Just saw this on P*k News
www.pinknews.co.uk/2018/07/04/speaker-john-bercow-tells-pinknews-reception-2/

Bercow
"There’s still a huge challenge in terms of the trans community. We need to up our level of standing up for the rights of trans people. We shouldn’t allow people to peddle anti-trans messages under the guise of trying to protect other people’s rights. We shouldn’t let people muddy the waters in that way. It’s just not people screaming abuse in the streets – it’s sometimes people who have access to the media and can write articulately, and are using their position to push messages which I think result in very considerable and dangerous displays of hostility to trans people. Up with that we must not put, as Churchill might have said.”

What on earth is he doing? How can a supposedly-independent speaker intervene on something in the middle of the government consultation?

I like to think Churchill would not have been a trans-activist.

boatyardblues · 05/07/2018 17:32

We all knew Bercow was a sexist, grandstanding plonker. This is no surprise.

Lottapianos · 05/07/2018 17:33

Well you can piss off Bercow. Thanks for nowt

BettyDuMonde · 05/07/2018 17:35

I bet there are a good few cross dressers in the Conservative Party...

ErrolTheDragon · 05/07/2018 17:35

We shouldn’t allow people to peddle anti-trans messages under the guise of trying to protect other people’s rights.

Well, that doesn't seem to be at all relevant to women trying to protect women's rights. Who's been 'screaming abuse in the streets'?Confused

Pratchet · 05/07/2018 17:36

He's a run of the mill ignorant sexist. So there's that.

MIdgebabe · 05/07/2018 17:39

I agree with him in principle. Only I don't see why he needs to make the point. messages about the impact on women rights are rarely anti trans.

What he should have said is that we should not allow people to peddle the idea of misogyny under the guise of Antitrans as this seems much more common. See the Brighton newspaper article today where the accusation of antitrans was made on the basis that women wanted to talk.

TransplantsArePlants · 05/07/2018 17:43

Oh the irony of claiming it is GC feminists who have heretofore wielded all the power in this debate.

Oh the irony of blaming women for hostility towards trans people. He's a man. He knows all about being a bully

People in the media are just beginning to say what they think and he doesn't like it. Odious man

R0wantrees · 05/07/2018 17:43

I really think someone needs to have a look at Pink News' influence (and output!).

Middleoftheroad · 05/07/2018 17:45

Considering the historic allegations of bullying against him, I find his comments jarring.

Also, I've met him and he was vile and sexist.
So if you put a bully and sexist together is it a surprise he's using his male privilege to oppress women again?

Floorplan · 05/07/2018 17:50

I feel like printing out the entire contents of terfisaslur and posting it to his office

BettyDuMonde · 05/07/2018 17:51

I can get you a stamp!

LangCleg · 05/07/2018 17:52

I know someone who went to uni with him. Was not popular with the FemSoc!

R0wantrees · 05/07/2018 17:52

So to be clear... the Women's & Equalities Minister has stated that 'transwomen are women' is the starting point and the Speaker has declared his:

“most explicit and unequivocal statement of support” for LGBT rights and PinkNews.

In his speech, the Speaker hit out at anti-transgender voices in the media, the week the government launched a much-criticised consultation on gender recognition rules.

He said: “There’s still a huge challenge in terms of the trans community. We need to up our level of standing up for the rights of trans people.

“We shouldn’t allow people to peddle anti-trans messages under the guise of trying to protect other people’s rights. We shouldn’t let people muddy the waters in that way.

“It’s just not people screaming abuse in the streets – it’s sometimes people who have access to the media and can write articulately, and are using their position to push messages which I think result in very considerable and dangerous displays of hostility to trans people.

“Up with that we must not put, as Churchill might have said.”

Winston Churchill in the U.K. Parliament on October 13, 1943:

'So we must beware of a tyranny of opinion which tries to make only one side of a question the one which may be heard. Everyone is in favour of free speech. Hardly a day passes without its being extolled, but some people’s idea of it is that they are free to say what they like, but if anyone says anything back, that is an outrage.'

Floorplan · 05/07/2018 17:53

Thanks Betty Smile

Floorplan · 05/07/2018 17:55

And thanks R0wan says it all really doesnt it

SomeDyke · 05/07/2018 17:56

Hell of a day when someone has to quote Churchill to counter the Speaker of the House...........

But shows that our naughty voices are being heard, we are being disagreed with rather than ignored.

R0wantrees · 05/07/2018 18:00

I may send him a postcard.

Pratchet · 05/07/2018 18:05

I live in a dream world where Penny Mordaunt and Justine are throwing TRA off the scent while they secretly plot to end the prospect of Self ID.

Now I'm the delusional one.

SoddingUnicorns · 05/07/2018 18:10

John Bercow is a odious little man.

Dljlr · 05/07/2018 18:10

I'm quite happy to be in a position whereby my own views conflict with those of John Bercow. It's actually rather reassuring :)

R0wantrees · 05/07/2018 18:13

I have a dream where a large group of compassionate and intelligent grown-ups slowly walk into view, switch off twitter for a while and ask everyone to sit down quietly so this can all be sorted out.

Pratchet · 05/07/2018 18:14

We are the only ones left

Wanderabout · 05/07/2018 18:15

I notice no condemnation of the violence and bomb threats against women.

R0wantrees · 05/07/2018 18:15

SomeDyke
I believe that may have been my first Churchill quote on any social media platform ever!
