The Bluestocking Women’s Pub: definitely full of ludicrous halfwits who refuse to get a grip (with unionised gerbils)

Welcome to The Bluestocking: convivial by design, opinionated in the best way, generously stocked with excellent food and drink that complies with whatever it’s meant to comply with, and any calories, gluten or alcohol are entirely virtual.

Staffed by impeccably trained, unfailingly polite gerbils who run a tight bar with plenty of enthusiasm and good intentions. Quick with the drinks, but terrible spillers spellers and liable to turn an idle thought on existential existence into a full blown musical with Busby Berkeley routines. You have been warned.

All women welcome, just in case that isn't obvious. Men can go to The Staunch Ally round the corner.

<looks around>

It's empty. Excellent. No one will see me in this ridiculous dress. And whilst everyone else is following instructions to fill up the previous thread I shall take the opportunity to hide my Tunnock's.

No one will ever find them.

Excellent thread title, unfortunately it was expected. Using ludicrous has rather let you down but I wonder if that's tipping your hats to Bluestockings

highame · 26/01/2026 12:00

There's loads of room left on the last thread for more knitting tips and recipes. Why so early?

Is the notice suspended from the bannister, Boily?

Or is opening the door an intelligence test, with the correct method known only to a select few beetles?

Grammarnut · 26/01/2026 12:45

I hope the unionised gerbils are GC, unlike the twits at Unison et al.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 26/01/2026 13:35

Love the dress, @Boiledbeetle - very chic.

I went to knitting group this morning - the first time since early December! It was lovely catching up with people, although there are three of us who all suffered bereavements in the past few weeks.

Igmum · 26/01/2026 13:52

Sending sympathy for your losses SDT and ✊ to the gerbils. Now let me elbow my way to the bar before the people on the other thread spot that there isn’t a queue here. Anyone for a Tunnocks?

ChristmasStars · 26/01/2026 14:12

I'm just ludicrously excited to be here early for once. Love the thread title @MyrtleLion - suits us all!

AuntieMsDamsonCrumble · 26/01/2026 14:34

Just calling in to check that the move is underway - and I see it is.

@Grammarnut Please rest assured that the gerbils are very *GC - that is Gerbil Centric. Their union has made some interesting demands in recent months, including regular trips to Benidorm for the workers. They also seem to spend a lot of time in the casino these days. Thankfully, all money in the Bluestocking is imaginary, so they don't cost the members anything.

*Oh, and they are also staunch feminists.

MyrtleLion · 26/01/2026 14:57

Last thread all locked up.

Booties have been sewn. One more to make then I'll show you all their utter cuteness.

Dentist was fine but expensive as usual.

I looked at the drawing, very clear and informative and I didn't think anything on there looked at all like norks. Not al all. That would be so immature...😂

Yes, how clever of that reporter. She sounded as if she is from the US, and possibly has overestimated the Maths understanding of her audience, though. Including me.

I have managed to teach turning points to adolescents for decades and I have never known any mention of norks. Not in my hearing, anyway.

Britinme · 26/01/2026 15:02

My autistic DS1 neglects his teeth badly and can’t find an NHS dentist in his area (he says), so when he comes over here I make him an appointment with mine. Costs me a fortune because he always needs something, even if it’s just an extra-deep cleaning as my dentist tells me he definitely doesn’t brush and floss the way he should. He had to have four teeth extracted a year ago because they were past saving.

I’m glad you have a knitting group to go to, @SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius , although sorry to read of the bereavements to add to your own.

Oh dear, that puts me below the level of maturity of adolescents😱
I blame the Bluestocking. It introduced me to the words 'nork' and 'norkage' and they are so amusing I've been led astray into using them inappropriately😄

Perfect timing as ever. It takes time to prep and make sure nobody misses the ride as I tend to.

MarieDeGournay · 26/01/2026 16:24

Woley, I'm glad you got back to your knitting group, but sorry to hear that there was sad news to be shared.

Remember that lovely image of Marie de Gournay [the Original Girl, that isSmile] you posted on the old thread - would it be OK if I tried to get that printed on a t-shirt?
If it works out, I'll post a photo.

Hello Fuzz, bumbling in? - are you identifying as a bee today?
Hope you didn't overdo the jelly and ice cream and ginger beer at your birthday party😄

ErrolTheDragon · 26/01/2026 16:28

If ‘puffin’ wasn't already the perfect name for puffins, then ‘bumblebirds’ would suit them. Not, of course, to be confused with another of my favourite avians, bumbarrels.

Weirdly, the Linnean name Puffinus puffinus isn't the puffin it's the Manx Shearwater. Puffins are Fratercula arctica.

Doesn't 'fratercula' mean 'little brother'?

I presume in the sense of a religious order, on account if their black and white plumage.

Yes, that is odd … I did once look into how that came about but I’ve forgotten if I found an explanation other than that puffins are so puffiny.
