Come in. Yes, you’re in the right place. No, you don’t need to explain yourself.

Coats will be drycleaned before you depart. Bags won't be stolen because Gubbins will play her triangle. And you really don't want to hear it.

The gerbils run the bar.
They are small, brisk, and unionised.
One is polishing a glass with unnecessary seriousness.
Another is keeping the tab and will remember what you ordered last time.
There is a triangle involved. No one knows why. It keeps Gubbins happy.

Sit. Think. Drink. Join in.

The gerbils have it from here.

Ah, fair enough.
We were skint, and cocoa was a bit of a treat.

I gather lactose intolerance is a bit of a bugger.

It's eased off a lot because I changed my diet and added more fermented foods, but at its peak it was brutal and would need to leave meetings suddenly.

Hot choc not cocoa, made with 3/4 water and 1/4 topped up with full fat milk does me nicelySmile
Thank you for the new thread, Deano, I have to go and investigate the Maureen Potter song! I promise I'll come back till this thread is full.

She was a star of my childhood, she starred in the panto every year at the Gaiety theatre; there was a different one in the Royal Theatre, we went to both, but Maureen Potter's was magic.
And also, as you say Deano, capable of surprising everyone in 'straight' roles, and a wonderful singer and dancer.

The heart and soul of Dublin wit and talent and mischief.

Is anyone else getting adverts for Sainsbury's single ripe papaya? I keep thinking it's an avocado as I scroll past, and then realising it isn't. Not sure why Sainsbury's think I want a papaya, I haven't bought one since the younger offspring was weaning!

Nope, but for some reason I was getting adverts in Dutch about the HPV vaccine the other day.

  1. I am not Dutch, and do not speak more than a smattering
  2. I am well outside the HPV vacc age-range.

I’ve been having a spoonful of cocoa blended with a bit of hot water, then adding a short decaf coffee made with the aeropress, quite a lot of whole milk and then microwaved to get it hot enough. I keep meaning to try spices such as cardamom with it, or in my morning coffee.

ErrolTheDragon · 22/02/2026 18:01

Meanwhile, I was out hacking down some of my excessive amounts of dogwood till 5:30. Lots more to do but I’ve got rid of the stems which had grown up into the silver birch. It’s very satisfying cutting down huge amounts and then managing to get it all into the brown bin, bar the main stems which go onto the dead wood ‘habitat’ pile.

I've been wondering about an aeropress for a while. Should I buy one?

AuntieMsDamsonCrumble · 22/02/2026 18:07

Great sunset, Errol. I've just been admiring it from the seafront, but didn't take a photo.

MarieDeGournay · 22/02/2026 18:08

Deano, I've listened to Maureen Potter singing, and ah the memories....Smile
Clever of you to think of that song, with its cocoa and cocktails and champagne, perfect for the Bluey!

There's a reference to 'Mrs Mulligan' who you will recognise as Biddie Mulligan, the pride of the Coombe, but I think there's probably been enough Dublin nostalgia here already.

Co-incidentally, I am unfortunately missing a book launch I was invited to today [still not very mobile, though a lot better than I was]

The Outsiders Who Built Irish Entertainment: Maurice and Louis Elliman
by Wendy Elliman.
Poor immigrants fleeing antisemitic persecution in Russia [I think it was Russia - I must buy the book!], the Elliman family became mainstays of the entertainment industry in Ireland and esp. Dublin, and they owned the theatres where Maureen Potter, and the other greats, performed over the decades, and some of the first cinemas in Ireland.

They brought so much light and colour and joy to what was then an impoverished country, I wish I could have thanked Wendy Elliman todaySmile

we find it good - we didn’t want a fancy machine taking up space. Though we do also have a good burr grinder and a milk frother jug.

I'm mostly thinking for at work. I have a stovetop espresso maker at home which I'm very fond of. I'm the only one who drinks coffee regularly at work and I have a one cup filter thingie but it's quite slow and sometimes I forget about it and then it's cold by the time I remember. An aeropress would solve that problem and they get good reviews. Might need a grinder as well.

It's gone a bit quiet in the Bluestocking and I can't hear any gerbils squeaking. Have the capybaras shipped them across to the new thread already?

The gerbils, capybaras, The Big Wombat, etc etc have about 7 or 8 more posts to go before we hit 1,000.

I hear that distinctive ripping sound of packing tape being taken off the roll, and boxes being piled up by the door ready for transporting.
None of them is labelled 'Tunnocks Stash', but.. <taps side of nose>

Time to remind those who haven't popped in for a while that we'll be at
The Bluestocking Inn, cocktails and cocoa and all | Mumsnet
so come and join us again soon, old and new Stockingers are always welcome
