Yes I paid tax then as I was working employed as well as self employed then

Last year is the only year where I will have been under the threshold for tax, and I will go over it again this year

I think the current cut-off for paying tax is £12,500, which without the SIESS grant I would be below this year. Last year with the drop in DICT8 work towards the end of the year (Christmas onwards) I was close to going below the threshold. This year my earnings are much less, but with the grant being classed as earnings and needing to be added in it will bring it up again to over the threshold.

As I am under the new retirement age I still have to pay NI which is collected at the same time, which makes it a bit harder to judge which is tax and which is NI.

Gally123 · 05/12/2020 11:33

you only get a tax refund if you have overpaid tax - ie many years ago as students we worked full time over the summer months and paid tax for those few weeks, which could be reclaimed at the end of the year.

Chrissols · 05/12/2020 14:14

@Gally123 thank, that is how I understood it to work.

danblack87 · 05/12/2020 14:33

I think Gally and Chrissols I will be just below threshold (including the one SEISS grant I claimed). I am abunt about to claim the next grant though (but of course that will against next year's tax).

Chrissols · 05/12/2020 14:45

At least work is picking up now, albeit I haven't see any today, but that's the norm for me at weekends even pre pandemic. Weekdays are getting really busy though 😀😀

OP posts:
Gally123 · 05/12/2020 15:06

@Chrissols-I found last week that some days it picked up but not everyday - and the quality of some of the dictation was very poor; too quiet to hear clearly mainly but also a lot of background noise/chatter.

Chrissols · 05/12/2020 15:12

@Gally123 yes I agree with that, I got one where the man was clearly eating his lunch......disgusting

OP posts:
Meha5 · 07/12/2020 20:21

@Chrissols, OMG I hate it when there is chomping or slurping on the task and I always need to rewind back to that exact place 😂🤣 I used to have a doctor that ate all the way through a clinic, made me feel sick !!!

Another pet hate - sniffing constantly 🤣🤣

Chrissols · 08/12/2020 09:14

@Meha5, yes the sniffing is another. I actually had one the other day where it sounding like they were literally dropping off to sleep.....

OP posts:
Gally123 · 08/12/2020 09:32

I hate people who cough directly into the microphone. Yawning and trying to talk at the same time is another pet hate.

Why do some people have such bad manners and be so inconsiderate of others? Is it because they cannot see the people who are typing their letters (and we cannot see them)? I am sure they must be more considerate with their secretaries. (I once spoke a little sharply to one of my consultants when he decided to eat his lunch and sign his letters at the same time - I did not want crumbs all over my letters, I told him. He was duly careful).

Chrissols · 08/12/2020 09:46

I'd like to think it is because they cannot see us and do not know us (even so, this is no excuse), but I honestly think most of them think their secretaries are doing all the typing

OP posts:
Meha5 · 08/12/2020 11:43

when they belch a word too 🤢 and one task I did a few months ago I swear the person passed wind, I could hear him stifle a laugh 🤣🤣

Gally123 · 08/12/2020 11:57

@Meha5, yes had to be a "him"

deewu · 10/12/2020 15:12

I have just typed a letter where the female clinician must have been in the toilet as there was a loud gush of water which sounded just like a flushing toilet!

Chrissols · 10/12/2020 15:50

@deewu thank goodness it was only the flush you heard 🤣🤣🧻🧻🚽🚽

I haven't been able to do any work today due to wifi problems. Just looked now.......82 tasks..........hope this is here to stay

Whitestar5 · 10/12/2020 18:53

Yes there does seem to be more work available, much of it is poor quality though. Does anyone else find this job sooooo gruelling, tiring and monotonous or is it just me? I'm sort of grateful for it in the current climate, but I can't say it's doing much for my mental health or finances!!

Gally123 · 10/12/2020 20:09

@Whitestar5 - I find the poor quality depressing - that the doctors (mainly, a few nurses) think so poorly of their secretaries - and us - that they cannot be bothered to speak clearly, with minimal background noise etc. I have had some truly dreadful ones today - one lady so quiet she sounded so far away from the microphone and another was in a room so noisy I could hear several other conversations more clearly.

I find the dictation with T-Pro much clearer on the whole. I have so far encountered only one whisperer and rarely get a paper rustle. One lady yawned but stopped speaking. The main drawback is the lower rate of pay.

Chrissols · 10/12/2020 20:36

I actually find Tpro pays more as it is possible to get through the work much quicker, I just prefer Dict8

Poppy379 · 11/12/2020 09:42

I'm not really seeing the increase in work and still have a very poor throughput. To see 82 tasks come up would be utterly amazing!! Xmas Smile

Chrissols · 11/12/2020 10:11

There were still 35 left this morning......managed to grab a long one, but there are none left now........

danblack87 · 11/12/2020 15:50

HI all - I have not worked all week (D&V/dizziness/prolonged headache of no known cause) so just reading through what people have been saying. I will recommence typing next week now I feel more'ish like a human. Hope all are safe.

Whitestar5 · 11/12/2020 16:27

@danblack87 Hope you feel better soon. If only we got a decent enough pay to cover sick time.
