Girlguiding - Supreme Court Decision email

Have just had an email from them...

As the parent of a young member in Girlguiding, following April’s Supreme Court decision relating to sex and gender, we wanted to give you an update. Many organisations across the country have been facing complex decisions about what it means for girls and women and for the wider communities affected, including us.

Girlguiding’s governing charity documents set out that the membership and people who benefit from our organisation are girls and women. In April, the Supreme Court ruled that girls and women are defined in the Equality Act 2010 by their biological sex at birth.

Following detailed considerations, expert legal advice and input from senior members, young members and our Council, Girlguiding’s Board of Trustees has made the difficult decision that Girlguiding must change Girlguiding must change, following the Supreme Court’s ruling.

From today, 2 December, it is with a heavy heart that we are announcing trans girls and young women will no longer be able to join Girlguiding. This is a decision we would have preferred not to make, and we know that this may be upsetting for members of our community.

There will be no immediate changes for current young members but more information will be shared next week.

Most adult roles, including unit helpers, district helpers and administrative support, are already open to all, so we are confident that no volunteers will have to leave the organisation.

Girlguiding believes strongly in our value of inclusion, and we will continue to support young people and adults in marginalised groups. Over the next few months, we'll explore opportunities to champion this value and actively support young people who need us.

You can find our full statement and updated policy on our website.

We are proud to be the UK’s largest youth organisation dedicated to girls and is focused on creating an equal world for girls and young women. For over 100 years, we have been a welcoming space for all girls to have new experiences, support their communities, build friendships and grow their confidence.

While Girlguiding may feel a little different going forward, these core aims and principles will always be the same. We remain committed to treating everyone with dignity and respect, particularly those from marginalised groups that have felt the biggest impact of this decision.

If you have any immediate questions, we have our special support team in place, to give volunteers, parents and carers the best support we can. We are asking Girlguiding HQ, trading and country/region staff to refer any volunteer or parent who has questions about this announcement.

Scouts accepts both sexes so trans girls and trans boys can still attend scouts. Girl guides accepts trans boys because they are biologically female. So loads of options really.

Looks like this is a win win.

WI will have to get off the fence next and either admit men as members or clarify biological women only.

VeggieParishLunch · 02/12/2025 22:48

Radio 4 news just now stated that "girls and young women who identify as trans cannot join the girl guides".

Surely this is the opposite of what has been announced today. So cross with all the obfuscating language. What do the BBC mean by "girls" and "young women"?

There’s already a change.org petition to get them to reverse it …

Funny to see some terfy comments in amongst the transactivist drivel.

'As a transmasculine system, this decision hurts so hard in an organisation that helped us become ourselves. Trans girls deserve better. Guiding has always been about uplifting women, even if it is looked down upon by hateful people in society, and trans people must not be excluded from that.'

Wow, that's a blast from the past! I didn't know that people identified as systems anymore (think multiple personality disorder).

ETA.
'I have a transwoman friend who can't join my guides and I thinks it's unfair because I see her as anything but a girl.'
LOL!

That is factually incorrect and irresponsible, but goes to show the damage caused to common understanding by the abuse of language.

if you can tell me how, (in trans ideology), 'a girl who is born with a penis' is non conforming, it would be very novel, indeed.

Edited to add that if you give that question even the most superficial of analysis, you might be on the first rung of the ladder of understanding of what we are talking about

Datun · 02/12/2025 23:03

On the plus side, any TRAs in the guides will lose interest quite swiftly and leave.

What's the point in being a TRA, when you've got no males to prioritise.

Edited

If you are no longer allowed to 'educate' young girls to accept males in their changing rooms, then what's the point.

This is going to make it a lot harder for my daughter to get her accidental patriarchy enabler badge. Come on Guiding, everyone knows womanhood is determined by sexist stereotypes like clothing choice, favourite colour and preferred toys and hobbies not trivial irrelevancies like having or not having a penis!

Brava to whoever left this message of support 👏🏽

Not sure why this clarification is buried near the end either. I think it would have been helpful at the very top.

"Biological girls who identify as boys are still able to join."

"Biological girls who identify as boys are still able to join."

These are the girls who need the most to have a female-only space, supported by other girls and doing all the cool and fun things without being told "you can't do that, that's only for boys" or having the boys elbow them aside and hog the equipment.

When I aged out of Guides, I didn't go to Rangers (Senior Section) because it was a combined unit with the local Venture Scouts and, having been sexually assaulted at eight, I feared rape. I am glad that GG are doing the right thing, and appalled that they ever did the wrong thing in the first place.

unwashedanddazed · 03/12/2025 00:17

I feel sad for any very young boys who have been lied to and affirmed as girls, who might now lose a good form of social activities. However they should be encouraged to join the scouts as an alternative, mixed sex, group.

I'm really pissed off that they are continuing to allow adult male volunteers. They should be nowhere near an all female environment. There's no need for them.

Tofufuton · 03/12/2025 00:21

It's like the Borg has taken over institutions for the last decade.

"Heavy heart". I mean, really! Get to absolute fuck, you bunch of pandering drama queens.

GallantKumquat · 03/12/2025 02:06

It's too bad they didn't take it as an opportunity to emphasise that trans identified females were welcome. That is what's truly being trans exclusionary.

sanluca · 03/12/2025 06:35

PennyLane498 · 02/12/2025 19:27

What a sad misguided individual you are. Your lack of empathy is astounding. Let’s hope no one in your family circle is ever non-conformative.

I don't understand what you are saying? If as a male child you are non conformative it must mean you have to change gender and are no longer a boy?
Or that girls are non conformative as they are female so anyone non conformative has to be a girl, as boys are the norm?

Your way of thinking is then extremely rigid and patriarchial.

SingleSexSpacesInSchools · 03/12/2025 06:45

MistyGreenAndBlue · 02/12/2025 22:37

But they CAN'T change it. They are following the law now. What a waste of time

and 3,000 whole signatures on it, thats not taking off.

Not that 3,000,000,000 signatures would.

mids2019 · 03/12/2025 06:55

Trans girls have scouts! Scouts for some time has been accepting girls and boys in an inclusive fashion so there is no exclusion here. Guides should be safe space for girls in a society there many single sex organisations are on the wane. Personally I feel my girls like the more active scout activities but certainly guides offers something important in terms of a girl only space.

Needingtoanewjob · 03/12/2025 07:15

People with kids in the trans Thrall will be upset. Their close friends will sympathise and everyone else breathes is sigh of relief.
The relief is silent as we do not want to upset people. Because we have always been kind.

Slowly things will drift back to normality but so slowly it'll feel almost invisible.

Do the scouts separate by sex when it comes to sleeping arrangements etc? Would a male child who thought they were trans be placed with girls?

SparklyGlitterballs · 03/12/2025 07:24

I saw this come up on my feed on FB on a GG page. I was amazed that a high number of the comments underneath were wailing about what an injustice this was, "Not my Girl Guiding", I'm going to leave, etc. Those that were brave enough to say it's the right decision to safeguard girls were jumped on and told trans girls are girls etc. Madness!

Scouts can have mixed sex sleeping if it is approved by parents. It is not the norm.

I have boys in scouts but haven't dug into their transgender policies as not relevant to their group. I think it is very much 'young person can use the facilities that match their gender' and other parents not told so very much a potential safeguarding issue.

Helleofabore · 03/12/2025 07:43

Well done that mother who gave GG notice that she was taking them to court! And thank you.
