Just saw this on P*k News
www.pinknews.co.uk/2018/07/04/speaker-john-bercow-tells-pinknews-reception-2/

Bercow
"There’s still a huge challenge in terms of the trans community. We need to up our level of standing up for the rights of trans people. We shouldn’t allow people to peddle anti-trans messages under the guise of trying to protect other people’s rights. We shouldn’t let people muddy the waters in that way. It’s just not people screaming abuse in the streets – it’s sometimes people who have access to the media and can write articulately, and are using their position to push messages which I think result in very considerable and dangerous displays of hostility to trans people. Up with that we must not put, as Churchill might have said.”

What on earth is he doing? How can a supposedly-independent speaker intervene on something in the middle of the government consultation?

@MIdgebabe

I agree with him in principle. Only I don't see why he needs to make the point. messages about the impact on women rights are rarely anti trans.

What he should have said is that we should not allow people to peddle the idea of misogyny under the guise of Antitrans as this seems much more common. See the Brighton newspaper article today where the accusation of antitrans was made on the basis that women wanted to talk.

Not to derail - what article you referring to?? Thanks!

@Movingonup22 you might not get a reply. This thread was started in 2018 and bumped today due to the news about Bercow.

@OvaHere oh thank you! Ive just been searching the argus and getting annoyed I can't see the article Grin Attention to detail lacking....

@ChattyLion

I find this very disappointing from Bercow who is pro choice. I had naively assumed from that that he had an inkling around the importance of listening to women’s voices. Hmm
@ChattyLion Opinions like pro-choice are not always what they seem. Some men are pro choice not because they care about the women, but because they, as men, want the choice to be able to aid a woman's abortion without it being illegal. It's about giving men more options than it is about women.

One of the complainants, Lt. Gen. David Leakey, is on Newsnight at the moment. Apparently Bercow said something really unpleasant to him today (having bumped into him in Westminster) - he wouldn't repeat what Bercow said. Clearly the idiot doesn't learn. What a spectacular fall. So glad he will not be in the HoL, him and Cashman ganging up together would have been a nightmare for women's rights.

That's a really good point. See also: men who chant "sex work is work" and call some feminists "swerfs".

Never was a fan. Good to find my instincts were correct.

This.

I thought I'd read he had defected to Labour. If his stance is TWAW he'll find a natural home and a ready welcome there. Never mind the bullying and misogyny; as long as people are chanting the right dogma then Labour seem more than willing to close their eyes to the weightier stuff.

Interesting comments upthread about his potential motivation. This is not a man who otherwise aligns easily with 'wokeness' (however lazy a generalization that label might be).

And I don't normally comment on people's physical appearance, but isn't it interesting how frequently the correlation between short-arses, bullying and aggression manifests itself in men. Coincidence?

nauticant · 09/03/2022 13:42

He did defect to Labour and is a member of the Party, currently suspended (since yesterday).

ScreamingMeMe · 09/03/2022 15:07

Jeremy Corbyn nominated him for a peerage. Oops!

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 09/03/2022 15:26

Huh! QED.

Bercow is a real Jekyll and Hyde character. Which is not a pleasant person to be around, so what follows is in no way an apologia for his vile behaviour.

Bercow was appointed by the Labour Government under Tony Blair to produce a report and recommendations into services for Children with Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN). It was more thorough, influential and had more of a positive impact than anyone reasonably expected at the time. This was in large part due to Bercow not walking away when he had published his Review but continuing to campaign for his recommendations to be actioned.

Bercow: 10 Years On

"Chairing the Review of Services for Children and Young People (0–19) with Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN) 10 years ago was the most stimulating project of my parliamentary career up to that point."
John Bercow, 2018

Bercow: Ten Years On is a report on the state of provision for children’s speech, language and communication needs (SLCN) in England. The report has been published by I CAN , the children’s communication charity, and the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT).

www.bercow10yearson.com/

The irony of the final words in the final paragraph of his foreword to the "10 Years On" report!

"It is my hope that this report will act as a call to action to all those involved in supporting children and young people, to come together and do what is needed to make a difference to the lives of those for whom communication is more difficult."

I say he is a "Jekyll and Hyde character" because I knew several women who were involved in the SLCN Review and none had a bad word to day about him, in fact he was supposedly a delight to work with. I met him once and he was professional, well-informed and courteous. I also wrote to him for assistance on a local matter to do with children's services. He could have fielded this back to my MP, who had been useless, but instead he tried to help as best he could.

It is troubling that his legacy, in the form of the Bercow SLCN Review, will be forever tainted by association with the name of someone who turned out to be such a horrible little monster. It makes it all too convenient for campaigns based on the Bercow Report to be disregarded.

If ever there was a case for "Cancellation" in a good cause, it might be better if his name and endorsement featured rather less prominently in campaigns to improve services to children and young people with Speech, Language and Communication Needs in future.
