Looking for people from the previous thread that closed as must of been full?

@Whitestar5 - previously when people have queried this with DICT8 when the level of available tasks was low DICT8 had said that proofreaders do not type. This was one of the reasons why it was odd when the woman on the other strand claimed to be a typist and a proofreader. One of the secretaries ay my local hospital had previously worked as a proofreader in London and another had an application form for such work and it was a full time position in their office. Of course things do change.
@danblack87, yes, hope today is better for you.

Chrissols · 27/11/2020 11:53

Maybe some proofreaders have been furloughed? I have been getting the usual 'thank you for your great work', in fact more than usual which is strange.

@Gally123, Thanks for the interesting information on proofreading, as you said things can change. The woman on the other thread (the one with superpowers I'm assuming lol) has been quiet recently too, maybe she's not discovered this thread.

@Chrissols Would be nice to be furloughed if employed wouldn't it.

@danblack87 Hope you have a better day today.

Chrissols · 27/11/2020 14:04

Quietest day for a long time for me today

danblack87 · 28/11/2020 10:44

@Whitestar5: I had a good day yesterday thank you.

Gally123 · 01/12/2020 18:46

I posted my invoice this morning and as I normally do I used a first class stamp, however I have just read these are going up 9p in January to 85p (not in March as is usual for the price rises) and second class stamps are going up by 1p.

I might think about using second class stamps in future - which stamps do other people use? (I know we would like to be able to email our invoices in...)

Meha5 · 01/12/2020 19:00

@danblack87 - know the feeling thought things would be over with after lockdown but we are in tier 3 as well so I feel your pain - brought me down a bit for a few days too ☹

flutterby18 · 02/12/2020 10:34

@Gally123

Hi Gally123 - I use first class stamps. You could always buy more now if you can afford to before the increase as they will still be valid, which is what I intend to do.

Gally123 · 02/12/2020 10:50

@flutterby18 - I normally buy a year's worth of first class stamps for my invoices in March when they announce the annual price rises so will be buying earlier this year I suppose. I know I can take it off my tax as expenses when I do the dreaded form but it just seems a huge rise so next year I might use second class instead. After all there seems to be little difference in the delivery times and DICT8 do not process our invoices any quicker.

flutterby18 · 02/12/2020 10:55

@Gally123

I heard a while ago, (not sure if it is true) that Dict8 process the invoices in two batches depending on time received so you may have a point. I may also try second class from next year and see if there is any difference.

danblack87 · 02/12/2020 12:00

@Gally123: I have used both 1st and 2nd class over the last year and found no difference in processing of my invoices so I will be buying a book of 24/48 2nd class stamps in January!

danblack87 · 02/12/2020 12:01

I offset my stamps, paper and envelopes + ink to tax too.

Gally123 · 02/12/2020 12:08

@danblack87 - I used to go to the library to print my invoices so put those costs on my tax (sometimes had to push for a receipt though as one 'assistant' claimed not to have had any training on the till despite the instructions for printing receipts stuck on there after previous problems) and also the bus fare. When lockdown struck my sister printed a couple of times for me and then I bought a printer so that has gone on my tax form as well (or 50% as I know they like to assume that people use such items for personal use, letters, photos etc as well).

Gally123 · 02/12/2020 12:10

@danblack87 - you need to buy your stamps in December as the price rise is 1 January 2021

Chrissols · 02/12/2020 13:00

@danblack is it stated you can only offset 50% of your printer? I am interested as I had to buy a new computer this year and am going to offset that, and I do only use my computer for work as I use my Ipad for anything personal.

OP posts:
danblack87 · 02/12/2020 13:24

@Chrissols: It is a long time since I bought my printer - but the whole amount of the printer was put in my tax return (tax advisor does it for me) so I am not sure what % return I got. Ink is a functional requirement for the printer and I do not use it at all outside of my employed work so printer ink is essential (as are paper, stamps and envelopes - I only use them for dictate). I had to buy a laptop 2-3 years ago and I also offset that to tax (again I do not know the percentage reimbursed); however, as self-employed working from home solely I had to move from my 'cupboard' (with no window, adequate lighting, adequate room, etc on health grounds and I had no issue with placing that on my tax return either for rebuilding a desk etc and decorating. I was told just put in what you have spent HMRC will evaluate and decide what to offset. So that is what I did. However, I now only work for Dict8, so not too much offset goes towards tax reduction. Hope that is sort of helpful.

danblack87 · 02/12/2020 13:26

Any technological problems, costing me to call out a 'man/woman' to fix it, I also offset - Fingers' x'd that has not occurred for 2/3 years either!!!

Gally123 · 02/12/2020 14:49

@Chrissols - I mentioned 50% for the printer as that it what the tax people like to say from what I have heard - but if you can prove something is purely 100% for work then claim it. My sister worked as a nanny for people who played in an orchestra and needed black dress/suit to wear and claimed the price of that on their tax forms, only to be told that the clothes were possible to wear for other occasions and hence only 50% of the claim was allowed. I am not sure how things will go now with so many people working from home and having to claim for various expenses.

Whitestar5 · 02/12/2020 18:16

You mean some of you actually earn enough to pay tax? Wow! haha

Chrissols · 02/12/2020 19:51

@Gally123 yes that makes sense.....will just put it down and see what happens.

OP posts:
danblack87 · 04/12/2020 12:59

Last year (that is 2018 -2019) my tax bill was minimal as I did not earn a huge amount!! This year (2019 - 2020) I am not expecting to pay anything as I definitely have not earnt as much as the previous year (maybe a tax refund Shock)!

Chrissols · 04/12/2020 13:26

@danblack87 I am not expecting to pay anything but don't think I will get a refund as I haven't paid any tax to start with to get refunded 😂😂

OP posts:
danblack87 · 04/12/2020 13:29

@Chrissols: I am not sure what you are saying there. You are allowed to earn xx amount before tax so if you don't reach the threshold surely you will get an allowance? I think @Galley 123 understands these things better than I Confused x

Chrissols · 04/12/2020 13:32

@danblack87 my understanding was you can only get a tax rebate from tax you have already pain, hence it being a rebate - it would be great if I am wrong though

OP posts:
danblack87 · 04/12/2020 13:43

Did you not pay tax 2018-2019 or 2017-2018?
