Robin Ince quits working for the BBC over his support for men in dresses and terrorists

Shame really he’s a nice guy, a huge bibliophile, met him a few times at book signings, the last live show of his I saw he did shoehorn in “and of course trans women are real women” or some such nonsense.

guessing the infinite monkey cage is cancelled now, that was in my top five podcasts.

can’t do a popular science show and think women can have a penis though. Wonder what Brian thinks?

the video of his love resignation , presumably at the end of a monkey cage recording, is here
https://www.reddit.com/r/transgenderUK/comments/1plg02g/bbc_presenter_robert_ince_claims_he_has_been/

notably he doesn’t say how men in dresses are being treated badly. Everyone has a blind spot.

I just think he is another one (many comedians seem to be in this group) who like to think of themselves as "people of science and reason" but are in fact lacking any real depth of understanding and then get captured by any passing fad, like gender ideology.

Or simple cowards like Dara O'Brien. Taking the piss out of genderwoo extremists ought to have been slap-bang in his wheelhouse. He had no compunction about slamming the "natural childbirth" ghouls of the NCT after all, or even the BBC's maimed notions of "balance".

Perhaps the show would benefit from a woman of science as the presenter?
Suggestions?

Dr Emma Hilton all day long.

I've never listened to the show but I've long been mildly fascinated by the Cox/Ince duo given how much Gia and Ince seemed to dislike each other. I wouldn't fancy working so closely with someone who publicly resented my spouse.

I know personally quite a few blokes like Ince who will post online daily about how kind and tolerant they are, it really is so pathetic. Comes across as arse-covering to me - gives you room to be an arsehole in your personal life if you can get a lot of people online thinking you're amazing because you keep telling them you are.

He's saying he's forced to quit. But if that's true, then he has as much a discrimination case as Maya Forstater. I think the reality is as a PP said, that he has been reminded about the BBC impartiality rules. He has to stop posting about trans rights or quit. And he decided to stay in his high horse.

I used to know him quite well when I hung out with QI and other BBC people. He was always an arse and really despised and ignored women's opinions.

Is there any hope that Andrew Hunter Murray might one day turn his mind to doing some actual research on Gender Identitarianism rather than spinelessly bleating about vUnNEraBLe And oPPreSsEd? It's infuriating to see someone with more than adequate intelligence & a taste for diving into the weeds instead lazily nodding along with the tide of empty slogans.

Andy Zaltzman would be a great replacement

I was under the impression that AZ shared his sister's daft opinions on gender. Remember too that he was John Oliver's podcast partner for years before we were able to palm Oliver off on the US.

Diane Morgan should do the show with Brian Cox. Im being absolutely serious!

I suggested that on X and Ricky Gervais has liked my post. Great minds think alike.

JanesLittleGirl · 13/12/2025 22:19

Oh fuckity bye then. Mind that the door doesn't hit your arse on the way out.

I'm interested if it is impartiality rules. Does anyone really care about Robin Ince tweeting rubbish in his own time? It undermines the credibility of the Infinite Monkey Cage and makes him look like a dick, but I don't think any one is under the impression that he is representing the views of the BBC. (Unlike Lineker, I would guess that the vast majority of people in the UK have no idea who he is).

Have his tweets/bluesky made offensive comments about individuals?

In a couple of threads on reddit subs (politics and similar) it's been mentioned that Ince has posted what could be seen as support of Palestine Action.

Ever since PA were proscribed as a terrorist org, supporting them is illegal.

So if he's posting support of PA after they were proscribed, then it would be understandable why the BBC aren't happy and told him to stop.

These may be the type of posts that the BBC don't like:

Interestingly Gia has come off Twitter. And deleted the comments to Rutherford on his awful science paper

God these men are so pompous. It wasn't even a "paper", it was a letter to the editor 😆

The man is supposed to be a geneticist, you think he of all people would know the difference between a male and female human being, and how much of a physical advantage the males have over females. Another 'Middle Classhole' spreading more 'highbrow misinformation'. 🤬

I've just looked at his blooski and he appears to have wandered around Manchester on his own into the small hours after the recording finished. There's also a photo of him having a picnic on a gravestone. I don't think he's a well man.

Just having looked over the last 9 or 10 days of his BlueSky account makes me a little concerned. He is 'full of fury' frequently, he goes and sits with a book and coffee on a gravestone (maybe 2/3 times in the last 10 days) which is what I used to do. When I was 17 and a romantic poseur. Grin

He has banged on about various facets of his Omnicause A LOT. About 4 posts about the books he's just read/skimmed, all throwing him in what he clearly feels is a Good Light (I am a feminist! an anti-colonialist! I support Palestine! I read books about XR! etc). One of these books has the title 'No-one Wants To See Your D*ck: a handbook for survival in the digital world' - OH! the sweet irony! Grin Robin, this is what us twattish women say when someone who isn't female comes into our changing rooms, hospital wards or prison wings, mate.

There doesn't seem to be much time for him to enjoy being. Though all the out-of-focus grim seafront scenes, moody shots of the Moon, and graveyard musing are, I suppose, him living his best life. And genuinely, good luck to him. I similarly take photos of raindrops on roses and mist on the river and plague my FB with them. But find the peace in these things Robin and try to step away from the rage some of the time. Anger only gets us so far, and ultimately it wrecks us from inside.

Abhannmor · 14/12/2025 10:13

I'd come off Twitter if I was getting a pasting in the comments like Adam Rutherford is ! And if I hadn't already binned it.

I can't help but think there is at least an element of performance in all this. I can remember a time when my children were tying themselves in knots because everyone else was displaying their perfect lives on facebook, and it can lead to all sorts of things if one takes it all at face value and sees ones own imperfect life as a failure.
But we all have imperfect lives, it's normal to be unhappy sometimes, to be angry, to have shit to deal with. I am as distrustful of people who tip the other way and post their angst on graves as I am of people who post endless flawless loveliness. It seems sometimes to make people weirdly competitive in both directions, and the icing on the cake is that we are supposed to be interested. I really can't muster much of that, what I can muster is endless bafflement.

Its as if he's caught 'teenage' from somewhere.

CraftandGlamour · 14/12/2025 10:58

Interesting thread. I'm not an IMC listener but having some passing historical knowledge of Ince. He always struck me as one of the lesser funny comics from the hyper-nerdy end of the Fringe back in the day when the likes of Zaltzman & Oliver were sharing a bill.

He had a reputation on the circuit for being a very, very nice man but he also had the unfortunate luck of being friends with people much more talented/enigmatic than himself. To hear he has a reputation for being difficult is disappointing yet not surprising. I did wonder fleetingly if the niceness was curated even back then.

Rutherford is still there though I’m not sure using Twitter?

its Gia who has come off and deleted her comments about his “paper.” I took screen shots at the time as it was quite frankly, very funny.

“this is so cringe Adam” being the key one 😁

Another 'Humanist'. He says he's standing against censorship, but didn't seem to notice much, nor be concerned, when it was others who were being censored.

Interesting, though, that this suggests that the BBC may finally be loosening the screws and permitting actual free speech to all.

sandgreen · 14/12/2025 11:35

He comes across terribly in that statement, which poses far more questions than it answers. I was such a fan of Ince and for years was really resentful that this issue cost me a lot of the comedy I used to love, including The Bugle as OP has mentioned. Now these people just seem smug and depressing, and not at all as clever as they want people to think they are. Their comedy relies on preaching to the converted with big dollop of a superiority complex, and that is just a turn off now. I haven’t been able to stomach IMC for years because of Ince.

No mention of Brian Cox either seems telling. I’m sure he won’t be hitting back with similarly daft public display a la Rik from the Young Ones.

I don’t like Jimmy Carr’s act but find him a far more intelligent and considered comedy professional these days. Never thought this is where I’d be.

Leo Kearse in that post implies a BBC insider said it isn’t, it’s something different. Which would mean that he’s fibbing to play to the TRA gallery, if so.

It seems incredibly unlikely to be the trans issue, as the BBC is absolutely riddled with trans activists, and its news reporting has for several years been very obviously skewed towards pushing a trans activist perspective.
