Welcome one and all. Quick précis - women's pub, rodent staff, apparently we're sane.

Peeks round door.

‘ello all.

Hello again! You popped into my kind the other day and I wondered if you’d pop in. And Lo!

Swashbuckled · 07/01/2026 19:19

Mind, not kind .

I'm with Swash re. digestive biscuits, can't stand them with cheese. Oatcakes have a similar sweet note, although it's been an age since I've had one so I might be misremembering, that I don't like with cheese. I do like cheddar on ginger biscuits though.

If nobody else likes water biscuits I don't mind finishing them off. Hopefully we'll get a fresh delivery tomorrow.

I like water biscuits.

I didn't have any crackers this Christmas.

'Ello Taz. Clearly Boily's champagne is the real draw here!

Fruitcake with cheese is a Yorkshire tradition, but it’s not one I understand really.

I'm not a fan of Christmas cake, but with a lump of Wensleydale it is fine. If you've not tried it, please do. I converted a whole office full of Londoners to cake and cheese.

Swashbuckled · 07/01/2026 19:23

My Yorkshire neighbour also had a slice of cheese with apple pie. I’d never heard of that.

We can eek them out between us. Do you want some Boursain cream cheese with garlic and herbs?

CheesemongersApprentice · 07/01/2026 19:25

I have ordered some Lincolnshire Poacher Smoked online. I drive an old Land Rover which wouldn't warm up in a month of Sundays in this weather so fancy warming facilities would be a waste of time but it will get me through any amount of snow and ice.

Please may I have a generous slice of Sage Derby (the marbled one if available) and some black olives? Whatever crackers are immediately to hand and some salty butter? Oh, and a bottle of Mersault to wash it all down?

Magpiecomplex · 07/01/2026 19:26

Boiledbeetle · 07/01/2026 19:13

Inky!!

Could you possibly get rid of some of the Moose gel or are they all completely full bottles.

That's 100 on top of the 1000 items last year! 30 pairs of pj bottoms went today.

ETA my hugging a Moose image hasnt appeared. Sad face

Edited

I have to ask, Boily. What on earth were you doing with 30 pairs of pyjama bottoms?

I'm sure I've seen apple pie recipes that actually have grated cheese in the filling.

Welcome! Can I call you Cheesy?
Also, you're very welcome to the Sage Derby. It's pretty much the only cheese I really can't stand.

ETA I don't think you're entirely a newbie though. The fondness for Mersault is ringing a bell!

I’d been wondering what the local views were on fruitcake with cheese.

Only at Christmas. And, possibly, the day after Epiphany.

SionnachRuadh · 07/01/2026 19:32

Veda and cheese is the thing for me. In England there's Soreen but it's not the same.

I can probably get some Veda, but sourcing the right cheese to go with it... my favourite is Cheshire, but my word that can be a bugger to track down.

Sigh. I bought some baking apples today but I can't make a pie with them because, my earlier comments notwithstanding, I started a low carb diet this week. I find it's the easiest way to shift any excess Christmas pounds. But that means no biscuits or cake (even with cheese) and definitely no pastry (sigh again).

I'll just have to live vicariously through the Bluestocking for the time being.

SionnachRuadh · 07/01/2026 19:56

Not many people remember this, but there's a fillum from the 1970s called Freebie and the Bean. It's an early example of the buddy cop movie. I think it might have been the original buddy cop movie. I imagine somebody at the studio saying "let's do Dirty Harry crossed with The Odd Couple", and that's how it got made.

It's Lethal Weapon 10 years before Lethal Weapon, and though it's very un-PC (which is probably why it doesn't get show on TV these days) I will say that it's tremendous fun, it's got some amazing stunt action, and James Caan and Alan Arkin are a great comic duo in the lead roles.

But that doesn't matter. What does matter is that, weirdly, it had a funky love song as its theme, which went

You and me, babe
We go together
Just like peaches and cream

I enjoyed rediscovering it, but for me - and this is my provincial background talking - the two things that go together are Veda and cheese.

Boiledbeetle · 07/01/2026 20:00

I'm loving the adaptations the gerbils have made to the spray tan booth. And aresol excema cream... I reckon Android had a hand in that!

I have to ask, Boily. What on earth were you doing with 30 pairs of pyjama bottoms?

I am a sucker for Sainsbury's reduced Tu men's pjs.

I'm still left with about 50 (and then some) pairs. And I'm not a fan of matching tops.

This is why I'm on my second year of clear out

Too be fair I do live in pyjamas. Although I've only ever gone to Burger King in them once.

Sounds logical. Thanks to the dreadnorks I can't buy pyjamas in sets - if the top fits then the bottoms fall down, and if the bottoms fit then the top won't do up! I wear nighties instead.

Exactly the problem I have.
