Coworker snapped at the dress I'm wearing

I’m wearing a three-quarter length thin white crepe fabric sleeved dress with black ric rac at the bottom. It’s quite sheer, but it’s lined and I’m fine wearing it. It’s boho and vintage. I have thick black tights on with it and black ankle boots. My coworker, who works next door, came in and said, “Aren’t you cold in that”? I said, “No, I’m fine”. She said, “No you’re not”.
Well, I am! I wouldn’t have worn it if I wasn’t OK in it.
The dress is a bit like this:

What I’m really asking is why has what I’m wearing got anything to do with anyone?

Kickoff Ecru Plus Ric Rac Dress

Expertly designed with a split neck and tiered silhouette, the Kickoff Ecru Plus Ric Rac Dress effortlessly combines comfort and style. The short sleeves and black ric rac trim add a touch of elegance to this versatile dress, making it perfect for any...

What are others wearing?

Artisan always make me think of pretentious bread misses point of thread

Did they snap or just make an observation? Bit annoying when they tell you how you are feeling - i.e. cold - though.

Looks like something I’d wear by the pool but if that’s fine in your office then you crack on to be fair.

I once accidentally went to work dressed as a hobbit, I didn’t mean to. Grey jersey dress, wide tan belt and boots. Thought I looked the nuts. Got home and as I looked in the mirror to undress I realised I looked like an extra from Lord of the Rings. Sigh.

And the Artisan Slippers thread

In your own time - dress however you like.
At work (thinking my workplace) - at the very least - dress it up with a jacket/cardigan/blazer and thick tights underneath (which you had).
Short and floaty doesn't work well in an office setting - I think

In general it's more beachy than office. But that will depend on where you work.

Oh I missed that one - will look!

Never post about office wear here @user1471867483

You will be directed to look like a secretary who shopped at Next in the 90s. Office wear is vastly different in nearly all places now, much less formal/dull/prescriptive/old fashioned.

User645262 · 03/10/2024 08:45

Bohemia is actually a culture originating from Roma people in Central Europe. Real bohemian fashion contains geometric designs, heavy jewellery and various nomadic touches. That dress isn't boho at all but flimsy beachwear popularised by Instagram influencers and fast fashion stores.

DoYouReally · 03/10/2024 08:43

It's not appropriate work wear unless your job is at the side of a marina selling boat trips.

😂With a bottle of Ouzo to entice holiday makers with a friendly shot or two?!

Well, because they can see you.

Just laugh and say well just as well it's me wearing it not you then isn't it, and crack on with your day.

Oh I missed that one - will look!

I'm not sure what its actual title was but it was hilarious

HangDai · 03/10/2024 08:46

Depends what type of office you work in.

Our CEO wears dungarees and flip flops, and the analysts pretty much wear trackies or leggings, so it's all dependent on your work environment.

MeMyCatsAndI · 03/10/2024 08:48

Maybe her way of saying it's more beach wear than work wear and you need to keep that in mind without being nasty.

Dress is fine, although if I had to work next to someone who described themselves as "way out" and "folksie", I'd have a headache.

Same here!
''Way out''?

Folksie?

Lentil~ farty hippie springs to mind.

Ohthatsabitshit · 03/10/2024 08:51

She tried to tell you it was (in her opinion) inappropriate office wear. Only you know if that would be because she’s trying to help you or just an opinionated arse. She doubled down on what she said by “snapping” back No you’re not because she felt you didn’t receive what she was trying to tell you. Perhaps she’s used to people being a bit more receptive or perhaps she really had to push herself to make the comment.

JingsMahBucket · 03/10/2024 08:52

Why is everyone being so mean and snide to the OP?

oakleaffy · 03/10/2024 08:52

Is this the same as ''Snapped and farted?''

cheezncrackers · 03/10/2024 08:53

I think the dress is pretty, but it's totally inappropriate for work, tights and boots or not. I'd wear that on holiday in a hot country.

ClairDeLaLune · 03/10/2024 08:53

Good grief! Let’s all stamp on someone who’s a bit different and try to make her as boring as the rest of us. OP I’m an actuary, the dullest profession going, and when I was younger I’d have worn something like that. You be you and ignore the haters.

Questions though: why are that model’s teeth so white? And why is she holding a sparkly mop??

JingsMahBucket · 03/10/2024 08:52

Why is everyone being so mean and snide to the OP?

Because this is Mumsnet and a large number of people on here get their kicks out of putting others down. Try to have sympathy for them, they must have sad little lives. Thoughts and prayers to them.

oakleaffy · 03/10/2024 08:55

It reminds me of 'Nuts in May'

Don't forget "unique".

itwasnevermine · 03/10/2024 08:55

I'm 25, i work in a solicitors office and I wouldn't ever wear that to work, it's not so much the sheer fabric but the length and style. It's just not appropriate for work

MyBirthdayMonth · 03/10/2024 08:55

It would be nice for playing tennis in.

theDudesmummy · 03/10/2024 08:55

I am afraid I would think you forgot to put your trousers on
