Best kids' blanket hoodies: warm and cosy picks for children

Mumsnet users bought blanket hoodies in their droves last winter, so we've rounded up some mini versions so your kids can stay snug and toasty this year too. Here are the best kids' blanket hoodies UK.

By Lucy Cotterill | Last updated Nov 28, 2023

Selection of the best kids' blanket hoodies

When temperatures plummet, there's nothing cosier than a big old blanket hoodie to keep you snug. If you're looking to add to your child's comfort-wear stash (and stop them reaching for the thermostat), we'd recommend nabbing a blanket hoodie for kids to keep them warm throughout winter.

They're not only a fun gift – the best kids' blanket hoodies are practical too. As the impact of the cost of living crisis hits the UK, and many look for ways to keep their central heating as low as possible, blanket hoodies are being pitched as a relatively cheap way to stay warm. Much like the best electric blankets and hot water bottles, blanket hoodies focus on heating the person rather than the room, which can prove to be more cost-effective.

How we chose the best kids' blanket hoodies

With a huge range of designs on offer – from avocados to Harry Potter, cockapoos to garlic bread – our guide includes something for everyone. If you're thinking of splashing out on one of the best blanket hoodies for kids, then we've done the hard work for you, first scouring the Mumsnet forums – the biggest network of parents in the UK – for the top recommendations of the best oversized hoodies for kids. We then perused consumer reviews and expert opinions, before doing our own extensive testing on selected products to whittle down our shortlist.

Tempted yourself? Check out our guide to the best blanket hoodie for adults too – they make fantastic gifts, especially when paired with a pair of cosy women's slippers.

The Comfy Junior is excellent. Bought one for my small nine-year-old last year... He’s worn it virtually every day and we use it after swimming too. Very warm and cosy.

The Comfy is brilliant. I've got one and bought them for all my (older teens) kids. Washes well. So warm and cosy.
See Post

Our verdict

The Comfy Junior offers a snug and comfortable fit specifically for children under the age of ten, so you won't find it dragging on the floor or slipping off the shoulders whilst your child is wearing it.

The warm sherpa fabric makes it a cosy choice to wear during breakfast or chilling around the house after school. Available in a choice of five colours, each with a large pocket to the front, it's perfect for storing snacks (or even the remote control). Best of all, it comes in coordinating adult sizes too, so the whole family can match while kicking back under the best heated throw for movie nights on the sofa.

Two years ago I bought my daughter an Oodie. Last year I got her this one, which cost less than £20. She hasn’t worn the Oodie since. Which is galling, to say the least.

The Sienna is thinner and looser around the wrists than Oodie. In that respect, they are easier to wear about the house if you are doing things.
See Post

Our verdict

It may be somewhat thinner than the original Oodie blanket, but Sienna blanket hoodies have been selling like hot cakes this year, with many Mumsnetters recommending them as a more affordable alternative. The price point for the Sienna Kids Oversized Hoodie Blanket is less than £20, which certainly appeals to parents, but don’t think you’re sacrificing on quality - many Mumsnet users couldn’t tell the difference!

With warm microfibres on the outside and soft sherpa across the body and hood, these hoodie blankets come in a ‘one-size-fits-all’ style in two colour choices - 'Blush Pink' and 'Charcoal Grey'. Pair with one of the best kids' hot water bottles for a truly cosy winter.

I got a family Oodie bundle last year for kids/step-kids. They are amazing. My step-daughter also got a fake one and that’s not as good. My children pretty much live in them and they wash well too.

I got the kids Oodies (kids' versions) last year and they absolutely loved them. I think they are really worth it.
See Post

Our verdict

If you're looking for a longer and warmer blanket hoodie, you should definitely consider investing in an Oodie. Around 30% longer than most of the competition (according to Oodie itself), the Kids' Oodie blanket hoodie is incredibly warm thanks to its flannel fleece exterior and 100% sherpa fleece interior. The sheer size of the Oodie range means there's bound to be one to suit every child's passion, from koalas to garlic bread (yes, really!)

The Oodie has a bit of a cult following, and if you want to buy your child one of these, it’s worth noting they don't come cheap, particularly for their licensed designs. Look out for their bundle deals and sales offers to get the most competitive price – you can currently get one from £37.

Best blanket hoodie for younger kids

The Big Softy Kids' Oversized Hoodie

What we like
  • Choice of three cute animal designs

  • Reversible with no visible stitching

  • Cute ears

What we don't like
  • Older children may prefer a more ‘grown-up’ design

Key specs

Price on writing: £20 | Sizes: Designed for ages 4 to 10 | Materials: Micro fleece, sherpa lining

Our verdict

Ideal for younger children (aged four to ten), The Big Softy Oversized Hoodie comes in a choice of three adorable animal designs, each with super cute little ears (or a fin!) incorporated onto the hood.

It's quick and easy for kids to slip on unassisted, as well as being fully reversible without any visible stitching. The Big Softy hoodie blanket is also made with thicker micro fleece than many of the cheaper alternatives, and it has a large character pocket to the front, ideal for storing one of the best hand warmers in for the frostiest days.

Best character kids' blanket hoodie

What we don't like
  • May be too long for younger children

  • Not all Disney characters included in the range

Ordered a Disney Stitch oversized hoodie from Amazon for my daughter, it's lovely, really nice quality. A good choice as a cheaper alternative [to Oodie]!
See Post

Our verdict

Despite it being over 20 years since its original release, kids seem to be more obsessed with Stitch recently than ever. As a result, it’s no surprise that there are three unique Stitch hoodie blankets to choose from in this range of Disney Kids' Oversized Hoodie Blankets (as well as a range of other licensed designs).

With cute 3D ears, embroidery and designs that span the front and back of the hoodie, it's a soft and snuggly hooded blanket that is sure to appeal to tweens and teens.

Our verdict

If you’re buying a hoodie blanket as a gift and are worried that you’ll pick the wrong colour or pattern, the subtle design of this Dunelm Oversized Blanket Hoodie is a great unisex all-rounder with cute ears on the hood - and it also comes in an adorable 'Reggie the Cockapoo' theme too.

Whilst it's a little shorter than some children’s hoodie blankets, it's soft and comfortable with a generous pocket to the front. Dunlem also sells a matching adult design, making it a great option for family members or siblings who like to embrace the twinning.

We have Kudd.lys, which are great, but they don't have many designs to choose from.
See Post

Our verdict

Probably the biggest competitor to Oodie, Kuddly’s range of hoodie blankets is a popular alternative amongst Mumsnet users, and Kuddly now claim to be the number one ranked oversized blanket hoodie in the UK. When we tested it, we found it was super cosy and warm, and it retained its softness after being popped in the washing machine – although admittedly, it was hard to part with it, even for just that short period of time!

Whilst they don’t have a hoodie blanket specifically for children, they do offer some fun designs that will appeal to older kids and teens, including a gorgeous glow in the dark star design. Just bear in mind that this is a very big option (6XL), so it will swamp little ones. It's quite pricey too, but we think the quality is worth it, and Kuddly offer bulk discounts if you’re planning to buy hoodie blankets for the entire family.

What is the best kids' blanket hoodie?

It was hard to choose an overall winner, but we think the The Comfy Original Junior is the best kids' blanket hoodie to buy in 2023.

With a mid-range price point, it offers a thick and cosy blanket hoodie that balances cost and warmth. There's a good choice of designs available, with matching adult versions too, meaning the whole family can snuggle up and coordinate this winter.

If your budget can stretch, we also love the selection of Oodies for kids too. They're thick, cosy and warm, and the vast range of patterns/colours is unrivalled by other brands.

How we chose the best kids' blanket hoodie

Recommendations from real Mumsnet users

First up, we sought out real parents' tried-and-tested recommendations on the Mumsnet forums to discover what blanket hoodies our users had bought for their own children. We weighed up their comments on the warmth, softness, quality, and washability of each blanket hoodie to evaluate whether it deserved a place on our shortlist or not.

Authentic consumer reviews

We then scoured all the most recent hoodie blanket reviews to see what consumers and experts thought to each product, carefully analysing the merits and disadvantages of each one.

How we tested

In addition, we also extensively tested out our pick for the best blanket hoodie for teens, the Kuddly. To ensure it lived up to its hype, MNHQ editor Natasha Gregson put it through its paces in her chilly north London home. After two weeks of daily use, she then analysed the blanket hoodie, scoring its warmth, how comfy it was to wear, the overall design and how well it washed.
