Seeing as the Spencer wedding thread in S&B was so popular, here's a thread to discuss all royal fashion.

(If we could stick to critiquing the clothes rather than the women wearing them then that would be great!)

Thanks Queen

Love it!

I follow what Kate wore and what Meghan wore on Facebook and they're good at highlighting upcoming events.

Interestingly Bea looked better today when it was all a bit less fussy.

I think Princess Beatrice's style has got significantly better over the last few years, I though she looked beautiful at Ascot at the beginning of the week

Not a fan of Fergie she makes my teeth itch. Though she did look better than she has done previously

I'd not seen that picture but of her. She looks great. Palin dress - quirky hat. One or t'other!

Thank you for making this thread.

I thought Princess Beatrice looked lovely in the dress that she wore today although I didn't like her hat very much. I can understand though that on a very sunny day like today it is nice to have a hat that gives some shade to the face. I do think she is starting to look so much like her mum.

I liked Sarah Ferguson's dress too - navy blue suits her and it was quite understated. I don't see photographs of her very often but judging by today's outfit, and the one she wore at Harry & Meghan's wedding, she has got a lot more stylish as she got older.

Did anyone see the jumpsuit that Sophie wore yesterday. The colour was fab - pale blue with some black detailing on the sleeves. It was nice to see one of the "older" Royals paving the way in the style stakes - this is the first year jumpsuits have been allowed in the Royal enclosure. Tbh though while she was standing still it was quite difficult to tell it was a jumpsuit because the small pleats on the lower half made it look like a skirt. She is turning out to be one of my favourite Royals for her dress sense. Rather like I imagine myself to be if I could afford it (lol).

I have a theory about Beatrice and Eugenie and that's that they are far more into "fashion" than Kate is. She wears what she's advised to wear and isn't that into clothes (she always seems most comfortable in sporty gear or jeans and a Breton) but the York girls take fashion risks and have a lot more fun with their wardrobes. The risks don't always pay off but when they do then they look great. They also chose some genuinely interesting pieces from time to time and usually wear good shoes too.

It could also be a confidence thing. They are princesses of the blood and DGAF what people think of their outfits. Kate maybe plays it safe as she's married into the family and is terrified of getting it wrong.

That's my tuppence worth anyway!

I really like Sophie Wessex style, she dresses to suit her shape & looks really polished, I also liked the black & white dress she had on the other day, had a full skirt & cinched in waist, yy the jump suit I thought it was a pleated dress.

Sarah and Eugenie look so much alike.

I don't know why Beatrice got the blame for the cat flap hat and not PT.

Any links to the jumpsuit?

I don't think Kate has loads of advisors if she does she should sack them! I think she's happiest playing it very safe anyway.

I'd like to know if there was any truth in the story that the queen advised Kate to lower her hemlines etc a few years ago. I assumed not but her outfits never used to be so staid in he early years of her marriage.

I love Bea's white dress and orange/blue hat - so stylish. I think Sophie's style is spot on.

I love Sophie's style. She always looks classy and elegant without looking boring, dull or frumpy. It's tricky after 50 to hit the right note. I love her jumpsuit and she really rocks those amazing hats. Gorgeous.

As I understand it, Queen, Kate likes shorter skirts because she has good legs. Unfortunately, she also favoured light fabrics and flippy hemlines in the early days, and there were some skirt malfunctions. I also heard that Kate was advised to have her hair cut - it is noticeably shorter than it used to be.

With Kate I’ve always wondered if she dresses a bit conservatively to avoid comparisons to Diana who was always seen as such a fashion icon

I have a total style crush on Sophie Wessex- she always looks so polished and her looks are interesting without coming across as try hard which isn’t an easy balance to get right.

I think the DoC doesn’t care much for fashion, and I can’t really blame her as no matter what she wears it attracts criticism. If you look at what she wears, it’s always a version on a boring frock coat and nude heels or a basic column evening dress. She may be very constrained due to dress code, but I think MM has shown that that doesn’t need to be quite so restrictive.

Jump suits have been allowed for a couple of years now in the Royal Enclosure. Sophie Wessex looks perfect most of the time. The York girls spend a lot and try hard. Kate hasn’t been all week.

It’s actually quite nice to see Sarah F allowed back at arms length. First the royal wedding and now Ascot.

The Queen has really become staid in her choices. She’s doing all the bright colours but her hats are exactly the same shape all week. In fact all the time. I would have thought she could ring the changes a bit. Meghan seems hooked on Givenchy. Although the designers a Brit, the House isn’t. Maybe she needs advice on Brit fashion. She was a real plain Jane on Tuesday. Lady Kitty needs to advise her!

Only Kate, Mary and Letizia are through to the next round.

I still like the others' dress sense but it's not royally royal

I love Maxima's style - some of it is a bit out there but she carries it off with aplomb and generally looks fabulous. That ballgown she wore with a cape looked amazing. She seems like a hoot too.

Very very sad about her sister though.

For me, Meghan's top 3 outfits apart from her wedding dress are the McQueen trouser suit, caped Stella McCartney dress and black Wickstead skirt suit she wore to the Memorial Sunday service.

Kate has had some hits too, but mainly in the earlier years of her marriage - the outfits she wore on their first trip to Canada and the Oz/NZ tour. The white Zimmerman dress was great. I also really liked the boho stuff she wore in India, the relaxed vibe really suited her.

I think a lot of the dresses look staid on Kate because she never shows her personality through her clothes and also because of her figure. She just doesn't have any curves and although she has an impressive figure, the clothes just hang off her like they do on a clothes hanger. Added to that, although she is undoubtedly a beautiful woman, she doesn't have striking features - MM's eyes and freckles, York princesses hair colour, Therefore, we always see the dress but we don't see Kate. She becomes almost invisible and only her clothes are discussed. Maybe that is exactly how she likes to play it. I've no doubt she has stylists. Doesn't one of them travel with her when she goes abroad?

Maybe Kate will have a Sophie-like style renaissance in about 10 years time.

Even when she was on the cover of Vogue it was all just jeans and Bretons. But it was Vogue, not Horse & Hound, you'd think it'd be the perfect opportunity to showcase some amazing gowns by British designers!
