Welcome one and all. Quick précis - women's pub, rodent staff, apparently we're sane.

Fruitcake with cheese is a Yorkshire tradition, but it’s not one I understand really.

Has to be Wensleydale thoughbut.

In further snow news we eventually cracked and shovelled it - that is I shovelled about a quarter of it and DH did the rest. He is about to come in and we will have a cup of hot chocolate (not vile Hershey's but nice Ghirardelli) to celebrate. Freezing rain has not yet showed up.

Swashbuckled · 07/01/2026 20:32

I only wear one type of pyjama. Those men’s style ones, like a buttoned jacket with matching trousers. Silky material. White piping. Plain colour. It must be how I roll.

Boiledbeetle · 07/01/2026 20:13

Exactly the problem I have.

Ah, now I understand!

I don't have the dreadnorks problem - mine are fairly ordinary battleship norks - but I wear nighties because I hate fabric tangling around my legs in bed. In summer I follow Marilyn Monroe's example and wear nothing but a dab of Chanel No 5*

*whatever deodorant I happen to be using at the time

I’m trying to feel cosy in the lounge. Have put the fire on and have poured a glass of that damson gin. Managed a beach walk at lunchtime (was working today) but it was hit and miss walking to it. The tide was out so, once there, it was like walking in normal times. Lethal out there now; ice on top of the snow. Could do with more supplies but am not going to risk it.

I’m not keen on cheese with digestives. Prefer something snappier. The cheese on ginger biscuits sounds good, oddly. Have had thick Greek yoghurt piled on ginger biscuits and that was very nice.

One of my distant cousins came to visit when the DC were small (I have 100s of distant cousins, my father's family is vast. Now and then one lands on us from Forrin Climes).

She introduced the DC to little tarts made of a soggy ginger nut pressed into a patty tin, filled with tinned caramel and topped with cream.

She was Favourite Relative for quite some time.

I hope Gingernut isn't traumatised, but that does sound rather nice!

Not a problem I have.
I have small norks. Not fried eggs, somewhat bigger, but not serious norkage by any means.
I am due a mammogram shortly. Can't wait for the usual comments about how today is a day of 'ladies with SMALL boobs, but yesterday it was ladies with LARGE boobs. Can you hitch it further forward onto the plate, dear?'
Invariably uttered by be-norked nurses.

Cheshire or Wensleydale with a slice of fruitcake. I keep meaning to try cheese melted on a slice. I suspect it'd be nice with Soreen.

Can I put in a vote for Cheddar? Especially sliced and put on the fruitcake slice.

Im currently wondering if I'm brave enough to have a slice of marmite Cheddar on the un-iced Christmas cake my sister brought me. I fear the alcohol and the marmite may not mix well.

Layered ginger nut “cake”.

lightly whip some cream.

tins of mandarins

gingernuts

dip the ginger nuts in the juice from the mandarins. Layer one layer in a dish. Top with mandarins. Then cream.

then another layer of ginger nuts as before, mandarins, cream.

finish with a layer of cream.

put in fridge for at least an hour.

Tazzy! Inky! Welcome back! And the Meursault fancier - it's welcome back to you too isn't it?

You're right, Magpie, it looks like Boily's champagne is bringing all the girls to the yard😄

It's all about what to eat cheese on and what to wear in bed at the moment, isn't it? We are a funny lot, aren't we?Smile💙

I’ve got fluffy flanelette (htf do you spell that) pjs on with fluffy bed socks.

You and me both, Brit. I wish I could wear pyjamas in this cold weather. They would make the middle-of-the-night trips to the loo less chilly, but I just can't.

It is rarely hot enough in England to risk sleeping starkers. It's no fun waking at 3a.m. with a cold arse.

I would love to find a pair of PJ bottoms long enough for my long legs, but with an elasticated cuff around the ankle so that they don't ride up. I've got very adept at pulling PJ legs down using my toes.

Yes and Caerphilly probably goes quite well on a slice of bara brith.

A friend of mine makes mince pies with a teaspoon of cream cheese under the pastry lid. I was very dubious until I tried one. Mmm...

Tonight I'm pairing a plain navy tshirt with a nice pair of checked pj bottoms from M and S that I unearthed today. Paired with legwarmers warm socks and Highland cow slippers.

I look amazing! It really goes well with the thick layer of excema cream!

This also works well with chocolate chip cookies and mandarin oranges. I remember making desserts like this in the 70s - if you slice your cream-and-biscuit log diagonally it looks fancy, as if you've manufactured a cake with vertical layers.

If I remember I'm going to try this next Christmas.
