Did anyone else go to the exhibition of women artists at Tate Britain a few years ago?

I loved it. There was a very different feel & it was astonishing how many more of the women in the paintings had clothes on.

I saw a sign just now that appeared to say “Ferret Carriers Only.” When I got closer it was “Permit Carriers Only.” Not nearly so good.

I think I missed that one, unfortunately. Now, where's that quote when you need it, you know, the one about numbers of male artists and numbers of female nudes?

Found it: Guerilla Girls, 1989

"Less than 5% of the artists in the Modern Art Sections are women, but 85% of the nudes are female."

This my absolute favourite self portrait by a woman, Elisabeth Vigée LeBrun.
She looks so human, in a time (18th century) when most portraits were stiff, staid and about showing off. I want Elisabeth to be my friend.

Oooooooo! She could join my Fridge Council Of Women!

I have portraits to consult when I need to know what to do. It's marvellous.

My favourite self portraits are both Gentileschi - as Catherine of Alexandria and the Allegory self portrait

I told you, it's the Matrix! I'm completely convinced now, too many coincidences.

Does this mean that all we have to do is take the red pill, and the world will return to normal again, and we can have all our words and spaces back?

Only if the red pill gets it red colour from cochineal

Yes!!! The best exhibition I've seen, I think. I took masses of photos to remind me of it. Absolutely astonishing (plus two Gentileschi at the start - swoon)

FuzzyPuffling · 29/04/2026 17:48

@PastaAllaNorma I love your fridge and am delighted to see a puffin in flight featured. Is it me?

PastaAllaNorma · 29/04/2026 17:49

Here's one from that exhibition - and embroidery self portrait of herself doing a portrait. Mary Linwood did portraits of both the King and Napoleon

I wonder how one gets a ferret into a carrier? Would they have to reverse in?

Chersfrozenface · 29/04/2026 17:51

I took my daughter to the Artemisia Gentileschi exhibition at the National Gallery. We just managed to get in between lockdowns.

She bought her own copy of the catalogue. She never buys catalogues.

I wouldn't be so presumptuous! Let's say it's in honour of you.

Boily, it can't be your fridge, your fridg isn't covered with art postcards and souvenir fridge magnets!

Magpiecomplex · 29/04/2026 17:54

My fridge and dishwasher are channeling The Prisoner. Fridge claims it is not a number, and dishwasher asserts it is a free man. Junior Master Magpie's doing.

That's because I took them all off to clean the outside of the fridge this morning.

The lectures we watched on the history of Impressionism before our recent trip to Paris included a fair bit about two women Impressionists Berthe Morisot and Mary Cassatt and the differences in their subjects vs the men. No nudes for sure!

Ermines are ferrets, right? So she'd have got in no prob.😄

Scaffolding stairs sound no fun, Myrtle. Were they a bit rickety?

It was terrifying. And this was before my broken leg and subsequent mobility issues.

Boiledbeetle · 29/04/2026 18:39

Sat here scrolling Mumsnet, cat jumps up on chair, I say "hello", cat says "hello" back.

I checked the living room camera and yes she actually said hello! I do wish we could post sound clips!

ErrolTheDragon · 29/04/2026 18:40

Damn… the app was playing up, I thought I’d c&pd what I was trying to write before adding the link…which makes no sense because I lost the second paragraph. This was about how some artists can paint the sheen on silks so it looks realistic from a distance but close up its broad brushstrokes. My example is a painting by Dame Laura Knight I came across on this board and to my delight found was in my local museum.

MyrtleLion · 29/04/2026 18:40

I have many of the same postcards and magnets.

@AngleofRepose, Gosie texted me to say she could pop into the Bluestocking this evening if you want; she's on her way past... But also says she was sure you'd work it out. Something about the back stairs up past the library (watch out for the flying squirrel librarians) and then down again using the steps behind the 14th bookcase on the left (feminism from the mid 16th century - Marie's complete works are there).

Apparently the hatch that used to be opens up around there...
