Hello! I've signed up for Centre so will join you on here.

I love yoga but haven't been doing it at all recently. I did a lot in the summer but I'm totally out of shape / practice so will be doing all the beginner modifications! I will also be doing it in my PJs before bed. Love this idea.

Thatsasmashingblouseyouvegoton · 30/12/2022 19:59

Back in 2018 I did yoga with adriene every day for 4 months. I felt better, fewer aches and pains and became more agile.
I wish I'd kept it up :(
I'm now 2 stone heavier than I was then :(
Really hoping I keep it up
Is the app worth it?

newmumtotwo24 · 30/12/2022 21:06

Great thanks for the advice. I shall try check out some basic things tomorrow 🤞🏼

daisychain01 · 31/12/2022 06:00

@Thatsasmashingblouseyouvegoton all online yoga teachers do the apps, they run the 30 day challenge as a free intro 'taster' to hopefully get people to buy into the app. Whether or not it's worth it is probably for the person to decide if they want to buy into all that additional content, it does give a lot more variety, but I haven't ever subscribed. Sometimes it's nice to "give back" to your favourite teacher if you want to.

I use YouTube for access to Adriene, Kassandra, Travis Elliot and Fightmaster yoga, they all have their own unique style. Adriene is great if you are new to yoga, but the others always offer adaptations for newbys plus resting in child's pose when it all gets a bit much Grin

They all offer free YouTube sessions and pay-for subscription apps with extra content, which tend to cost around £20/month or £200/year. Adriene has a community called "Find What Feels good".

If I were to have a few spare quid I would possibly opt into their trial (normally they give a 2 weeks "try me before you buy me"), could that be an option for you depending on your budget?

daisychain01 · 31/12/2022 06:03

Sometimes having to pay for the content in the app does give an extra incentive to use the app regularly - a bit like a gym membership, it can languish as the year goes on, but I guess you could put a nag reminder on your mobile.

Count me in! I started Move last January and was loving it, but caught covid half way through, which knocked me for six. I've dipped in and out of yoga through the year, but have had a good pilates practice, however the last few months have been hectic, with starting a new job, and lots of changes, so i've fallen out of routine. I really want to get a routine back in terms of both this year, as I feel so much better when I do yoga and pilates. Can't wait to start this challenge!

misskatamari · 31/12/2022 09:28

Just downloaded the calendar. I love that it doesn't have dates on it, so there's no subconsious feeling of "i'm behind, i've failed" if you don't do a practice every single day in Jan, you can adapt it to you, and follow at your own pace.

flamingogold · 31/12/2022 09:53

I'm going to give this a go so can I join please? I've signed up.

I thought I did it a couple of years ago but realised it was actually about 5 years ago so am much clunkier and fatter now. I really trying to get myself properly fit this year as im doing the London marathon in April to raise money for Cancer Research so I need as much stretching and core as humanly possible!

parrotonmyshoulder · 31/12/2022 09:58

I’ve signed up and would like to join the thread. I’ve done the January 30 days for the last five years and some years continue well into the year. Last year I got covid early Feb and didn’t recover properly till the summer. Never got back into yoga.
I really want to commit again this year as it makes a huge difference to how I feel. I need to prioritise the time as self care.

I really prefer shorter sessions - anything over 24 minutes puts me off! I will try the lymphatic session suggested above later today. I’ve been doing the perfect 10 minute ‘shoulder, neck and upper back’ since Christmas and will do those everyday when I’m back at my desk. Huge difference. Actually incredible.

Shannith · 31/12/2022 10:06

Hi - count me in too - I've kept up daily move ever since I started in Feb. I fell of the threads but carried on with the yoga.

I now much less tentatively describe myself as someone who does yoga. I've had nearly a week off over Christmas and a delightful cold and got back on it today. I could really feel the difference in missing it in the week I had off. My stupid lower back is playing up again. More motivation, not that I need it, to keep my daily practice as sacrosanct.

I can do move like the back of my hand now - never thought I'd say that when I first started and the difference in my mobility is remarkable.

Especially my hips - which are the key for me. I can now hang out in a proper yoga squat! I cannot reiterate how much I could not do that a year ago. Not even close. I thought it was something only young people could do - I'm 47.

So I'll join you on centre- hopefully the next stage in my lovely yoga journey.

Shannith · 31/12/2022 10:13

Hi @happytobemrsg! Nice to see you. I wasn't a total beginner when I started move in Feb but I might as well have been as I quickly realised I was beyond crap and doing most of it wrong.

I wish I'd done some of her beginners videos to start with. I was completely stiff and had no valence at all. Doing a few beginners vids is a great idea.

It took me ohhhhhh about 6 months to really click that the key is really following her breathing cues religiously. Breathing in time with her makes it soooo much easier. I spent the first 6 months desperately trying to keep up and try to do all the moves.

The trick for me really was doing something every day - she reiterates this all the time and I guess she knows what she's talking about!

My ease and flexibility crept up on me - it was rarely boom I can now do it. I can now and I'm still amazed that I can and the huge benefits it's had through my whole life.

Life is easier when you remember to breathe and I now trust my body to do all the things I want it too. Whether that be clambering up on surfaces to put lights up or a bit of dressage.

I might try the free 7 days
Looking forward to getting back into it
I watched the foundation of yoga videos last night too

ScottishBeth · 31/12/2022 14:01

Not long now! So nice to see so many people joining!

@Shannith that is amazing. I've been doing yoga fairly regularly since the middle of October. (Was doing really well until the last couple of weeks, with being ill and my partner being iller, and then Christmas.) I feel a little more flexible, but my core is a lot stronger. I would love to be able to do a yoga squat. Hopefully in a few months!

daisychain01 · 31/12/2022 14:40

I would love to be able to do a yoga squat

That has been my ambition too, for a long time. I've been getting there in very gradual stages, until I can now do the squat for about 30 seconds unaided. I have built up my leg muscles by "sitting" on a yoga block which looks like a squat but with a bit of secret support going on in the background Grin

Rummikub · 31/12/2022 16:38

What’s a yoga squat? Is it feet flat on floor and bum lowered to by ankles? I used to be able to but think my heels lift up now.

BestIsWest · 31/12/2022 16:47

I would also reiterate to newbies what Adrienne herself says - don’t worry about what it looks like - she’s been doing this a long time. I do a LOT of adaptions - my knees don’t bend enough to do a proper squat and I use blocks for downward dog but I still get a huge amount from it.
I’m still recovering from Covid which knocked me for 6 mid December but looking forward to getting going.

BuwchGochGota · 31/12/2022 16:52

I've signed up and am looking forward to starting tomorrow.

I do a weekly yoga class (and a weekly pilates class) but I think doing it every day would be really beneficial.

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 31/12/2022 18:12

I'm another who fell off the yoga wagon in 2022, but climbing back aboard for 2023.

Buttalapasta · 31/12/2022 20:58

I'm in!

froginawell · 31/12/2022 21:16

BuddhaAtSea · 31/12/2022 21:35

happytobemrsg · 01/01/2023 01:01

hoochyhag · 01/01/2023 06:53

Yeay, what a lovely gentle day 0 video.
