The Bluestocking Women’s Pub: Where Clever Women Sit and Think, While Gerbils Run the Bar.

Come in. Yes, you’re in the right place. No, you don’t need to explain yourself.

Coats will be drycleaned before you depart. Bags won't be stolen because Gubbins will play her triangle. And you really don't want to hear it.

The gerbils run the bar.
They are small, brisk, and unionised.
One is polishing a glass with unnecessary seriousness.
Another is keeping the tab and will remember what you ordered last time.
There is a triangle involved. No one knows why. It keeps Gubbins happy.

Sit. Think. Drink. Join in.

The gerbils have it from here.

Do you mean deletions from the Bluey thread??? I don't recall ever seeing that happen.
I'm carefully avoiding the thread that '1pw of the brass neck' has apparently taken over now.😒

Yes, and more than one.
Wave to the lurkers everyone...

FuzzyPuffling · 22/02/2026 15:06

I have had one or two affirmations from lurkers in the Bluey.

Waves to the happy lurkers too!

The gerbil spies! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

I absolutely howled with laughter when I read Damson's post, Too late, they've already held their first meeting.

Ladies, you have surpassed yourselves! 💙

Using the calendar on my iPhone/ipad has been a game changer for me, notifications come up on my watch. I can also see DHs now but he’s not figured out how to accept my invitation for him to see mine yet so we’re not quite fully synced yet.

I admit that I've tried and failed to do this. I do, however, set alarms on my iPhone.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 22/02/2026 15:38

@AsWithGlad - I rather like the Tudor attitude to Lent, where Henry VIII had ducks, geese and swans reclassified as fish, so he could eat them during Lent. Not that I fancy eating swan, but I could reclassify chocolate as a vegetable, and then eating it during Lent would be a virtue.

Britinme · 22/02/2026 15:39

Thank you so much @MarieDeGournay! It feels wonderful to be appreciated and I’m glad my curmudgeonly publisher finally got it into print and sent it.

I do the interrupting thing. I try so hard not to and keep apologising for it. I fake eye contact when I remember.

I was diagnosed with OCD in my 30s. A cousin's son was diagnosed with Asperger's and ADHD and that then made so much sense of our family...

As I progressed in my school career, I met more and more pupils with ASD and I'd find myself recognising my teenage self in them. For whatever reason, the bairns with ASD seemed to get on okay with me.

Mind you, there was that time that the parents asked staff not to encourage their son's interest in Doctor Who...Last I heard, said laddie was doing a degree in Astronomy at Edinburgh Uni.

Then there was the time I bumped into another former pupil at ComicCon in Kirkcaldy...He's now in his 30s. We're FB friends now and I get pics of him in his Doctor Who cosplay.

Particularly now that I'm retired, I have to write all appointments etc down in a wee diary...Problem is that I keep misplacing it.

I was okay at keeping on top of things for other people - at work, for my parents, my husband - but don't seem so good at doing it for myself. Even now I can't decide whether I'm shamming or not, but reading about it all has helped me make sense of myself.

A couple of years ago, I was at the osteopath's and had gone off at a tangent about something. She: "I hope you don't mind my asking, but are you by any chance on the spectrum and do you have ADHD?"

Turns out that both her children have diagnoses. Then, with a grin: "Do you like science fiction?"

Right. I'll stop blethering now.

My therapist diagnosed me. I finally got round to talking to my GP who.said do Right to Choose. Probably weeks ago. And I haven't been able to do it... Because of ADHD...😔

Thank you Myrtle. I'm very new to creating images with AI and have had a few fails, but I was quite proud of that one!

I'm with you on the cutlery Edith. I have an "heirloom" set and an everyday set, but my favourites are the knife/fork/spoon I bought from Sainsbury's when I realised that I had taken a picnic salad for a journey and had no cutlery to eat it with!

I'm not sure whether I ought to admit that I am meticulous about using the same style and colour of pegs for each item I hang on the line. No mix and match for me........

Great to hear @Britinme that your book of poems is becoming famous on both sides of the Atlantic 👏👏👏

And I also use alarms and my calendar a lot. I forgot to put a meeting in the calendars and was thrilled it ended up being cancelled because something else was there instead. If it's not in my phone, it's not happening.

I have alarms to take tablets and when to get up and when to leave. And every event that I have to travelfor is written as Event (time it starts) in the subject line with the time to leave as the actual start time. Otherwise I get confused with travel time and appointment time. Eg. I have an appointment at 10am tomorrow. So it says Appointment (1000) and the start time is 0900 so I have time to drive there.

Thank you all for your lovely messages. I'm still obsessively watching Motorway Cops. Series 1, 2, 5, and 8 have been watched and also all broadcast episodes so far of series 9 as well as the first four episodes of Series 3.

Basically if they haven't got insurance on their car, they have probably taken cannabis and/or cocaine and have no licence or MOT. One chap yelled at a traffic cop that was dealing with an incident. The cop ran his plates and by the time they'd found him and pulled him over, he'd lost his licence and had his car seized for all of the above.

If you are going to be a traffic criminal, drive properly and tell the truth and say sorry if you're pulled over because it goes much easier that way.

What happened to the other series, @MyrtleLion?
Watching out of sequence, even something where it makes no difference, would be very irritating for me! But then, I was coming here to comment that while I don't have ADHD, I almost certainly have high functioning ASD. Like Edith, I've spent years teaching myself how to work with and around it.

It's to do with our TV box. Episodes from series 5, 8 and 9 were taking up recording space on the TV so I watched them first and could delete them. Then I started at Series 1 in order.

Interestingly the first three series are set in Cheshire so I haven't missed anything. Series 8 and 9 are Humberside and Series 5 is Northumbria. And to be honest, they're all very formulaic, so once you've seen one you've seen most of them. Very little follow up (if any) in later episodes. They put up boxes with the outcomes for everyone who is stopped.

I don't have ADHD (at least I am pretty sure I don't) but I have alarms and alerts for every single thing in my life, @MyrtleLion . I find it much more relaxing when I can outsource my thinking to my phone.

Pills, appointments, swap HRT patch, plans to see friends, prompts to talk to DP or the kids about something, 2 days notice to buy and send birthday cards - the whole thing.

Gerbils, a large and consoling cocktail for me, please, as my team lost our second hockey gold to the Americans in this Olympics.

MyrtleLion · 22/02/2026 16:16

I would have sworn I was ASD rather than ADHD (though I'm probably both) because I'm hyper focused, but ny therapist also has ADHD (and aphantasia whereas I can practically pull an imaginary apple off a tree) and she asked me some relevant questions. I did some research and I don't think she's wrong.

In not only rely on tech to remind me about things, but because I sometimes 'lose' words, I find Google really useful - I put in some words that relate to the word I've 'lost', and 9 times out of 10 Google produces exactly what my brain can'tSmile
It's useful for checking that the word my brain has come up means what I want it to mean.
Really helpful!

lcakethereforeIam · 22/02/2026 16:25

I don't think I'm on the spectrum but I am quite introverted. Although that's changed a bit. There's some things idgaf about nowadays, one of the benefits of getting older. However, if I couldn't weasel out of it, I'd always be the chatty one at work Christmas/birthday meals or at weddings. As hard as it was to talk up, in my mind it was much, much worse to sit there in a awkward silence.

Trying to remember the word, the perfect word, that's just on the tip of your...brain is wossname annoying.

I'll always be grateful to Terry Pratchet for 'wossname'.

Beans are very healthy, it says in many places.

And what is chocolate made from?

Hot chocolate/ cocoa made from only milk and cocoa powder must be very healthy because you’re adding protein and lots of vitamins and minerals.

You’re adding sugar? If it’s East Anglian sugar it’s made from sugar beet. I’m sure beets are a healthy veg.

I have good news, well it was news to me.
It can be part of the joyous bundle of experiences which come with menopause. The thing that surprised me was it starts to get better afterwards. It wasn’t a permanent part of ageing.
Until you get Long Covid, that is.

DeanElderberry · 22/02/2026 16:48

I don't add sugar to my cocoa, but do add black pepper and turmeric. And top it up with full fat milk, though I make it with water.

After a year or so of that my bad knee has shrunk by nearly two knee-brace sizes, though the rest of me is still slightly larger than I should be.

AsWithGlad · 22/02/2026 16:52

@AuntieMsDamsonCrumble wrote I'm not sure whether I ought to admit that I am meticulous about using the same style and colour of pegs for each item I hang on the line. No mix and match for me........

I used to vary my pegs depending on what I was hanging out, (eg soft pegs for shoulders where pegmarks would show, strong ones for the hidden waists of heavy items) but matching colour had never occurred to me. Pegs all used to be wooden, anyway. Then one day I pegged out some washing for a friend while she was busy with something else. When I looked later she’d redone it, with matching colours for each item.
I can’t not do that now, I even try to match the peg colour to the colour of the garment.

AsWithGlad · 22/02/2026 16:54

Hot chocolate made with mostly water, Deano? Not for me, but I imagine the original cocoa bean growers would think it’s a good thing.
