it’s genuinely the best thing I’ve ever bought. I’m getting a second one soon!" (Recommended by Mumsnet user WiseUpRiseUpEyesUp)

Our verdict

Despite being more expensive than other blanket hoodies, many Mumsnet users wouldn’t be without their Oodie hooded blanket and feel it’s certainly worth the extra money.  The range of designs is hugely impressive, including everything from limited edition licensed designs such as Harry PotterLooney Tunes and Friends, to avocadospenguinsstar signs and pandas

This one-size-fits-all hooded blanket has a soft flannel fleece on the outside and warm Sherpa fleece on the inside. Suitable for camping trips, evening naps on the couch or cuddling up with your furry friend, it’s machine washable so when it’s time to part ways for a few hours just toss it in the drum.

And if the patterns aren't your thing, they also have a more subtle range of Original Oodies too, with black, navy and grey designs that won’t look out of place on your Teams calls when working from home.

It’s definitely worth holding out for a sale or a promotion if you’re stocking up for the whole family as they can be a pricey addition to your wardrobe, or teaming up with friends to buy the Bundle & Save deals. The Mega Pack is the most affordable way to buy, bringing the price per Oodie down quite considerably.

Combine your Oodie with a new pair of the best women's slippers to keep your feet as warm as the rest of you this winter.

Mumsnet HQ recently decided to see if the Oodie lived up to all the hype, putting two of its designs through months of rigorous testing: check out our recent Oodie Review 2022.

Best oversized blanket Kudd.ly Hoodie Blanket

Price on writing: £49 | Buy now from Kudd.ly

Key specs

Size: 6XL | Colours: grey, blue, pink, sky blue, black, koala, unicorn, stars, tie-dye | Materials: MicroCool flannel fleece, Sherpa fleece

What we love

  • Good quality
  • Good range of designs
  • Comes with storage bag

What to know

  • Expensive

What Mumsnet users say

“I have a Kudd.ly, it's beaten Oodies in some comparisons. It's very warm and I live in the south west so it was actually too warm some days.”  (Tried and tested by Mumsnet user GettingStuffed)

“I have a Kudd.ly. I'm a size 16 and it fits me and my four-year-old grandson with room to spare.” (Recommended by Mumsnet user goose1964

Our verdict

Probably the biggest competitor to Oodie right now, Kudd.ly’s range of hoodie blankets have really grown in popularity over recent months and they now claim to be the number one ranked oversized blanket hoodie in the UK. We love the versatility of the breathable MicroCool teddy fleece, the exterior is moisture-wicking and prevents overheating on milder days, whilst inside, the plush sherpa fleece feels soft, cosy and gentle against your skin.

Available in one-size-fits-all, the Kudd.ly Hoodie Blanket comes in a choice of nine plain or patterned designs in medium length.

There’s the familiar extra large pouch pocket to the front for storing your essentials (why not stick one of the best hand warmers in there if you struggle with poor circulation when it's cold) and it’s fully machine washable (and you can also chuck it in the tumble dryer on a low setting).

Reviewers love the addition of a storage bag and the 30-day money back guarantee means you can buy with peace of mind. Kudd.ly also offer bulk discounts, so the more you buy, the less you pay per hoodie blanket.

6. Best fleece blanket hoodie: M&S Oversized Fleece Hoodie

Price on writing: £32 | Buy now from Marks and Spencer

Key specs

Size: One size | Colours: blue, opaline, Harry Potter, Percy Pig, Christmas, Snoopy | Materials: recycled polyester

What we love

  • Reasonably priced
  • Range of sizes
  • Fun designs

What to know

  • Fits a little big

What Mumsnet users say

“M&S have got a range of them now, about £25 each.” (Suggested by Mumsnet user autumnboys)

“M&S has a nice one that looks all teddy-like.” (Admired by Mumsnet user Ontomatopea)

Our verdict

If you’re after a blanket hoodie but not keen on the bright and bold patterns of some brands, the M&S Oversized Fleece Hoodie is ideal. It not only comes in a stylish and neutral fleece design but is slightly less restrictive too, with a style more resembling a poncho than an oversized sweatshirt. (And, if you do love a fun pattern, M&S also do those - don't miss the popular Percy Pig style!) Available in a choice of colours and fun patterns, M&S' blanket hoodies are presentable to drape across your sofa ready for evening snuggles and trap in heat to keep you extra toasty. Slip it on over the top of your best thermal underwear and you may not even need to turn the heating on at all.

The M&S blanket hoodie also comes in kids' and men's sizes too, perfect for coordinating your winter loungewear!

7. Best long blanket hoodie: Sienna Extra Long Oversized Blanket Hoodie

Price on writing: From £15 | Buy now from Amazon

What we love

  • Reasonably priced
  • Legs won't get cold

What to know

What Mumsnet users say

"I've got a Sienna one from Amazon. It has been fab for the year or two I've had it. Oodies look amazing (I can't afford one), but for £20 the sienna is very good."  (Tried and tested by Mumsnet user DinosApple)

Our verdict

A new entry for our top ranking best blanket hoodie brand Sienna, this extra long version is sure to banish all hints of a chill, providing the perfect accompaniment for chilly nights in or working from home over the cold snap this winter. There's a soft sherpa lining which looks lovely contrasted with the charcoal grey or blush pink, and a two-sided kangeroo pouch pocket provides extra convenience.

There are plenty of colours available and it's a unisex design so plenty of options for co-ordinating with your other half if that's your thing (and for those who prefer robes, don't miss our guides to the best men's dressing gowns and best women's dressing gowns.)

8. Best sherpa blanket hoodie: Seogva Oversized Sherpa Hoodie

Seogva blanket hoodie

Price on writing: From £20 | Buy now from Amazon

Key specs

Size: 36" length, 62" waist, 30" arms | Colours: Black, navy, pink, red, purple, grey, camo, corgis, multi | Materials: Polyester

What we love

  • Good range of colours and patterns
  • Large pocket
  • Machine washable

What to know

  • Lining may shed

What Mumsnet users say

“We got the Sherpa versions from Amazon. They're really warm, good quality and wash very well.” (Type of blanket hoodie recommended by Mumsnet user iklboo)

Our verdict

If you want complete coverage when you’re curled up under your heated throw, this hoodie — which comes in a variety of bold colours including ‘wine red’ and ‘violet’ — could be the one for you. With these longer blanket hoodies, you can really envelope your whole body, pulling your legs into the fluffy Sherpa lining and covering yourself completely.

Whether you’re unwinding indoors, camping near the coast or even hiking through woodlands, this blanket hoodie will keep you snug. 9. Best heated blanket hoodie: OHS Heated Hoodie Blanket

Price on writing: From £29| Buy now from The Range

Key specs

Size: One Size Fits All (72" Waist, 34" Body, 36" Arms) | Colours: Grey, pink | Materials: Polyester

What we love

  • Heat pads on front, back and shoulders
  • Machine washable

What to know

  • Battery pack not included

What Mumsnet users say

"Just found this at OHS." (Discovered by Mumsnet user Mrsfussypants1)

Our verdict

Taking the warmth and cosiness of the traditional blanket hoodie to the next level, this clever heated blanket hoodie from OHS features battery-operated heat pads on the front, back and shoulders for extra warmth. Enveloped in the super-soft sherpa lining, you'll feel like you're wearing one big hand warmer with this hoodie.

It's fully machine-washable too, so when it needs a clean, simply remove the battery pack, pop it in the washing machine at 30 degrees and hang it up on a heated clothes airer. Our only critique is that it doesn't include the battery power pack needed to power up the heating element, though these can be found easily from several retailers.

10. Best blanket hoodie for kids: Rejuvopdeic Deluxe Kids Hoodie Blanket

Rejuvopdeic blanket hoodie

Price on writing: £14 | Buy now from Amazon

Key specs

Size: 111cm length, 76cm width  | Colours: Pink, grey, dark grey | Materials: Polyester, Sherpa

What we love

  • Will fit kids for years
  • Good price

What to know

  • Not suitable for sleeping in

Our verdict

Whilst many oversized blanket hoodies are big enough to sneak the kids inside too (and trust us, they’re probably going to want to give that a go), you may prefer to treat them to their own (and, on that note, don't miss our dedicated page for the best kids' blanket hoodies).

Once you’ve introduced them to these super plush velvet-touch Sherpa fleece-lined blanket hoodies, it’ll be hard to get your little ones out. The oversized style has a cosy fit with elasticated cuffs and giant pockets and will keep your rug rats warm when they’re snuggling up with you on the sofa or reading a book in their bedroom.

It’s machine washable at 30 degrees and can be popped in the tumble dryer on a cool setting and comes at a really affordable price. It’s worth noting, however, that for safety reasons, young children shouldn’t sleep in hooded blankets – no matter how tempting that may be. If they are still chilly in bed, check out the best kids' hot water bottles and kids' weighted blankets for safer options to keep them toasty.

11. Best blanket hoodie with a print: Mubineo Family Matching Oversized Wearable Hoodie Blanket

Mubineo Family Matching Oversized Hoodie Blanket Soft Sherpa Wearable Blanket Hoodie

Price on writing: From £25 | Buy now from Amazon

Key specs

What we love

  • Huge range of fun patterns
  • Matching family options

What to know

  • More expensive than similar options

Our verdict

The popularity of matching family outfits, especially during the winter season, has really grown in recent years. If you’re after a range of hooded blankets where the whole family can have the same design, the budget-friendly Mubineo Matching Oversized Hoodie Blanket range is a great place to start. Cosy and warm, with a Sherpa fleece lining and a large pocket to the front, they will look great in a family selfie during winter movie nights.

There are some really fun designs here too, from avocados and aliens to sloths, pandas and penguins, so you can choose the style that best suits your child’s personality before treating yourself to the matching design. The kids' hoodies are suitable for children aged seven and above, whilst the adult version is one-size-fits-all.

What is a blanket hoodie?

Blanket hoodies (or hooded blankets) are basically a large jumper with a hood that doubles up as a blanket or, in more simple terms, they're oversized hoodies. They're not only functional (keeping you super warm) but they can be stylish and cosy too. Blanket hoodies are a versatile garment for your wardrobe and they're perfect for lounging on the sofa, wearing after a gym session, taking on a camping trip or keeping the wind chill off at the beach.

Are blanket hoodies worth it?

If you're trying to cut down on your heating bill this winter, we think a blanket hoodie is well worth investing in. Check out MNHQ's review of the Sienna Hoodie Blanket, where our tester describes it as "a godsend for keeping warm when [the heating's] off."  Similarly, one of our Oodie reviewers remarked, "It's definitely worth it, especially now that heating costs so much. You can wear it on the go, which has an advantage over a blanket."

What material is best for a blanket hoodie?

The best materials for hoodies are cotton and polyester, or a blend of the two. Cotton is breathable and soft, while polyester is durable and moisture-wicking. Many blanket hoodies feature a fleece lining. Fleece is an extra insulating fabric and can be made from natural cotton or synthetic material.

Are Oodies worth the money?

The jury’s out on this. Some buyers reckon it’s worth the extra money with one Mumsnetter saying: "100% yes, I have a cat one and it’s genuinely the best thing I have ever bought". But other Mumsnet users think it’s overpriced and you’re paying for the brand name and cheaper brands are just as good. If you've got your heart set on an Oodie original, look out for their seasonal sales to grab yourself a bargain or take advantage of their Bundle & Save deals. Check out our recent Oodie review, where testers put the popular brand through its paces over several months of testing.

What is better than an Oodie?

If you’re less bothered about patterns and branded designs, there are some great Oodie alternatives with a more affordable price tag as showcased in the selection above. In terms of warmth, Kudd.ly is a strong contender for the blanket hoodie crown. We also think our top-rated blanket hoodie, the Sienna, pacts a real punch when it comes to warmth and comfort, and for a fraction of the price of an Oodie. Read our Sienna Hoodie Blanket Review here.

What is the best blanket hoodie to buy?

The best blanket hoodie is the Sienna Hoodie Blanket Ultra Soft Sherpa Fleece. Not only are Mumsnet users raving about it on the forums, but users give it a big thumbs up in reviews across the wider web. It’s super soft with two easily accessible, giant pockets making it perfect for lazy days on the sofa. And it’s reasonably priced as well at just £15.

If you’re prepared to push the boat out on budget to secure some additional warmth, Oodie and Kudd.ly are excellent choices – when you can get them at the right price. Both offer discounts for bulk orders, so now's the time to team up with friends to help keep the cost down.
