Welcome to any women who want the company of women!

Thats it really….ok so this place is staffed by gerbils with the occasional quokka or capybara but it functions like a friendly pub where you don’t have to know what’s going on all the time.
The drinks don’t intoxicate and the food is delicious yet healthy so please do come in.

I don't really like Christmas cake. Only palatable with some Wesleydale cheese.

See, I love cheese but I'm not wild on Wensleydale. I find it a bit...dry?

I'll have yours.

I bloody love a proper Christmas cake, including the marzipan and icing. I usually soak the fruit in sloe gin before I make the cake.

YES! I also soak the fruit in sloe gin.
I am one of those people who clanks guilty out of the supermarket during sloe season with litres of gin and no tonic.

I'll have everybody's almond icing, but you can keep the Christmas cake - quite a lot of bargaining and bartering over the Christmas dinner table when I'm around😄

I'm with you Marie. Can't stand fruitcake but very happy to save people from any unwanted marzipan.

I find it too sharp. One of those little quirks of nature means that organic acids give me hot flushes (technically that's more hot flushes, of course). Detracts from the enjoyment quite a lot.

Let's never be at the same table for Christmas - imagine the fights over the unwanted marzipan😬

Anybody seen the players in the snooker final? This reminds me of the young lad's hairstyle😄

This made me laugh out loud

Hedgehogforshort · 04/05/2026 21:50

As for Christmas cake and marzipan yeuk

If we have cheeseboards here, I'll swap you for your Stilton?

I once went to the checkout in Waitrose with several litres of gin with which to make sloe gin. It was quite early in the day so I joked "That's breakfast sorted" to the cashier. He looked quite alarmed Grin

I like fruitcake but not keen on marzipan. Almonds are better crunchy - it’s too long since I’ve had Dundee cake.
Wenslydale is one of the few cheeses I’m not keen on, I agree it’s too acidic.

I make a mean Dundee cake, @ErrolTheDragon - come for a visit and I’ll bake one - and lace it with the best whisky!

Magpiecomplex · 04/05/2026 22:15

My DD for me some of those for Xmas this year - they’re delicious.😀

As is Woley’s cake I should think.

I see he won, they'll all have hairstyles like that next year!

Crikey, that must have been a long sleep. Is it Christmas again already?

MyrtleLion · 05/05/2026 09:56

No marzipan but fruit cake and Christmas pudding are favourites. I get a whole one to myself.

Dextersgoneovertherainbowbridge · 05/05/2026 11:01

I adore marzipan. Especially around a Battenberg cake.

Dextersgoneovertherainbowbridge · 05/05/2026 11:02

Do the gerbils like marzipan, do you think?
and can you still get those little marzipan fruits?

I think it's gerbils who make those little marzipan fruits, Dex, they are such a gerbilian concept - things that are life-sized and heathy made into something small and sweet.
But of course, the ones consumed in the Bluestocking magically retain all the vitamins etc of the original fruits😄

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 05/05/2026 12:09

I make my own marzipan, each Christmas. I used to follow the blessed St Delia’s recipe, which involved whisking eggs and sugar over simmering water for 10 minutes, then cooling it before adding the almonds, but that was such a major faff that I decided to try just whisking the eggs and sugar, then adding the almonds etc, and it tastes exactly the same, and I don’t have to stand over the stove for ages. I probably won’t go to heaven, though - not if Delia has anything to say about it! 😂😇

Do the gerbils like marzipan?!

Over at Woolly Hugs HQ, Maud's Battenburg was served sans marzipan because she'd eaten it all.

It looks rather like the Battenburg was disassembled and reassembled, to facilitate marzipan collection!

Hopefully it’s a scurrilous rumour that Maud considered trying to hide her marzipan pilfering by coating the remaining cake with an egg, flour and milk paste and frying it, but wisely decided that a Batteredburg cake wouldn’t be very nice.
