Me too, I need to call my dad, but also need to read this.

Sorry dad.

What is it with people, eh? My sister phoned during one of the explosive moments! It's almost as if they don't know what drama is unfolding in a court in Belfast😏

SassyPearlEagle · 14/11/2025 15:22

I'm out of the loop on this one. Could someone kindly give a quick summary of this case? There's a conflict of interest now? Sounds dramatic!

MyrtleLion · 14/11/2025 15:22

Is it a reference to Sarah Palin?

There was Sarah Palin shade thrown earlier and Palin did famously say that 'you can put lipstick on a pig but it remains a pig'.

Not sure SD was that quick, more of a spur of the moment thing - although a very American saying.

I would complain if I was NC. That's conduct unbecoming. Beyond advocacy.

MyrtleLion · 14/11/2025 15:23

... emailed to my instructing solicitor.
NC for complete transparency it had been round the houses - Dr Elves and I saw it before my instructing solicitor did. It was given to you us 40 mins ago. It reads:

"NC [Naomi Cunningham] means TWAW means RCC has men women's spaces
D [Michele Devlin] yes
Prof Sarah [sic] Boyd to J "can we rise for a second I have a concern"
STAND
SIT 11.20
J list of issues, length of case... taxpayers money"

J and the point of this?
NC that some observers in this room, some of whom may be fair-minded and informed and we say that explains or could explain why you rose and the impression that was given - it is further detail in the story and a piece of information in the mind of the fair-minded observer
J - SD?
SD the fact that a panel member said I have a concern can we rise - you know what you discussed we are not entitled to know for now what you said so you can deal with it. but this journalist is an activist too. so not sure how fairminded that observer is. I say it doesn't take this application any further.

My mum called during me watching a football match last weekend. I said she could carry on if she was prepared to put up with random swearing or yelling at the telly.

She voted for a call back.

Chattanoogachoo · 14/11/2025 15:24

Fascinating although I'm a bit lost so I'm away to read up on this case.

Shoot me down if I speak out of turn, but, I don’t think NC proved her first point about DBs membership of the consortium, because she didn’t give dates. I also kind of think that if SM was entitled to her beliefs and shouldn’t lose her job, then same should apply to DB. But I have been accused of naïveté in the past…

IANAL but I think that NC made the point that if Boyd had alerted the ET to the role she held it would be reasonable if SM to make a submission asking for recusal from the off but she might not have done. Recusal is not the same as losing job and there is a process to present potential conflicts of interest which Boyd seems purposefully to have ignored.

Akela64 · 14/11/2025 15:29

Who is Deborah Boyd and what is Re3 Group Ltd?

I do think from observing a lot of meetings etc, that it is harder for people to see a potential conflict of interest when it concerns them rather than other people

Deborah Boyd's daughter has, I think, a partner who has posted at least one picture celebrating Pride.

Where are you digging now, you naughty Dinosaur?

MyrtleLion · 14/11/2025 15:30

That note sounds like contemporaneous notes from a journalist who heard what Prof Boyd said.

My speculation from the notes is that Boyd may have raised her conflict of interest at that point and asked if she needed to be recused. The panel rose to discuss it and may have said no on the grounds of cost of rehearing to the taxpayer.

That is not an excuse or reason not to recuse, though the case would probably have to be reheard entirely at that point.

If this.is true then the judge might be in really deep shit for not recusing Boyd.

SionnachRuadh · 14/11/2025 15:31

I don't know about rudeness, but I'm sure SD was scundered already.

Every lawyer in Belfast has that one client who rocks up and says "see me, see this case, it'll be wee buns" and then it turns out very much not to be.

I'd enjoy listening to the arguments that Pride is an open minded, unbiased event that is inclusive of gender identity, particularly the freedom of lesbians to be homosexual.

Okay I think I've got the right Northern Ireland Women's Manifesto on Northern Ireland for the General Election of 2019. It is supported on the cover by Transgender NI and the Women's Resource and Development Agency.

Part of the recusal case was that panel member Prof Boyd (PB) is a former director of Enterprising Women's Network (EWN) which is part of the Women's Regional Consortium (WRC). The WRC is part of the Women's Resource and Development Agency (WRDA) which is a sponsor of the...

My digging found this picture of Deborah Boyd in an Invest NI publication - perhaps one of the observers could say if it is her in the room? If so then her connections to the organisation mentioned by NC are correct as the report includes a disclosure of interest (so she does know about them....) Deborah Boyd was a Board member of
Enterprising Women Network (Armagh and
Portadown) to September 2005, which received
£8,000 (2005: nil) of financial assistance
payments from Invest NI.

If that's a very old photo, it's possible. I'm poor with faces, though, so not the best judge (and she's mostly looking down and hasn't smiled). No photos loading for me on the BelTel article, but 65 is approx the right age. Short dark hair with a purple rinse.
