AIBU not to remove shoes in the home

Generally we don't ask guests to remove their shoes, and my SIL said she doesn't either. We both agreed that when you go to the trouble to put on a nice outfit, it's ruined when you have to take off your footwear. SIL added that as we both have tiled/wooden floors in downstairs room why would you ask guests to, anyway?

And another thing, it's often not nice to be barefoot in someone else's home (at least in your own place you have your own slippers) and I'm aware that some people may feel conscious about smelly feet/odd unsightly feet/verrucas. Even if hosts provide slippers, would you want to wear something that's been worn by someone else?

Yabu. Definitely remove shoes when you enter someone's home. The thought of germ ridden outdoor shoes inside my home makes me ill.

Yabu -it's a hygiene thing

I would never ask guests to remove their shoes - it's really weird imo and unwelcoming.

However, I will remove mine in someone else's house if that's their thing, (even though I will think them prissy and uptight).

No way would I wear 2nd hand slippers though!

Different people have different rules for their homes, no worries if you want to wear shoes at your home! I think wearing shoes inside is pretty minging, personally.

So bring some socks with you then. confused

CheeseQueen Mon 27-Mar-17 00:12:13

When you're visiting, it's basic manners to respect the house rules of te host, surely? Keep your shoes on when visiting us, but if you visit someone who has a no shoe rule in the house then you comply!
As I said, basic manners. Who actually would keep them on regardless?! So rude.

I have a massive scar on my foot. A result of a horrific motorcycle crash when I was younger. I'd be utterly mortified if in order to endure someone's house I would have to take my shoes off.

Yabu I don't understand why anyone would wear shoes in the house, surely they are covered in germs from outside?

Joffmognum Mon 27-Mar-17 00:25:27

user, what if you were wearing socks?

Don't be mortified user just wear socks/opaque tights/take slippers.
Outdoor shoes indoors is dirty

Wearing shoes in the house is revolting.

CactusFred Mon 27-Mar-17 00:29:41

I like people to take shoes off when visiting but if they felt uncomfortable I wouldn't insist.

I home visit people though and in 5 years have only been asked to remove shoes twice. Once for religious reasons and other for posh carpet reasons. I felt really vulnerable without my shoes on in a stranger's house!

MrsCobain Mon 27-Mar-17 00:30:09

I keep a basket of slippers by the door. Always a couple of pairs of new, cheap hotel type ones too if anyone is going to be extra fussy and want new ones. But if you're dirty enough to wear outdoor shoes inside I really don't see why you'd fuss about wearing slippers that have been pre worn.

kimann Mon 27-Mar-17 00:32:18

I don't know anyone who would use shoes in any house. Most of my house is carpeted and I dread to think of the transfers that have happened before - my husband sometimes forgets something upstairs and runs up with his shoes on and I totally freak out. I usually take my shoes off in other people's houses too, I normally have socks/tights on.

Love that there is 2 threads on this with-totally different viewpoints!

Shoes inside is grim. I don't allow it for hygiene reasons but also fed up of people's high heels damaging wood.

Get over your outfit issues.

Yabu-shoes off! Wearing shoes in the house is horrible. I take mine off in everyone's house unless it's actually mingling anyway & they don't bother.

In my house i expect everyone to take shoes off especially as we have cream carpets! Even my two yo says "Shoes off everyone"

WaegukSaram Mon 27-Mar-17 00:41:51

But if you're dirty enough to wear outdoor shoes inside I really don't see why you'd fuss about wearing slippers that have been pre worn.

grin So true!

HeartsTrumpDiamonds Mon 27-Mar-17 00:42:39

Lulabell I don't think that's a coincidence smile

AntiHop Mon 27-Mar-17 00:44:55

Shoes off in my home.

Trainspotting1984 Mon 27-Mar-17 00:48:18

Why is your SILs view so important?

Shoes off here. I wouldn't force anyone but sitting around with your shoes on is fairly grim

Xoticdreamz Mon 27-Mar-17 00:48:25

Just have some repect for the householders wishes and take your shoes off if it's the etiquette in that home .
It's actually really annoying when people visit, see shoes and the fronts door and keep them in . They may have homes that it's okay to keep on but many others don't .

MrsCobain Mon 27-Mar-17 00:56:13

Ds is 3.5 and loudly says 'Mummy says shoes in the house is DISGUSTING.'

I'm always half mortified and half relieved. grin
