I asked a friend if she’s free next weekend on WhatsApp (Tuesday) and she still haven’t even opened the text ... but has been online multiple times.

Yes I know she might be busy. But we’re all busy and it’s hardly a task that takes hours. 2 minutes at most.

If she's on lots of chats then it will have fallen down the list, and she won't see it.

Revive your chat by sending e.g. "oi how about next weekend then?"

PleaseAndThanks · 04/05/2018 18:56

It is rude. And I would probably also assume that you aren’t that important to her in terms of making plans.

Personally, I would find other plans!

clockworklime · 04/05/2018 18:56

...call her? Hmm

MilkyCoffeeAndSkinnySyrup · 04/05/2018 18:57

God this is why I hate social media! Everyone just makes a massive deal about everything.

IronMansIronButt · 04/05/2018 18:58

nobody owes you a response.

Powerglide · 04/05/2018 18:59

nobody owes you a response

Well I bet you’re the life and soul of every party.

A she doesn't owe you a response

B she may not have seen it. I miss texts/messages all the time I'm not being rude I just don't always notice them. If you're that fussed phone her politely to ask.

I think you’re right.

It is whatsapp,

call her, text her, leave an answerphone message - would not rely on whatsapp for any decent level of communication.

melissasummerfield · 04/05/2018 19:00

Whatsapp isnt social media, its a messaging app

UserV · 04/05/2018 19:00

A bit annoying and slightly rude. But why not just PHONE her?!

freddomonster · 04/05/2018 19:01

I often leave messages for a week sometimes because I'm very sleep deprived and genuinely forget most of the time, plus I can't bear the pressure of instant messaging!!

If you respond straight away, they're then pinging one back before you've even left the app! I hate it! Only have it for the sake of keeping relatives happy but I'm probably just old school.

Powerglide · 04/05/2018 19:04

I have some friends I call, and some I don’t.

She’s one I wouldn’t call. We’ve never had that sort of relationship.

SneakyGremlins · 04/05/2018 19:05

Maybe she's not sure if she's free? And other chats are things she has answers to?

gonnabreakmyrustycage · 04/05/2018 19:05

It is a bit rude yes. I would ring her as she might not have seen it or forgotten to reply. If she shows no interest when you call I'd focus on other friends.

gonnabreakmyrustycage · 04/05/2018 19:06

Also evidently "no one owes you a response" but that's what normal people do, answer their friends' messages?

ShawshanksRedemption · 04/05/2018 19:08

If you want to stay friends with her, phone her. If not, let it go and move on.

People sometimes forget, things happen in their lives, it's not necessarily personal.

Powerglide · 04/05/2018 19:10

You’d think so yes. I’d like to think I have enough respect for a friend that I could message them back.
But in the world of MN it’s odd to expect a response.

WakeUpFromYourDreamAndScream · 04/05/2018 19:10

@freddomonster I'm surprised you have any friends if you leave it a week to reply, that's really rude and ignorant

frogsoup · 04/05/2018 19:14

Of course you are owed a reply if you invite somebody Confused. What kind of social inadequate thinks they have no duty of reply if they receive an invitation from a friend?! Ridiculous.

Having said that it's easily doneGrin I wouldn't necessarily take it personally. Just text again to remind her!

Weezol · 04/05/2018 19:15

Either PM or text her the exact same message when you can see she's online. If she doesn't reply to that within 24 hrs, I think she may see you as an aquaintance rather than a friend, sadly.

OpenthePickles · 04/05/2018 19:18

nobody owes you a response

Confused
Petalflowers · 04/05/2018 19:24

Maybe just send her another message, asking whether she saw you earlier message.

thisparachuteisanapsack · 04/05/2018 19:24

On the surface it is rude yes.

However, I admit I do this and it's down to anxiety. I'm usually battling with myself about whether to meet up with the person. Not because I don't like them, but because of how anxious and self conscious it makes me feel to see people. Especially if I've put on weight or something like that too.

GinUser · 04/05/2018 19:25

Perhaps that is why she has not yet replied?
