Just saw this on P*k News
www.pinknews.co.uk/2018/07/04/speaker-john-bercow-tells-pinknews-reception-2/

Bercow
"There’s still a huge challenge in terms of the trans community. We need to up our level of standing up for the rights of trans people. We shouldn’t allow people to peddle anti-trans messages under the guise of trying to protect other people’s rights. We shouldn’t let people muddy the waters in that way. It’s just not people screaming abuse in the streets – it’s sometimes people who have access to the media and can write articulately, and are using their position to push messages which I think result in very considerable and dangerous displays of hostility to trans people. Up with that we must not put, as Churchill might have said.”

What on earth is he doing? How can a supposedly-independent speaker intervene on something in the middle of the government consultation?

It’s always interesting how the rights of women and children are positioned as being “anti-trans.”

boatyardblues · 05/07/2018 18:16

Worthy of MLK, R0wan. Wine

R0wantrees · 05/07/2018 18:17

I think SwearyG from #ManFriday channels Churchill better...

here from 1:07

I love a Churchill quote and I don't care who knows it, my favourite being

^When you're going through hell keep going.
^
And JB is a fudd.

OlennasWimple · 05/07/2018 18:31

We shouldn’t allow people to peddle anti-trans messages under the guise of trying to protect other people’s rights.

Of course not - who's been doing that though? Not the GC women I hang round with in RL and on SM. Hmm

ErrolTheDragon · 05/07/2018 18:31

Yes, he could do with that postcard.

Here's a Churchill quote for us:

You have enemies? Good. That means you’ve stood up for something, sometime in your life

TimeLady · 05/07/2018 18:40

Most Tories also think he's an odious little man.

Mumsnut · 05/07/2018 18:45

To be on the other side of the question from Bercow is pretty much proof we're right, in my opinion.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 05/07/2018 18:46

Top Churchill quote, Rowan.
John Bercow will never be quoted. He's not worthy to carry Churchill's bricklaying hod.

Stilettosandan0venglove · 05/07/2018 18:55

can write articulately
saying things people can understand
Such dirty tricks!

ErrolTheDragon · 05/07/2018 18:58

I wouldn't say that at all. Any more than people saying we're wrong because our views on particular points may align with other dubious politicians (of any political party).

Still, maybe it'll give the woke dudes pause for thought.

Wanderabout · 05/07/2018 19:01

It’s always interesting how the rights of women and children are positioned as being “anti-trans.”

By which they mean anti-men.

doctorcuntybollocks · 05/07/2018 19:09

It isn't possible for the trans movement to get what it wants and for women and children to still have rights and protections.

VI0LET · 05/07/2018 20:14

Great post Rowantrees

ErrolTheDragon · 05/07/2018 22:51

He obviously needs an anti sexism edit function.

There’s still a huge challenge in terms of equality and protections for half of the population . We need to up our level of standing up for the rights of women. We shouldn’t allow people to peddle misogynistic messages under the guise of trying to protect other people’s rights. We shouldn’t let people muddy the waters in that way. It’s just not people screaming abuse in the streets and assaulting women – it’s sometimes people who have access to the media and can write articulately, and are using their position to push messages which I think result in very considerable and dangerous displays of hostility to women. Up with that we must not put, as Churchill might have said.”

BarrackerBarmer · 05/07/2018 23:08

Translation:
Articulate critical thinkers are making reasonable and compelling factual arguments which are so robust and unassailable that it is increasingly difficult to maintain our layer of fallacious bullshit.

Up with facts we will not put.

SonicVersusGynaephobia · 05/07/2018 23:23

Barracker Grin

doctorcuntybollocks · 05/07/2018 23:27

I'll Keep Buggering On. Also Churchill.

Coyoacan · 06/07/2018 01:44

Ggrrr, so now women are being criticised for being articulate? Certainly not an accusation that can be made against the "men are women" brigade.

ALittleBitofVitriol · 06/07/2018 02:36

Lol, sorry that our arguments are so articulate
Confused

Agrona · 06/07/2018 03:24

Rowantrees.
That quote lifted my spirits. Thank you.

Shampooeeee · 06/07/2018 06:55

How dare he try to use Churchill to shut down opposing arguments.
Knobhead needs a history book.

UpstartCrow · 06/07/2018 06:57

Thanks to Bercow for confirming that trans rights conflict with those of women, and that the Conservatives are aware of this conflict but pushing ahead anyway.

Under his eye.

R0wantrees · 06/07/2018 07:23

"Although the holder of the office of Speaker is required to be politically independent, Bercow has repeatedly spoken up in favour of LGBT equality during his nine years in the role.

He made no exception at the July 4 PinkNews reception in Speaker’s House, giving a “most explicit and unequivocal statement of support” for LGBT rights and PinkNews"
