Best blanket hoodies for kids: soft and cosy picks for children

Mumsnet users have been buying blanket hoodies in their droves this year so we've rounded up some mini versions so your kids can stay snug and toasty too.

By Lucy Cotterill | Last updated Dec 8, 2022

Joreay kids blanket hoodie

We've spent plenty of time at home over the last couple of years and lockdown lounging has made us rethink our wardrobes to put a focus on comfort and cosiness. And there's nothing cosier than a big old blanket hoodie. If you're looking to add to your child's comfort-wear stash, we'd recommend nabbing a blanket hoodie for kids to keep them warm throughout winter.

They're not only a fun gift – they're practical too. As the impact of the cost of living crisis hits the UK, and many look for ways to keep their thermostat as low as possible, blanket hoodies are being pitched as a relatively cheap way to stay warm, along with finding the best hot water bottle and best electric blanket for your family and home.

With a huge range of designs on offer – from avocados to Harry Potter, cockapoos to garlic bread – kids' blanket hoodies are at the top of everyone's Christmas list this festive season. If you're thinking of buying one for your child, then we've done the hard work for you, scouring our forums – the biggest network of parents in the UK – for the top recommendations of the best blanket hoodies for kids, as well as perusing consumer reviews and expert opinions.

Tempted yourself? Check out our guide to the best blanket hoodie for adults too – they make fantastic gifts especially when paired with the best women's slippers.

Here are the best kids' blanket hoodies 2022.

What Mumsnet users say:

“The Comfy Junior is excellent. Bought one for my small nine-year-old last year as my older daughter asked for one not thinking it would be a huge hit. He’s worn it virtually every day and we use it after swimming too, very warm and cosy.”  (Tried and tested by Mumsnet user 99redballoon)

“The Comfy is brilliant. I've got one and bought them for all my (older teens) kids. Washes well. So warm & cosy” (Recommended by Mumsnet user CoffeeBeansGalore

Our verdict

Our favourite features? The Comfy Junior offers a snug and comfortable fit specifically for children under the age of ten, so you won't find it dragging on the floor or slipping off the shoulders whilst your child is wearing it.

The warm sherpa fabric makes it a cosy choice to wear during breakfast or chilling around the house after school. Available in a choice of five colours, each with a large pocket to the front, it's perfect for storing snacks (or even the remote control). Best of all, it comes in coordinating adult sizes too, so the whole family can match while kicking back under the best heated throw for movie nights on the sofa.

Sienna kids blanket hoodie

Reasons to buy

  • Affordable alternative to Oodie and Kudd.ly
  • Consistently recommended by Mumsnet users

Reasons to avoid

  • Limited choice of colours
  • No character or patterned designs

What Mumsnet users say

“Two years ago I bought my daughter an Oodie. Last year I got her this one which cost less than £20. She hasn’t worn the Oodie since. Which is galling, to say the least.”  (Tried and tested by Mumsnet user exLtEveDallas)

“The Sienna is thinner and looser around the wrists than Oodie. In that respect, they are easier to wear about the house if you are doing things.” (Recommended by Mumsnet user Paddingtonthebear

Our verdict

Our favourite features? Great quality for a good price.

It may be somewhat thinner than the original Oodie blanket, but Sienna blanket hoodies have been selling like hot cakes this year, with many Mumsnetters recommending them as a more affordable alternative. The price point for the Sienna Kids Oversized Hoodie Blanket is less than £20, which certainly appeals to parents, but don’t think you’re sacrificing on quality - many Mumsnet users couldn’t tell the difference!

With warm microfibres on the outside and soft Sherpa across the body and hood, these hoodie blankets come in a ‘one-size-fits-all’ style in two colour choices - Blush Pink and Charcoal Grey. We think it'd make a great present alongside a kids' hot water bottle for a truly cosy Christmas.

  • Often voted the warmest blanket hoodie by Mumsnet users

Reasons to avoid

What Mumsnet users say

“I got a family Oodie bundle last year for kids/step-kids. They are amazing. My step-daughter also got a fake one and that’s not as good. My children pretty much live in them and they wash well too.”  (Tried and tested by Mumsnet user AdamRyan)

“I got the kids Oodies (kids' versions) last year and they absolutely loved them. I think they are really worth it.” (Recommended by Mumsnet user Starlight86

Our verdict

Our favourite features? The sheer size of the Oodie range means there's bound to be one to suit every child's passion, from pizza to garlic bread (yes, really!)

If you're looking for a longer and warmer blanket hoodie then you should definitely consider investing in an Oodie. Around 30% longer than most of the competition (according to Oodie itself), the Kids' Oodie blanket hoodie is incredibly warm thanks to its flannel fleece exterior and 100% Sherpa fleece interior.

The Oodie has a bit of a cult following and if you want to buy your child one of these, it’s worth noting they don't come cheap, particularly for their licensed designs. Look out for their bundle deals and offers to get the most competitive price.

Our favourite features? - Bulk discounts if buying for multiple teens

Probably the biggest competitor to Oodie, Kudd.ly’s range of hoodie blankets are a popular alternative against Mumsnet users and Kudd.ly now claim to be the number one ranked oversized blanket hoodie in the UK. Whilst they don’t have a hoodie blanket specifically for kids, they do offer some fun designs that will appeal to older kids and teens including a gorgeous glow in the dark star design which may be finding its way onto our list for Santa.

With an extra large pouch pocket to the front, it’s also fully machine washable (if you can ever get them to take it off). Kudd.ly also offer bulk discounts, which is ideal if you’re planning to buy hoodie blankets for the entire family.

On the hunt for a cosy blanket hoodie for yourself? Here's our pick of the best blanket hoodies for women.

What are blanket hoodies good for?

At the moment, energy prices are surging and most of us are looking for ways to stay warm without whacking up the heating, so ensuring everybody in the house has a cosy blanket hoodie to wear makes sense.

Blanket hoodies can be worn anywhere, but they're particularly good for when you want to snuggle up in front of a film, for throwing on after football practice, or for having to hand when you go on your next camping trip.

Are blanket hoodies washable?

Most blanket hoodies are suitable to throw in the washing machine, which is great because it'll pick up germs and dirt if your child wears it a lot.

Make sure you double check the label before putting it in the washing machine though, to ensure that the temperature is right. You don't want to accidentally shrink your kid's blanket hoodie!

What is the best blanket hoodie to buy for kids?

It was hard to choose an overall winner, but we think the The Comfy Original Junior is the best kids blanket hoodie to buy in 2022.

With a medium price point, it offers a thick and cosy blanket hoodie that balances cost and warmth. They have a good choice of designs available, with matching adult versions too, meaning the whole family can snuggle up and coordinate this winter.

We're confident that most children would be happy with one of these blanket hoodies.

How we chose our recommendations

We spent several hours sifting through Mumsnet's forums for recommendations from our users on the blanket hoodies for kids they rated most highly. We were also on the lookout for poor reviews of products to avoid.

We also consulted recommendations from experts, consumer websites and print media and made sure we included brands that regularly appeared in top 10 lists.

We then looked at reviews for each of our longlisted blanket hoodies for kids to check that previous customers were satisfied with their purchases.

By doing this, we whittled our longlist down and chose a top list that we think offers something for everybody. We make every effort to keep our listings up to date to reflect current prices and stock.
